From coach Judy Harms:
Whippets grab win despite giving up 24 points to Edgerton’s Bethany Oren. It was a sluggish start to the game, but the girls picked it up enough to earn the win. Whitewater was led by Allison Heckert and Kacie Carollo each with 16, while Ali Ketterhagen had 15. Ketterhagen contributed key rebounds down the stretch, 14 overall for the game. Jaden Henneman really came through with some tough defense in the paint, which led to some key stops as well.
These talented young musicians were nominated by their director, Abi Kading, to perform with the group under this year’s guest conductor, the internationally known composer, Brian Balmages.
Whitewater’s winning streak came to an end at 5 games while Beloit Turner ended their losing streak at 3 with a 60-47 win. Halftime had the game close with Whitewater trailing, 17-22. Beloit Turner got it going in the second half and led by as much as 17. Whitewater scratched their way back to within 7 points before the free throws from Beloit Turner closed out the game. The game was very physical with each team shooting 20+ free throws. Whitewater was led by Ben Kloskey with 13 points followed by Daniel Fuller with 9 and Bryce Parrish with 8. Beloit Turner was led by Dee Strong with 16 points.
Oregon won a back & forth battle tonight over the visiting Whippet girls’ basketball team, 54-55, in a non-conference contest. Oregon played with a strong fire coming out of the half after trailing by 8. Overall, I thought our girls did a great job playing together as a team despite Miranda Reynolds sidelined. First half we did a nice job at both ends of the court, especially in grabbing boards and holding their big, Ellen McCorkle to only one bucket. 2nd half McCorkle was more difficult to control, as we gave up 8 of her 10 points. Defensively we absolutely did not contain their 3’s, which was very frustrating and the big difference in the game.
Allison Heckert led the Whippets with 19 points and 9 Rebounds. Ali Ketterhagen scored 13 points while Abby Grosinske finished with 10.

From Coach Judy Harms:
“Whippets fall to McFarland in a tight contest 52-54 Friday night in their 2nd round match-up. At the half Whitewater was up by only 2 points 20-18, but it was quite a fiery after the break. Whippets fell behind by as much as 10 points, playing catch up the remaining time. The team was still down 10 with 2:30 left, when an impressive comeback took place. Whippets brought it within three, with a chance to tie from the line, unfortunately coming up short. Free throws was definitely a negative factor for the Whippets, going 16 for 29 on the night. Allison Heckert managed one last steal with 1.7 seconds left to present a missed buzzer beater. Allison Heckert led with 13 points, while Ali Ketterhagen had 10, including 12 boards.”
The Whippets will travel to Oregon on Monday night for a non-conference match-up.

Whitewater boys' basketball picked up another tough win at home. Jefferson forced Whitewater in to 9 first half turnovers and led at half time 24-19. Whitewater came out in the second half and mixed up their defense and held Jefferson to 20 points in the second half while pulling away for a 57-45 victory. Leading the way for Whitewater was Daniel Fuller with 17 points followed by Roberto Navejas with 13, Bryce Parrish with 12, Dylan Pease, off the bench with 7 points and several steals, rounded out by Ben Kloskey with 6 points. Whitewater did not go deep in their bench as Navejas played the entire game and James Dedrick had another stellar defensive outing. The boys travel to Beloit Turner on Tuesday for their next game. Jefferson was led by Monogue with 20 points off 4 three point makes and Peterson with 13 points off 4 three point makes as well. (Steve Shears)
Whitewater has won five games in a row and are at 7-6 overall and at 5-5 in the conference.
Coach Judy Harms: “After a sluggish first half, Whippets pull out a win over Beloit Turner 44-31. Whippets only connected for 9 first half points, missing a bundle of lay-ups, and playing a bit out of sync. It didn’t help that we haven’t had a game for 10 days, mixed in a week of exams, guess you could say it was a wakeup call before matching up against McFarland this Friday. Whippets went 1-9 from the charity stripe, but finished strong sinking 12 of 14 free throws the majority of the 2nd half. Three players ended in double figures, Abby Grosinske 13, Allison Heckert 10, and Miranda Reynolds 10.”
Whitewater score by halves: 9-35=44
Beloit Turner by halves:12-19 = 31
On January 6, the team traveled to Waukesha County Technical College in Pewaukee to participate in the FIRST Robotics Kick-Off Event. At the event, they learned about the game for the 2018 season, and they will have until February 20 to plan, design, build, and test their robot before it has to be sealed for competition.
The game this year is modeled after a 1980’s video game, with the robot needing to pick up and distribute “power cubes” to various places on the field. To view the video presentation of the game, visit .
Team Ferradermis would like to thank their community sponsors including HSI Rentals, Generac, First Citizens State Bank, LS Power, Whitewater Manufacturing, the Salverson Family, Basin Precision Machining, The Knights of Columbus, Hudapack, anonymous community members, Whitewater High School, and the Kiwanis Breakfast Club. Ferradermis has also received generous grants from the Wisconsin Robotics League Participation grant program, the Argosy Family Foundation, and from Pentair this year. With these donations and grants, the team will be able to compete in two regionals this year as well as a pre-regional at Sussex Hamilton High School on February 18. From March 22 – March 24 the team will be in Milwaukee for the Wisconsin Regional, and from April 4 – April 7 the team will be in LaCrosse for the Seven Rivers Regional. The regional events are free and open to the public.
If the team can raise a little more money, their goal is to build two identical robots so that after the first is sealed for competition they can continue testing and debugging the second in preparation for changes to be made once the first robot is unsealed in Milwaukee.
Team Ferradermis would also like to thank the large number of adults who are assisting faculty advisors Ms. Laura Masbruch and Mr. Cody Watson in mentoring the team. Three graduates who founded the team last year are returning to mentor their former classmates; Justin Brantmeier, Roberto Soto, and Jacob Lee are all attending college but giving up their holiday break and driving back on weekends to assist. Also mentoring the team are Rob Prager from US Tanker, Lead Coach Carissa Petzinger from Generac, Dilpreet Randhawa, Allison Conrad, and Caleb Johnson from the UW-Madison Robotics Team, UW-Whitewater student and FIRST alum Sam Smith, and community members Jim McKenzie, Tony Tautges, Steven Sahyun, and Karen Korf. Thank you to the community for your tremendous support!
