WHS Students performed in Waukesha at Singing in Wisconsin

Two students from Whitewater High School traveled to Carroll University in Waukesha on Saturday, November 10, to participate in Singing in Wisconsin. Singing in Wisconsin is a choral festival that takes place in four locations throughout the state. Students in each location learn their music and then present a concert in the afternoon. All of the students in each of the locations learn the same pieces and present their concert at the same time in each venue. The students from WHS sang in the Mixed High School Choir with Ms. Amelia Armstrong as the guest conductor. Students pictured left to right are Jacquelin Villarreal and Anisa Dauti.

Volunteer Builds Boot Brush Station at Bluff Creek State Natural Area

Virginia Coburn, The Coburn Company, Steven Witt, and Maggie Zoellner, Executive Director, Kettle Moraine Land Trust at the new wader wash/boot brush station.

There is a new feature at Bluff Creek State Natural Area – a wader wash/boot brush station created by Whitewater resident Steven Witt. Steven, who owns a welding business, volunteered his time to create the wash station with materials provided by The Coburn Company and Kettle Moraine Land Trust.

The brush station is at the west entrance to Bluff Creek on County Highway P south of Highway 12 near Whitewater. Anglers and hikers leaving the creek will be able to clean their waders and boots, which will help prevent the spread of invasive species such as the New Zealand Mudsnail.

Thanks go to Steve, The Coburn Company, and Kettle Moraine Land Trust for partnering on this worthy venture, and to the many Southern Kettle Moraine SNA volunteers who work to protect the habitat at Bluff Creek.

UW-Whitewater Edged in Season Opener

[text-blocks id=”1611″ slug=”bob-mischka”]

The No. 21 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women’s basketball team nearly completed a frantic comeback in the fourth quarter Monday night, but fell just short in a 77-73 setback against Loras (Iowa) in a non-conference contest at Kachel Gymnasium.

The Warhawks (0-1 overall) tallied 25 points in the final period and nearly tied the game in the waning seconds of the contest, but the Duhawks knocked down two free throws with one second on the clock to put the game out of reach.

Five players scored in double figures for UW-Whitewater, including freshman guard Veronica Kieres, who posted a team-best 15 points to go along with six steals. Senior forward Sarah Schumacher recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, and senior forward Olivia Freckmann collected 12 points, seven rebounds and two steals.

Whitewater Girl Scout Named to Youth Leadership Council

Fifteen girls from across south-central and southwest Wisconsin have been named to the 2018-19 Girl Scouts of Wisconsin – Badgerland Youth Leadership Council (YLC). One of these ambitious young women hails from Whitewater.

Among the girls invited to sit on the YLC is Whitewater Girl Scout Morgan Radaj. Morgan is a senior at Whitewater High School. An active Girl Scout, Morgan earned the prestigious Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout can earn. Additionally, she was a featured speaker before a group of state lawmakers at Girl Scouts Advocacy Day at the Wisconsin State Capitol held earlier this year.

The girls meet bi-monthly with Badgerland Girl Scouts CEO Marci Henderson and other professional staff to discuss topics impacting Girl Scouts today.

“The Youth Leadership Council is imperative to our organization,” Henderson said. “Not only do these girls provide perspective and feedback about our programming, but they help us understand what girls are facing every day in school, at home, and in the community.”

Henderson adds that by participating in boards and councils such as the YLC, these Scouts are embracing and expanding their understanding of being a G.I.R.L. (Go-Getter, Innovator, Risk-Taker and Leader) – all while directly impacting other, mostly younger, Girl Scouts across the Badgerland jurisdiction. She says their involvement also aligns perfectly with the G.I.R.L. Agenda, an initiative by Girl Scouts of the USA that inspires and prepares girls and those who care about them to take civic action. “The G.I.R.L. Agenda help girls discover how they can use their voices to create change for issues they care about,” Henderson said. “At Girl Scouts and as part of the Youth Leadership Council, these high-achieving girls have the opportunity to engage in real-world advocacy.”

Additional members of the council are Peyton Barber of Madison, Gabrielle Greenwald of Stoughton, Sydney Harbison of Beloit, Katie Hesselbein of Middleton, Autumn Hilt, Rebecca Hose of Beaver Dam, Lizzie King of Stoughton, Cecilia League of McFarland, Emily Ledin of Middleton, Lauretta Loesch of Sun Prairie, Alexandrea Olson of Beaver Dam and Akshita Pattnaik of Middleton. The 15 members were selected to the YLC through a competitive application process open to all Girl Scouts in grades 9 through 12.

Girl Scouts of Wisconsin – Badgerland Council covers 23 counties in south-central and southwest Wisconsin, as well as Houston County in Minnesota and Allamakee County in Iowa. Its service centers are in Madison, La Crosse, Janesville, and Platteville.
