The Whitewater Unified School District School Board sets limits on open-enrollment applicants for the 2018-19 school year.

There will be no limits on open enrollment for regular students. However, the board did limit the number of open enrollment on “cross-categorical” special education students: early childhood will be limited to seven students; 4K through fifth grade will be limited to 77 students; sixth- through eighth grade will be limited to 64 students, and ninth- through twelfth grade will be limited to 81 students.

Districtwide for open enrollment, speech and language services will be limited to 158; physical therapy will be limited to 18 students; and occupational therapy will be limited to 35 students.

Due to a lack of available staff — the district contracts for these services through CESA 2 — there will be no increase for deaf/hard of hearing or visually-impaired students.

Additionally, the board approved minor edits and changes to its open enrollment-policy document.

Lyle H. Bogard, age 63, of Whitewater, WI, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at his home in Whitewater.

He was born July 13, 1954, in Woodstock, IL, the son of the late Edward and Beatrice Bogard. He grew up on the family farm and developed a love for raising hogs and cattle…a love that lasted his entire life. Lyle worked on various farms throughout the area. Lyle was the owner and operator of Bogard’s Hereford Hogs and Beef. Lyle felt strongly about family gatherings and was instrumental in helping plan many family get-togethers. He loved to see the joy on the faces of those that attended the gatherings. He frequently cooked whole hogs as the main course, to the delight of all. Lyle was very active in the 4-H, and always encouraged children of family and friends to show animals at county fairs. He regularly attended many county fairs, providing direction and support to those showing their animals at the shows. Lyle also felt committed to community activities that could be enjoyed by families. He frequently umpired community-based softball games in several communities.

Lyle is survived by his three children: Timothy (Dana) Bogard of Italy, Edward Bogard of Lake Geneva, and Kimberly (Cody) Pillman of Linn; three grandchildren: Kelby Bogard of Italy, Ameila and Claire Pillman of Linn, and seven siblings: Edward Bogard of Burlington, Arlene Hoffman of Delavan, Karen Crotteau of Eau Claire, Wayne Bogard of Springfield, Jerry Bogard of Thorp, Robert Bogard of Montello, and Kathleen Wrzesinski of Walworth. Fort Community Credit Union Donates Funds to Friends of WAFC for Defibrillator

Fort Community Credit Union is donating funds to the Friends of Whitewater Aquatic and Fitness Center (WAFC) for the purchase of a defibrillator for the fitness area at the center.

“The Center has a defibrillator near the pool area, but not in the fitness room,” said Debbie Oas, City of Whitewater Aquatic & Fitness Center Programmer. “We are so grateful to the Fort Community Credit Union and the Friends of WAFC for making this life-saving device available to our fitness-center patrons. Their safety and well-being is our top priority.”

Fort Community Credit Union CEO, Susan Johnson, said, “An AED is an important life-saving tool.  When we read that the Whitewater Aquatic and Fitness Center was raising funds to purchase one for the Fitness Center, we knew that we needed to help.  The new defibrillator machine will assist the responder with critical life-saving measures.”

Friends of WAFC President, Ron Binning, said, “We are so pleased to be able to assist the Whitewater Aquatic and Fitness Center by facilitating this type of donation.  Thanks to the Fort Community Credit Union, the fitness center patrons will have access to an important, life-saving defibrillator.”

The Friends of WAFC is made up of members of the community who support the WAFC to maintain and improve the services provided with the goal of bettering the lifelong health and fitness of the citizens of the Whitewater area.  2016-17 was a transition year for the Aquatic Center, as Whitewater Parks and Recreation took over running the building.  Many wonderful additions happened this year, with new fitness equipment installed, painting, new carpeting, and audio-visual equipment.  The Friends of WAFC transitioned to help with the Family Partnership Fund, which makes the pool and fitness room available to everyone in the community, regardless of income.  Families that wish to use the center but cannot afford the fees may apply for financial assistance to join.  In addition, the Friends Group worked with the Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs to provide towels for members to use in the center.  Also, donations were made in memory of a Whitewater resident, making it possible for low-income people to access swim lessons at a reduced price.  The Friends group also assisted with a new sign that sits near the tennis court to help direct people to the center.

All membership fees and donations to the Friends of WAFC are processed through the Whitewater Community Foundation, a partner in managing the funds that the Friends raise and distribute to the Whitewater Aquatic Center. Friends of WAFC can be reached via email at friendsofwac@gmail.com.

Rosemary Elizabeth (Baker) Metzdorff – June 1, 1926 – January 19, 2018

Rosemary Elizabeth (Baker) Metzdorff passed away peacefully on January 19, 2018 after a short illness, just 8 hours after the birth of her first great-grandchild.  Unfortunately, the cruel disease of senile dementia, complications of which caused her death, prevented her from witnessing this wonderful occasion, and many others over the past few years.  Her family takes some solace in the symmetry of these two events.

Rosemary was born June 1, 1926 to Albert and Elizabeth (Berryman) Baker and grew up in Racine, Wisconsin.  Her father owned an office machine business in Racine which provided for the family through the Great Depression.  She was a graduate of Washington Park High School and attended class reunions well into her later life.

A proud member of the “Greatest Generation,” Rosemary did her part to win WWII.  While her brother Bob fought in Europe in the Infantry, and brother Deane became an Air Force bomber pilot, she worked at the Massey-Harris factory in Racine where M-5 tanks were manufactured.  Not quite “Rosie the Riveter,” her work was clerical in nature but no less important to the war effort.

Toward the end of the war she attended and graduated from the University of Wisconsin and was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority.  She remained a loyal UW supporter throughout her life, attending two Rose Bowls both of which the Badgers won.  She and husband Terry were football season ticket holders of many years and loved attending games with a group of friends.

After college she worked for the YWCA in Janesville, Wisconsin and it was here that she met her husband Terrance J. (“Terry”) Metzdorff.  Despite a subsequent transfer to Cleveland for Rosemary, the romance bloomed and they were married on August 15, 1953.  They settled down in the town of Whitewater, Wisconsin where Terry began his career in accounting and business, and the couple began their family, which grew to include three children, Mark, Marsha and Bill.  A pioneer in the concept of the working mother, Rosemary did bookkeeping for several firms in Whitewater as her children grew.

Rosemary and Terry loved living in a small town and were intimately ingrained in Whitewater life.  Rosemary was a lifelong member of the Congregational Church of Whitewater, while Terry and the children attended St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, but there was frequent crossing of these boundaries as life progressed.  Proximity of family made for rich holiday traditions with visits back and forth to brothers and sisters, and cousins growing up happily together.  Rosemary and Terry were charter and long-time members of Whitewater Country Club and were both frequent champions of the annual tournaments held.  They cultivated a large circle of friends, many of whom migrated annually at Spring Break to Gulf Shores, Alabama where everyone got a head start on the golf season and beach bonfires were a great occasion for sing-alongs of the old songs.  Rosemary made sure that the family took the classic American road trip vacations east and west to learn about our country’s history and great natural beauty, and to attend several World’s Fairs.  All three children were standouts at Whitewater High School and went on to great success in life thanks to the idyllic childhood provided by their parents.

Ever the restless, motivated woman of accomplishment, when the nest was emptied Rosemary went back to school at the local institution, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, to get her teaching certificate and begin a second act in life as a high school Spanish teacher at Whitewater High.  She taught for more than a decade before retiring with appreciative recognition and a nice pension.  A great feature of her tenure there was organizing an annual summer trip for students to see the sights of Spain and practice their Spanish in its natural environment.  Her interest in Spain and Spanish further prompted the organization of a family trip to Barcelona for the 1992 Summer Olympics.

Rosemary and Terry were stalwarts of the Walworth County Republican Party and the First Congressional District of Wisconsin.  Although a swing seat through the child-rearing years, to Rosemary’s great pride and ultimate reward for hard work over many years, when Paul Ryan was elected it became a reliable Republican seat.  Her service led to her appointment as an alternate Delegate to the Republican National Convention of 2000, and after her beloved George W. Bush was inaugurated and won the election, she attended the inauguration and one of the Inaugural Balls in Washington, DC.  Her sense of patriotism and outrage following the events of 9/11 prompted her to make a pilgrimage to Ground Zero for the 5th anniversary observances in 2006.

After Terry passed away in 1996, Rosemary remained firmly rooted to the family home in Whitewater but continued to enjoy the attentions of her family, golf at Whitewater Country Club and the joys of travel.  She remained remarkably and successfully independent in her home until September 2015 when a fall and subsequent treatment severely exacerbated what we now recognize was an underlying dementia.  She moved to Belmont Village Memory Care in Carol Stream, Illinois, just 5 minutes from Marsha, and was very well-cared-for by the kind staff there for the duration of her life.

She was preceded in death by her husband Terry; a brother Donald who died in infancy, and her brothers Robert (Frances) Baker of Racine, Wisconsin, and Deane (Marilyn) Baker of Ann Arbor, Michigan.  She is survived by her children Mark (Marie-Louise) Metzdorff of Tigard, Oregon, Marsha (Chad) Beste of Carol Stream, Illinois, and Bill (Susan) Metzdorff of Chicago, Illinois; grandchildren Alex Metzdorff, Tom (Alyssa) Beste, Sarah Beste, and Marissa Beste; newborn great-grandson Rowan Thomas Beste; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Arrangements are being made by Nitardy Funeral Home of Whitewater, Wisconsin.  Visitation will be on Monday January 29 at the First Congregational Church in Whitewater from 9 to 11 AM.  A funeral service will follow at 11 AM with interment to follow the service at Hillside Cemetery.  Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of America or the UW Foundation.

Whitewater Girls Basketball 54 Oregon 55

Allison Heckert led the team with 19 points.   File photo provided by Bob Mischka.

From Coach Judy Harms:

Oregon won a back & forth battle tonight over the visiting Whippet girls’ basketball team, 54-55, in a non-conference contest.  Oregon played with a strong fire coming out of the half after trailing by 8. Overall, I thought our girls did a great job playing together as a team despite Miranda Reynolds sidelined.  First half we did a nice job at both ends of the court, especially in grabbing boards and holding their big, Ellen McCorkle to only one bucket.  2nd half McCorkle was more difficult to control, as we gave up 8 of her 10 points.  Defensively we absolutely did not contain their 3’s, which was very frustrating and the big difference in the game.

Allison Heckert led the Whippets with 19 points and 9 Rebounds.  Ali Ketterhagen scored 13 points while Abby Grosinske finished with 10.

JV Game was won by Oregon.

Allen L.J. Quast, 81, died unexpectedly at home, sitting in his favorite recliner, on January 20, 2018.

Allen grew up in Greenwood, WI, where he graduated high school. He served in the U.S. Army from 1955-61 and enjoyed playing drums in the Army Band. Allen met the love of his life, Barbara, in Loyal, WI, and they married February 3, 1962. Allen worked 34 years at Hawthorn Mellody Dairy and ended his career as a lab technician at Crystal Farms in Lake Mills. Allen has always enjoyed camping with his TowLow, traveling to unique destinations, and playing cards with family and friends.

He will be missed by many loving friends and family members.

Allen is survived by his wife of almost 56 years, Barbara; son, Tom of Whitewater; son, Bob (Becky) of Blue Grass, Iowa; five grandchildren – Chris (Haley), Brian, Jase (Kellie), Lacey, and Savanna; five great-grandchildren – Lillie, Zoey, Owen, Emery, and Rowan (plus Jase & Kellie’s twins due any day); plus many nieces and nephews, including Linda & Tom Hett with whom Allen & Barbara enjoyed traveling the world! Allen was preceded in death by his parents, Hilda & Martin; Barbara’s parents, Julia & Emil; sister, Bev; and loving daughter, Lynnette (who has waited over 18 years to be reunited with the dad who loved her endlessly).

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 am on Saturday, January 27, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Whitewater. Visitation will be immediately beforehand from 9-11am. Burial with military honors at the Hillside Cemetery will occur after the funeral mass.

Allen’s family invites everyone to share stories and condolences at www.nitardyfuneralhome.com.
