Free VITA program returns to UW-Whitewater for spring tax season

Returning for the spring 2018 tax season, the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program at UW-Whitewater will provide free tax preparation and free electronic filing of 2017 federal and state income tax returns for low and moderate-income taxpayers.

The UW-Whitewater VITA program will be open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Wednesdays from 4 to 7 p.m. from February 3 through April 11. Please note that the tax clinic will be closed on March 24, March 28 and March 31. No appointments are needed.

VITA is located in room 1001 of Timothy J. Hyland Hall, and parking is available across the street in lot 7. On Wednesdays, taxpayers should stop at the visitor’s center on Starin Road, explain that they there for the VITA tax clinic, ask for a temporary parking permit and park in lot 7 in any non-metered spot. On Saturdays, simply drive in and park in lot 7. (If you are using Google Maps, use “826 Starin” for parking lot 7.)

Staffed by IRS-certified student preparers and supervised by accounting faculty, the program offers important hands-on experience for students while helping members of the community. UW-Whitewater hopes to increase the number of returns processed and filed in 2018.

Robert Meyers, accounting department lecturer and program contact, explained, “Based on additional training and streamlined processes, we will be able to help a lot more people this year.”
