Happy Labor Day from the Banner

Editor’s note: The following information is from Wikipedia.

Labor Day is a federal holiday in the United States celebrated on the first Monday in September in any given year (i.e. a single day from September 1 through September 7) to honor and recognize the American labor movement and the works and contributions of laborers to the development and achievements of the United States.[1][2][3] It is the Monday of the long weekend known as Labor Day Weekend.

Beginning in the late 19th century, as the trade union and labor movements grew, trade unionists proposed that a day be set aside to celebrate labor. “Labor Day” was promoted by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor, which organized the first parade in New York City. In 1887, Oregon was the first state of the United States to make it an official public holiday. By the time it became an official federal holiday in 1894, thirty states in the United States officially celebrated Labor Day.[4]

Canada’s Labour Day is also celebrated on the first Monday of September. More than 80 countries celebrate International Workers’ Day on May 1, the ancient European holiday of May Day. May Day was chosen by the Second International of socialist and communist parties to commemorate the Haymarket affair which occurred in Chicago on May 4, 1886.[5][6]

The No. 4 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater football team tallied 41 first-half points Saturday afternoon on its way to a 46-7 victory against Carthage in a non-conference contest at Perkins Stadium, the team’s first game in more than 21 months.

The Warhawks (1-0 overall) rolled up 478 yards of total offense and held the Firebirds to 111 yards, including 24 rushing yards on 36 attempts.

Running back Alex Peete totaled nine carries for 54 yards and four touchdowns, including a 35-yarder to start the scoring just over four minutes into the game. His four scores tied a program record, which he also tied in 2018 at Dubuque.

Quarterback Max Meylor finished 12-of-16 through the air with two touchdowns, including a 47-yarder to wide receiver Tyler Holte midway through the first quarter and an 45-yarder to tight end Michael Berentes with just over a minute left in the second.

Linebacker Hawk Heffner paced a balanced defensive effort with six tackles. Defensive lineman Mackenzie Balanganayi registered four stops, including one sack and 1.5 tackles for loss. Linebacker Shane McGrail also recorded four tackles and one sack, which was a safety early in the third quarter to put UW-W ahead 43-0.

Peete scored on three 1-yard runs at the 11:12, 8:35 and 2:08 marks of the second quarter on his way to tying his school record.

Kicker Matt Maldonado knocked a 30-yard field goal through the uprights with 42 seconds to play in the third quarter following a 29-yard punt return by Dain Hudson.

The Warhawks’ defense held Carthage (0-1) without a score until the final two minutes of the contest.

Holte finished with three receptions for 94 yards and his touchdown, and wide receiver Derek Kumerow caught four passes for 83 yards, including a highlight-reel catch in good coverage down the left sideline early in the second half.

Running backs Ryan Ponick, Jaylon Edmonson and Preston Strasburg each ran for 25 yards or more.

UW-Whitewater visits No. 8 Salisbury (Md.) for a top-10 showdown next Saturday, Sept. 11, at 11 a.m. Central Time.

Lincoln Elementary’s Seventh Season of the Growing & Learning Garden

Maya (Back) and Zeb Davis getting ready to water the garden

Editor’s note: The following information was provided by the Whitewater Unified School District.

This is the seventh season of the Lincoln Elementary Growing and Learning School Garden. First seeds were planted in late April by all of the students. Each summer families sign up for a week to care for and water the garden. The garden is a delightful way for families and children to nurture and grow flowers, herbs, and vegetables. The garden is also an awesome way to learn about stewardship, responsibility, and provides a great way for children to connect to their food source. Hands-on, sensory-enriched learning takes place here every day, while building lifelong healthy habits.

Recently the Davis family signed up to water the garden for a week in August and had a great time. Lucy Davis (13) reports that her favorite thing about the garden is the raspberries and Maya (11) says that her favorite thing about the garden is “watering it because you can see all the different food and flowers.” Zeb (8) enjoys playing around the garden!

Whippet CC Team Takes in First Invite of Season

With another week of training under their belt and not feeling like they were racing on the surface of the sun, the Whippet Cross Country Team was able to come away with several positive takeaways from their first Invite of the year in West Allis on Friday, September 3. All runners ran better than they did a week ago, with a significant portion cutting more than five minutes off their time — some as much as thirteen minutes!

Jack Hefty

In this meet, Gwen Truesdale led the Lady Whippets in 59th, followed closely behind by Sophie Walton in 63rd. Chasing down her teammates was Caelyn Caputo in 66th; then three more Whippets finished in a row with Emma Weigel in 69th, Nola Coburn in 70th, and Isabella Aranda in 71st. Evie Troxel rounded out the top 7 Varsity runners in 76th. In the JV race, Jenny Villarreal returned to action to place 82nd. Lucy Troxel and Sami Van Daele competed together side by side to place 87th and 88th, respectively. The Girls’ Varsity placed 7th out of 8 complete teams, and the JV did not have a complete team to score.

On the boys’ side, freshman Jack Hefty made his mark in the high school scene by placing 9th overall in a time of 17:33 and earning a medal. Cooper Hammond was 37th overall, with teammates CJ Tomomitsu and Nate Holden 55th and 56th overall. Miles Nickelsburg placed 89th, and Ben McCulloch finished in 93rd. Andrew Rollette completed the Varsity field by placing 96th for Whitewater. In the JV race, Keith Cameron led the team with a 110th place finish. Josiah Holden finished in 125th, Onyx Thompson in 126th, Sterling Truesdale in 148th, Casey Schilling placed 159th, Xavier Zei 173rd, and Alex Clarksen finished in 179th. #FlashbackFriday from the Historical Society: “Big Brick”

Happy first week of school and #FlashbackFriday from the Whitewater Historical Society!

This week’s photo shows one of the city’s early high school buildings, affectionately dubbed “Big Brick.” The school first opened in the early 1880s, with the first graduation held in 1887. There was only one graduate, Nellie Wright. By the 1920s, however, the population had boomed and school officials elected to construct a new, larger high school building (known as City High), which was completed in 1927. It turned out to be good timing, as Big Brick burned down that same year.

Volleyball Defeats Johnson Creek in Five Sets

Thursday night, September 2, the Whippet Volleyball Team defeated Johnson Creek in a thrilling five set match. After dropping the first set 19-25, Whitewater found their rhythm and won the next two sets 25-21 and 25-23. In the 4th set, Kindyl Kilar led the Whippets with 17 kills, but the team couldn’t pull out the win, losing 23-25. Whitewater came out in the 5th set on fire, led by Avery Hintz’s 2 serving aces, and went on to win 15-6. Whitewater displayed their offensive firepower and relentless defense in this marathon of a match, setting themselves up to enter conference play next week with great confidence.

I am proud of the resilience and aggressive play of the whole team. Sophomore Aidyn Amundson was asked to step up as a middle and played her role beautifully. She put up a strong block and ran her routes confidently. The Whitewater JV and JV2 teams along with a great fan base, provided a lot of cheering which made the loud Johnson Creek Dome even louder! Thank you to all who attended the match!

Stat Leaders:
Aces: Avery Hintz-7
Kills: Kindyl Kilar-45
Blocks: Jenna Pope-3
Assists: Avery Hintz-24, Calli Grosinske-22
Digs: Caleigh Yang-38, Kindyl Kilar-28, and Cali Kopecky-23
