Obituary: JoAnne (Jenson) Coulthart, 81

JoAnne (Jenson) Coulthart passed away on May 7, 2022.  Jo was born in Janesville, August 31, 1940 to Mary (Young) Jenson.  Her early years were spent in Brodhead with her mother, grandfather Arthur Young and great-grandmother Emily (Bridle) Burns.  The family moved to Edgerton, Wisconsin where Jo graduated from the Edgerton High School in 1958.  Jo later attended UW-Whitewater where she met her future husband, Charles Coulthart, playing bridge at the Huddle – a popular hang out with the college kids.

They married on August 26, 1961 in Edgerton and began their married life in Whitewater, Wisconsin.  Jo continued her education and received both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Education and she taught many years in the Fort Atkinson School District.  Upon her retirement, Jo received many letters from former students and we have enjoyed reading these letters.  She also took great pride in mentoring college students as they completed their student teaching assignments under her supervision.

Community was extremely important to Jo and she gave many hours of service to the community throughout her time in Whitewater.  She was very active in the Whitewater Jaycettes, she earned the statewide C.A.R.O.L (Outstanding Young Woman) award in 1971, an election poll worker, Meals on Wheels, the Breakfast Kiwanis Club (including the yearly bridge marathon, high school scholarship, poinsettia sales, Easter lily sales, pancake breakfast and much more), the Whitewater Federation of Women’s Clubs (Alpha Club and Minnieska), PEO, and numerous church activities.

Through their 45 years of marriage, Jo and Chuck enjoyed entertaining, playing cards, golfing and traveling.  Together they attended Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, visited the Old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland, visited the Salzburg, Austria setting for Jo’s favorite movie ‘The Sound of Music’ and saw the Badgers play football in Hawaii.  After Chuck’s passing in 2006 Jo continued to travel the world with a fellow widower, Alice Scherer; they saw the Great Wall in China, the Red Square in Moscow, Machu Picchu in Peru, took a safari through South Africa and traveled through the Panama Canal.

Jo is survived by her two sons, Tim (Madonna), and Craig (Lori) and four granddaughters; Chelsea (Alex) Sturtevant, Haley (fiancé Vaughn Brockel), Jessica (fiancé Chris Miller) and Carly Coulthart.  She is also survived by her brother Bob Jenson.  She was preceded in death by her husband and parents Mary and Ralph Jenson.

A celebration of Jo’s life will be at Messiah Lutheran Church, 5202 Cottage Grove Road, Madison, with Pastor Jeff Vanden Heuvel presiding. Visitation will be from 9:30-11 on May 20, followed by a Memorial service at 11.  In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate honoring Jo through a donation to Oakwood Foundation, Agrace Hospice or your favorite cause.

Whitewater VFW Post 5470 Pursuing Project to Save Local Historic Building

Editor’s Note: The following was provided by Whitewater VFW Post 5470.

The Whitewater VFW post has long been without a permanent home. For many years, the local VFW partnered with American Legion Post 173, hosting meetings in the old Legion Hall on Wisconsin St. until it was sold to be converted into senior housing in 2019. Since then, the VFW Post has held meetings in local businesses, Post members’ homes, and most recently partnered with the Whitewater Lions Club to host meetings in their Whitewater Lake clubhouse.

“While we appreciate the partnerships and support of the Legion, Lions Club, and community over the years, Whitewater is in need of a dedicated space to serve Veterans’ needs” said Post Commander Jason Dean. “With the university here, Whitewater is a place where many Veterans come as they transition out of the military and back into civilian life. We need a space for the Veteran Community to call home.”

A prominent local building, on the corner of Janesville St. and Walworth Ave. has been left vacant, and in need of major renovations for the past several years. “This building would make an ideal Veterans Center for the City of Whitewater,” said post member Curtis Lemke. “It is a local landmark, and it would be a shame for it to continue to sit empty.” The Whitewater VFW post recently re-established a committee founded to fund local Veterans building projects.

The Post 5470 Buildings and Memorials Committee was originally established to finance the Memorial along the Main Street bridge in downtown Whitewater. They now seek to raise funds to purchase and renovate the Janesville St. building. “A Veterans Center would serve as the heart of the Whitewater Veteran community. More than a place to hold meetings, the building will be a hub for connecting resources and engaging with Veterans and the community,” stated Commander Dean.

The Janesville St. building was built in 1860, placing it among the oldest buildings in Whitewater. The committee’s goal is to raise $500,000 to purchase and renovate the building, preserve the historic exterior and incorporate modern amenities creating a versatile space for Veterans and the community.

If you wish to contribute to the building fund, checks may be mailed to VFW Post 5470, PO Box 426, Whitewater, WI 53190, or by contacting committee chairman Curtis Lemke at JVC@VFW5470.org. Donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law.

Veterans of Foreign Wars is a Congressionally chartered 501(c)19 non-profit organization, Whitewater post 5470 has been in existence since 1947.

Antetokounmpo had 40 points and 11 rebounds, Holiday finished with 24 points, eight rebounds and eight assists and Portis added 14 points and 15 rebounds for the defending NBA champion Bucks.

Ski Show Team Announces 2022 Ski Season

Editor’s Note: The following was provided by the Southern Wakes United Water Ski Show Team.

The 2022 ski season is fast approaching and the Southern Wakes United Water Ski Show Team (SWU) is ready to entertain YOU!

In case you missed us, last year was a great year for SWU. In addition to competing at the Wisconsin State Water Ski Show Regional Tournament, we performed five shows at the Lauderdale Landing, six at Scenic Ridge Campground on Whitewater Lake, two on Delavan Lake and two on Elkhorn Lake in Babe Mann Park.

The full 2022 show schedule can be found on our website, www.SouthernWakesUnited.com.

We are always looking for more talent to join the team.  You do NOT need to know how to ski or own your own equipment.  You don’t even have to ski to join our team as there are many things we need team members for. If you are interested in being a spotter in the boat, a boat driver, doing sound for the shows, designing or sewing costumes etc… WE WANT YOU!!!!!   If you are interested in joining SWU, contact us at membership@southernwakesunited.com. Members on our team range in age from 6-75, so grab the family and join us for some fun in the sun!  Our first on-the-water ski practice is May 19, 2022 at 5:30 p.m.-8:00 p.m. at Babe Mann Lake in Elkhorn.

About Us

In 2018 the Lauderdale Lakes Aqua Skiers and Whitewater Lakes Sports Club (Minneiska Water Ski Show Team) merged, forming the ONLY water ski show team in Walworth County!

Over forty years, the teams formed a unique rivalry which included competition, shared skiers and great friendships, but both remained too small to compete against the larger teams in the state. After a failed merger attempt in the 1990s, the teams remained separate and continued to struggle.

Once again in 2018, the two boards decided to explore the option, knowing that a merger would allow them to share resources and create the best learning environment. This time the merger was a success!

SWU is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose purpose is to give its members an opportunity to work together to build confidence, learn new skills and promote leadership development, water safety education and sportsmanship. We are financially supported by SWU Magazine advertising sales, donations, team fundraisers and private performances.

A Banner Service: Garage Sale Ads

As a result of a reader’s comment that it’s hard to find garage sales in Whitewater now that we no longer have a weekly shopper, the Banner staff agreed to begin a “consolidated” garage sale posting that will be published by Thursday morning for the upcoming weekend’s sales. This announcement will only be for garage sales (a sale of miscellaneous household goods, often held in the garage or front yard of someone’s house) in the city and school district boundaries. We will not be accepting, for example, ads for cars or other items that are not part of a scheduled garage sale. There will be a limit of three times per year for a particular property. Although we may eventually make a small charge for this service, initially it will be complimentary.

Those wishing to place a notice must send the information to whitewaterbanner@gmail.com by Wednesday at 6 p.m. You may include a brief description of the items that are for sale, the hours and days of the sale, and of course your address.
