Houwers becomes Whitewater’s first girls champion, Team finishes in 8th

WHS competed in 5 (of 12) events at the WIAA Div 2 Swimming Championships on Friday, Nov 9. Sixteen schools compete in each event and the top six schools in each event make it to the podium and receive medals. WHS reached the podium in 4 of the 5 events in which they competed — 2 individual races and 2 relays. Sophomore Ella Houwers swam in each of these four events. Ella finished third in the 200 Yard Individual Medley and was Champion in the 100 Yard Breaststroke.

From the Janesville Gazette:

A Whitewater High athlete reached the top of the podium Friday for the first time in the 49-year history of the WIAA girls swim meet.

The performance of sophomore Ella Houwers highlighted a hugely successful night for the Whippets during the WIAA Division 2 state meet at the UW-Madison Natatorium.

Houwers won a state title and set a school record in the 100-yard breaststroke, topping a 16-swimmer field in a time of 1 minute, 5.34 seconds to become the Whippets’ first girls champion.

From Coach Foucault:

Whippets posted a new School Record in the 200 Medley Relay and earned medals for their 6th place finish.  Congrats to Sophia Fanshaw, Ella Houwers, Brianna Zimdars, and Morgan Radaj! 1:51.94!  These ladies were seeded 11th going into the race and had a plan to win their heat and throw down the best time they could to try to medal.  It was great to see how confident the girls were that they could do this, they went out with incredible determination to make this happen and succeeded.  This is our first girls’ relay to ever medal at State.

Ella Houwers was able to go a lifetime best in the 200 Individual Medley finishing in 3rd place with a new School Record time of 2:09.12!  Way to go Ella!

Brianna Zimdars swam to an 8th place finish in the 500 Freestyle, going a lifetime best 5:19.07!  Brianna also posted her best 200 time during this swim, 2:03.97!  Brianna is now 6th all-time in the 200 and 4th all-time in the 500!  Awesome!

DREAM BIG!  We were a bit of a State Meet Cinderella story in the 200 Freestyle Relay with the girls going from the 16th seed to a 6th place medal-winning performance!  Way to go Morgan, Brianna, Amber Krebs, and Ella!  New School Record 1:41.13!  It was a great team effort from all of the girls.

Ella Houwers – STATE CHAMP, 100 Breaststroke – 1:05.34!  With not a lot of rest, Ella was able to focus and hold off a very strong field of competitors to earn the title.  Ella finished the night with 4 medals at State!  What a night!

The girls finished the evening in 8th place!

Thanks to everyone who supported us throughout the whole season!

Big Brothers Big Sisters merges efforts, announces new logo and branding

Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Central Wisconsin along with more than 270 Big Brothers Big Sisters affiliates across the country has changed its branding and has revealed a new logo.   At the same time, we are announcing the merger of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rock, Walworth and Jefferson Counties with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Dodge County and Watertown Area.  This merger creates one strong Big Brothers Big Sisters affiliate working to help youth reach their full potential.  Please make note of our new name of the combined agencies, Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Central Wisconsin, serving Dodge, Jefferson, Rock and Walworth Counties.

There is a need for volunteer mentors to be Big Brothers and Big Sisters in these four counties to help the youth waiting for a “Big” reach their full potential.  After much research, it was found that the previous brand was not conveying the mission of the organization nor was it connecting with potential mentors.

Big Brothers Big Sisters move to modernize the brand is to assure the mission stays strong and conveys the right message.  This new logo, with an uppercase and lowercase “B” blending together will help people realize that just like the matches made between our Bigs and Littles, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Youth today face many challenges, more than previous generations.  This move forward by BBBS of America is to assure that we are here to defend the potential of our youth and help them soar to greater heights.

It takes a mentor for every child.  Please join the movement to defend the potential of our youth today.  Be a Big.  For more information about our programs please contact our offices and apply to be a Big.

Whitewater Unified School District, Board Release Statement on November 6 Referendum Election Result

Casey Judd, President of the Whitewater Unified School District Board, and Dr. Mark Elworthy, WUSD District Administrator, released the following statement after voters approved the operational referendum November 6:

On behalf of the Whitewater Unified School District, we would like to thank our community members for their thoughtful consideration of the referendum question on the November 6 ballot. We are pleased that the solution the board presented to voters balanced the needs of the school district and our local taxpayers.

Throughout this process, we have worked to engage in a two-way conversation about WUSD’s needs and how we can best address those needs. This has also given us an opportunity to speak with many community members about how we can best position the district and its schools for the years to come.

With the passage of the referendum, WUSD will be able to maintain targeted class sizes, student support and mental health services, comprehensive instructional and co-curricular programs, and technology, safety, and facilities infrastructure.

We would like to thank everyone who took part in this process, including those who attended our community engagement events and provided us with their feedback and input over the past year and a half. We look forward to continued conversations about the future of Whitewater’s public schools.
