(UW-W press release) — Miranda Reynolds, a native of Whitewater, WI, and graduate of Whitewater High School, will compete for the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women’s track and field team during the 2021 season, which begins this weekend.
Reynolds, a sophomore at UW-Whitewater, is majoring in mathematics.
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men’s and women’s track and field teams begin an unprecedented season this Saturday at Kachel Fieldhouse with a dual meet against UW-Platteville, the program’s first of four dual meets this season and six competition dates.
The Warhawks will host five meets during the indoor season over the next five weeks. All home duals will be streamed online using StretchCast, YouTube and Facebook Live. Links will be available each week on the men’s and women’s track and field schedule pages.
Attendance at meets will be limited to participating coaches, student-athletes and meet personnel. Spectators will not be permitted to enter the building.
Both teams last competed in March 2020 during the indoor season. The men placed fourth and the women finished fifth at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Championships before the remainder of the season was canceled two weeks later.
Mike Johnson is in his 12th season as the head coach of the men’s program and his 10th year at the helm of the women’s program. He has led the Warhawks to 13 top-10 national finishes on the men’s side and four on the women’s side.
On the women’s side, several conference placers return in a variety of event groups.
Sophomore Sarah Niehueser (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran Academy) was the team’s top WIAC finisher in the 400-meter dash and 800-meter run, reaching the podium in the 400 with an eighth-place showing. Senior Jessie Braun (Wales, Wis./Kettle Moraine) placed fifth in the 3,000-meter run.
Niehueser returns along with sophomore Paige Fassbender (Slinger, Wis./Slinger) on the team’s top 4×400-meter relay, which finished fifth at the WIAC Championship in 2020. Braun, Fassbender and junior Kylie Jacobs (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) are back from the team’s fourth-place distance medley relay squad.
Sophomore Miranda Reynolds (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) is coming off a fourth-place conference showing in the high jump. Senior Shelby Nickels (Manitowoc, Wis./Lincoln) is the defending league champion in the long jump and a 2020 All-American thanks to qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championship in the event.
Junior Abigail Missiaen (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) reached the podium for the first time in her career in the pentathlon at the 2020 WIAC Indoor Championship. It was her fourth appearance on the conference podium for her career.
Senior Sydney Davidson (Elburn, Ill./Kaneland) is a past placer in pole vault, finishing eighth at the 2019 WIAC Indoor Championship.
Junior Morgan Huntley (Hillsboro, Wis./Hillsboro) is the team’s returning thrower. She qualified for last year’s conference indoor meet in the weight throw.

On Tuesday, February 2nd, the Whitewater Whippet Gymnastics Team competed against Waterford in a dual at Whitewater High School. This was also Parents’ Night and Senior Night. The gymnasts had a successful meet making many individual improvements.
The highlights of the meet included our Senior Jenna Caldwell scoring an 8.15 on Vault, a 7.225 on Floor, and a 29.725 in the All-Around. Halee Peters scored an 8.15 on Vault and a 7.6 on Floor. Caleigh Yang scored a 7.55 on Beam and a 7.475 on Vault. Anna Ejnik scored a 7.05 on Beam and an 8.05 on Vault. Brenda Aguilar scored a 7.2 on Vault and a 6.95 on Floor.
Lastly, on the Junior Varsity side Lauren Buehler scored a season high on the Vault scoring a 7.45. She also scored a 6.6 on Beam. Isabelle Dieter also scored a season high on Vault scoring a 7.35. Brooke Bazeley scored a 5.1 on Floor, and Alexis Kuhnke scored a 6.3 on Vault.

Whitewater High School Head Swim Coach

Devin Bazeley is headed to STATE! Congratulations to Devin on qualifying in his two individual events for the 2021 State swim meet. Devin will swim on Friday, February 5th, at the Waukesha South High School Natatorium with the competition beginning at 6:30 p.m. Devin will swim the 200 Yard Freestyle and the 100 Yard Butterfly. Devin was able to win the 100 Butterfly with a lifetime best time and was 2nd in the 200 Freestyle which was also a lifetime best time; both times are new Top 10 Times for Whitewater High School. Devin also led off the 400 Freestyle Relay with a new 100 Freestyle Top 10 Time.
All of our Whippets worked hard for this final swim meet with many achieving additional best times. Wyatt Anderson dropped three seconds in his 200 Individual Medley and also swam a best time in the 100 Breaststroke, too. Wyatt placed 11th in the 200 Individual Medley and 14th in the 100 Breaststroke; both races earned points toward our final score.
Tyler Arnett continued to shine, swimming right on his already fast season best times. Tyler placed 11th in the 200 Freestyle and 6th in the 500 Freestyle. Tyler was also a part of our 200 Medley and 400 Freestyle relay teams; the Medley Relay earned 6th place, and our 400 Freestyle Relay placed 7th.
Zach Tomomitsu, Carter Schepp, and Jake Kuhlow all swam right on their season best times and gained more experience swimming in the end of season Championship Meets. Carter continuously dropped time all season and earned his way onto the 200 Medley and 400 Freestyle Relays. Jake also had significant time drops all year and earned his spot on both the 200 and 400 Freestyle Relays. It’s been great having these hard working athletes on the team!
Cole Schlicher had a good meet with a new best time in the 50 Freestyle. Cole swam a tough 100 Breaststroke with his goggles around his nose and mouth after the start; Cole didn’t let it stop him as he went right on his season best time and placed 15th overall, scoring points for the team. Cole was new to the team this year and will be a big contributor to the team next year.
Keith Cameron swam a strong Sectional Meet with best times in both the 50 Freestyle and 100 Breaststroke. Keith was able to place 13th in the 100 Breaststroke, scoring points for the team. Keith also swam on both the 200 Medley and 200 Freestyle Relays.
I am very proud of how hard all of our athletes worked this year and can’t wait to see what another year of experience will do for them. Good luck to Devin at the WIAA State Swim meet this Friday!

Saturday, January 30, the Whippet Wrestlers traveled to Evansville to participate in a very competitive Regional Tournament and wrestled quite well. It was very exciting to wrestle on a Saturday again as we have not had that opportunity this season. When the dust settled, the team found themselves in 2nd place behind host Evansville and had 5 individuals qualify for the sectional tournament.
David Cushman led the way, winning a championship at 152 pounds. David wrestled very well-controlled matches all day, staying in good position throughout.
Coming in second place were Brian Porcaro, Marcus DePorter, Carter Friend, and Mason DePorter. All three of these young men found themselves in the finals but came up just short. Fortunately, they were able to hold onto their position for the right to compete another week.
Just missing out on qualifying were CJ Tomomitsu and Aaron Porras. Both of these young men took 3rd place with tough losses in their true second place match.
The coaches are very proud of the team during a season in which there were many question marks for them along the way. They should be proud of how they competed today as everyone on the team represented Whitewater High School extremely well.
Our qualifiers will compete again next Saturday when they travel to Richland Center to compete for a trip to State. The sectional will also take the top two in each weight class to the next level of competition.

The Whitewater High School Gymnastics Team competed against Milton on Friday, January 29th, at Whitewater High School. The Whippets had a team score of 113.125. The WHS gymnasts had many highlights during this meet.
Starting on the Varsity side, Brenda Aguilar scored a 7.35 on Vault and a 6.725 on Floor. Caleigh Yang scored a 7.425 on Vault and a 7.65 on Beam. Anna Ejnik scored a 7.5 on Floor and a 7.65 on Vault. Halee Peters scored a 7.3 on Bars and an 8.15 on Vault. Janna Caldwell scored an 8.05 on Vault and a 7.4 on Bars.
On the JV side, Brooke Bazeley scored a 5.4 on Floor. On Vault, Isabelle Dieter scored a 7.0, Alexis Kuhnke scored a 5.8, and Lauren Buehler scored a 7.3.
The Whippets will be back in action on Tuesday, February 2nd, in a home dual against Waterford.
(UW-W press release, 01/29/2021)– Rebekah Schumacher, a native of Whitewater, WI, and graduate of Whitewater High School, will compete for the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women’s basketball team during the 2021 season, which begins next week.
Schumacher, a senior at UW-Whitewater, is majoring in elementary education.
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women’s basketball team, the defending Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champion, begins its eight-game regular season this Wednesday at UW-Stevens Point.
The Warhawks, who are set to embark on their shortest regular season slate in 50 years, claimed the regular season league title for the second time in three years in 2019-20. The team finished the campaign with a 23-4 record, including a 13-1 mark in regular season conference play, and reached the NCAA Tournament for the 12th time in the last 13 years.
Head coach Keri Carollo returns for her 19th season. Since taking the reins of the program prior to the 2002-03 season, Carollo has led the Warhawks to six WIAC regular season championships, two conference tournament titles and 12 trips to the NCAA Tournament, including Final Four appearances in 2008, 2013 and 2014.
Four seniors lead UW-Whitewater into this unconventional season.
Senior center Johanna Taylor (Wauwatosa, Wis./East) led the WIAC and ranked among the top 35 in the nation with 62 blocks in 2019-20, the fourth-most in one season in program history. She garnered first team all-conference and WIAC All-Defensive Team accolades, averaging 8.8 points and 6.9 rebounds per game while shooting a league-best 54.7 percent from the floor.
Guard Emily Schumacher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha South) returns to the floor after a season-ending injury limited her 2019-20 campaign to nine games. She was a first team All-WIAC selection in 2018-19, when she averaged 12.0 points per game and made 58 three-pointers, second-most in the league.
Guard Rebekah Schumacher (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) averaged 6.0 points and 3.4 rebounds in 27 games last season, including 17 as a starter. She ranked 11th in the WIAC with 15 blocked shots.
Guard Adriana Wood (Racine, Wis./Horlick) is also coming off an injury-shortened season, appearing in 13 games in 2019-20. She was named to the WIAC All-Sportsmanship Team.
Juniors Veronica Kieres (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection), Courtney Oomens (Lake Geneva, Wis./Badger) and Yssa Sto. Domingo (Streamwood, Ill./St. Edward) return after playing key roles in last year’s rotation.
Kieres, who started all 27 games, averaged 7.8 points and 4.7 rebounds per outing and tallied 36 steals. Sto. Domingo earned WIAC All-Defensive Team honors, leading the team with 43 steals and finishing with 3.9 points and 2.9 rebounds per game.
Oomens bolstered a deep frontcourt with 5.5 points and 3.6 rebounds per contest to go along with 15 blocks.
Sophomore forwards Aleah Grundahl (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) and Abby Belschner (Grafton, Wis./Cedarburg) enjoyed strong rookie campaigns in 2019-20.
Grundahl was named WIAC Newcomer of the Year and honorable mention All-WIAC, finishing the year with 10.1 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. She shot 48.8 percent from the floor and ranked second in the conference with 66 offensive rebounds (2.44 per game).
Belschner appeared in 26 games off the bench and shot 50.5 percent on her way to 4.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game with 26 blocks.
Guards Lunden Alexander (Dolton, Ill./Thornwood) and Kailey Ketz (Clayton, Wis./Clayton) and forwards Abi Baumgartner (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) and Erika Simmons (Blair, Wis./Melrose-Mindoro) round out the sophomore class. All four appeared in at least nine games a year ago.
Newcomers to the program include freshmen Erin Adams (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South), Lydia Coatney (Sabula, Iowa/Eastland), Avery King (Lincolnshire, Ill./Stevenson), Kendall Roquet (Middleton, Wis./Middleton), Maggie Trautsch (Sun Prairie, Wis./DeForest) and Savannah Youngstrom (South St. Paul, Minn./South St. Paul).
The Warhawks’ schedule includes games played on Wednesday and Friday nights in February against consecutive WIAC opponents – UW-Stevens Point (Feb. 3/5), UW-Oshkosh (Feb. 10/12), UW-Platteville (Feb. 17/19) and UW-Stout (Feb. 24/26). UW-W will play at home on the 5th, 10th, 19th and 26th, and will be on the road for games on the 3rd, 12th, 17th and 24th.
Fans will not be permitted to attend games in person due to campus event protocols. All home games will air live on UWW-TV, which is available on channel 100.1 on campus, channel 989 for Spectrum customers in the area and online. All road games will also be streamed online, and links to the broadcasts will be posted on the UW-Whitewater women’s basketball schedule page when available.
The WIAC Championship is slated for the week of March 1. All eight conference teams will qualify for the tournament, which will determine the league’s automatic qualifier for the NCAA Tournament.

On Saturday, January 23rd the Whitewater Whippet Gymnastics Team traveled to the Southwestern Invitational to compete in a six-team competition. The gymnasts had a successful meet scoring a team score of 114.95.
The highlights of the meet include JV team members Lauren Buehler scoring a 21.4 in the All-Around placing her 5th on the podium and a 7.2 on the Vault placing her 2nd on the podium. Brenda Aguilar scored a 7.6 on the Floor exercise placing her 2nd on the podium. Other highlights on the JV side were Brooke Bazeley scoring a 4.8 on Floor, Alexis Kuhnke scoring a 5.3 on Floor, and Isabelle Dieter scoring a 5.3 on Vault.
The Varsity team also had a successful competition. Jenna Caldwell placed 8th on Bars scoring a 7.55 and 9th on Vault scoring an 8.1. Halee Peters tied for 10th on Beam scoring a 7.725, placed 11th on bars scoring a 7.45, and tied for 12th on Vault scoring an 8.0. Caleigh Yang placed 11th on Beam with a score of 7.7. Anna Ejnik scored a 7. 575 on Beam and a 7.55 on Floor.
These Whitewater Whippet athletes will be back in action on Tuesday, January 26th, in an away triangular against BBG and WUW. Goooo, Whippets!!

The Whippets placed 5th in the Southern Lakes Conference Swim Meet with several best times and a few medal winning performances on Saturday, January 23. In individual races the team posted 10 out of 16 best times. All of our swimmers helped earn points towards our finish with only the Top 16 places scoring points.
Senior Devin Bazeley led the way with medal winning performances in his two individual events. Devin placed second in the 200 Freestyle, just .08 seconds behind first place with a best time and new time on the Top 10 All Time List. Devin also placed third in the 100 Butterfly, swimming right on his best time from Tuesday’s meet. Devin finished his last Conference Meet with a 51.69 in the 100 Freestyle split on the 400 Freestyle Relay.
Zach Tomomitsu raced 4 events at the Conference meet posting his best time in the 50 Freestyle while dropping 2.5 seconds!
Tyler Arnett was our other medal winner, placing 4th overall in the 500 Freestyle. Tyler was right on his season best time and will look to improve on that next week at Sectionals. Tyler also swam a great opening split on our 400 Freestyle relay, going 1:00.56.
Wyatt Anderson dropped almost three seconds in the 200 Individual Medley and two seconds in the 100 Breaststroke. Wyatt finished in the Top 16 in both of his races.
Cole Schlicher had one of the biggest time drops of the day in the 100 Breaststroke. Cole dropped an amazing 17 seconds!
Keith Cameron posted his best time in the 50 Freestyle by a full second.
Jake Kuhlow continues to drop time at every meet. Jake dropped another 5 seconds off his 100 Freestyle time after dropping 5 seconds at Tuesday’s dual meet. Jake also earned the team points with his 100 Backstroke swim. Jake was able to drop almost 5 seconds off this swim, too.
Carter Schepp continues to drop time. Carter’s 100 Freestyle was 3.5 seconds faster than his previous time, which was a best time from Tuesday’s meet. Carter also went out in his best 50 Freestyle time in the first 50 of his 100 Freestyle swim. Carter continues to race hard on our top relays too.
Next up is the Sectional meet at Nicolet High School on Saturday, January 30.
