Whitewater Girl’s basketball wins first conference game under new coach

The girl Whippets evened their record in the young season to 1-1 with a 52-39 win over Jefferson on Friday night, November 16. Cassidy Laue led the Whippet scoring with 16 followed by Kacie Carollo and Jaden Henneman with 15.

Their next game is at home against Turner with tip-off scheduled for Tuesday, November, 20 at 7:15 pm.

From new Head Coach Kristen Lippens:

I am very excited that we started our conference run with a win. Losing key seniors from last season meant that we needed players to step up and lead. I was happy to see that happen tonight with Jaden Henneman defending well under the basket, Kacie Carollo and Cassidy Laue scoring well in the first half and Abby Grosinske helping us with a scoring run in the second half.  We didn’t have to rely on one player to score, the scoring spread between Laue with 16, Carollo with 15, Grosinske with 15 and Hennaman with 6. With 6 minutes left in the game, our girls made smart decisions which allowed us to maintain the lead and force Jefferson to foul.

No. 21 Warhawk Women Best Luther

The No. 21 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women’s basketball team used a strong start and a great third quarter Friday night to defeat Luther (Iowa) 70-51 on the first day of the UW-Stevens Point Tipoff Tournament in Stevens Point.

The Warhawks (1-1 overall) held the Norse to 31.3 percent shooting for the game, including a 27 percent clip in the second half. UW-Whitewater outscored Luther 15-7 at the free-throw line and shot 46.3 percent from the field, including 52 percent in the second half.

Junior guard Camri Conley posted a game-high 15 points to go with four assists and four rebounds. Sophomore guard Emily Schumacher tallied 12 points and seven rebounds, and junior guard Becky Raeder and freshman guard Veronica Kieres collected 11 points apiece.

Sophomore guard Adriana Green finished with six points and a team-high 10 rebounds, and sophomore guard Sydney Smith added seven points.

2019 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards

Whitewater Middle School named 8th grader, Cali Kopecky, its top youth volunteer of the year. Cali received this honor for her service and commitment to helping others.

The honor was granted as part of the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a nationwide youth volunteer recognition program sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals.

By selecting Cali as its top youth volunteer, WMS has advanced her application for state-level judging in the 2019 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program. Prudential will announce Wisconsin’s top youth volunteers of the year in February.

No. 24 UWW Men’s Basketball Downs No. 25 St. John’s

The No. 24 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men’s basketball team used a 13-0 run late in the second half to pull away from 25th-ranked St. John’s (Minn.) in a back-and-forth non-conference affair Friday night, posting an 83-72 triumph at Kachel Gymnasium.

The Warhawks (2-0 overall) turned a 57-55 deficit with 7:24 remaining into a 68-57 advantage three minutes later as senior guards Andre Brown (Kenosha, Wis./Indian Trail) and Mitchell Pfeifer (Wales, Wis./Kettle Moraine) scored 11 of the 13 points during the spurt.

Wayne Rudolph Kreklow, age 74, of New Glarus passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at UW hospital with his family by his side.

He was born on August 19, 1944, grew up on a farm in Cold Spring then moved to Milton at the age of 16.  He started driving milk truck at the age of 18, met and married the farmer’s daughter, and love of his life, Nancy.  On September 11, 1965, they were united in marriage and celebrated 53 years together.  They moved to Whitewater after getting married and started their life as farmers.  In 1975, they moved the family to New Glarus where he continued driving truck and farming until Parkinson’s Disease forced him into retirement.

In retirement, Wayne found a new meaning and purpose through volunteering at the New Glarus Home, New Glarus Grade School, and delivering Meals On Wheels. He also started his much-loved collection of red tractors which he was very proud of and showed to anyone who visited.  Wayne loved watching old westerns, listening to his old cassette tapes of classic country, gospel, and polka, and never missing his Friday night fish fry. Wayne was a gentle caring man with a quiet presence.  He had a deep strong faith and love of God as a member of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church.  His love of family was evident throughout his life.  Wayne loved watching his kids and grandkids in sporting or school events, when the family gathered together, and when the grandkids would visit.

Though he struggled with Parkinson’s Disease since 2000, his vision was to raise money for a cure and raise awareness.  He spent 5 years spearheading “All Shook Up for Parkinson’s”, a fundraiser held in New Glarus with proceeds going to the Wisconsin Parkinson’s Association.  During this time, $55,000 was raised and donated through hard work and dedication to a cause that was dear to his heart.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rudolph and Lillian, brother Elson, and sister Rhonda.  He leaves behind a loving family including his wife Nancy, 4 children and 9 grandchildren: Lynnette (Bill) Gmur (Jakob and Josef), Whitewater, WI, Duane (Kelly) Kreklow (Tyler, Breanne, and Jaden) New Glarus, WI, Tracie (Mark) Bateman (Mason and Acacia) Holmen, WI, Michelle (Rob) Mohr (Tanner and Beckett), Green Bay, WI.  He also leaves behind two sisters La Dana (Bruce) Frank, Milton, WI and Claudette Kreklow, Milton, WI, several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, other family, and many lifelong friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 19, 2018, at Resurrection Lutheran Church, 1603 16th Ave., Monroe, WI with Pastor Nathan Strutz officiating.  Burial will be in the Swiss Church Cemetery, New Glarus.

Relatives and friends may call from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 18, 2018, at the Zentner-Beal Funeral Home, 29 6th Ave., New Glarus, WI.

The family would like to thank the staff of UW Palliative Care for their compassionate care of Wayne.  Also recognizing the special people in Wayne’s life who helped in times of need including Denise Swanson, Rudi Feller, John and Holly Eglsaer, Ron White, Gregg Smith, and Ron and Jane Pierce.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Wisconsin Parkinson’s Association.

Deer Hides Wanted by Whitewater Lions

Whitewater Lions will once again be collecting deer hides during the deer bow and gun hunting season.  Together we can make a difference in the life of a child.  Each donated hide will help raise funds to send a child to camp.  Extra cash is raised for the tails!

Hides and/or tails may be dropped off at the Whitewater Lions Clubhouse, located at N7462 Kettle Moraine Dr, Whitewater, WI 53190.  There will be a drop box on site so hides could be dropped at any time.  Please salt the hides when dropped off.  Salt will be available on site.  Hides could also be dropped off at the Steve Malone residence located at 6636 N. No. 24 UW-Whitewater Men Surge to Season-Opening Win

Five players scored in double figures on opening night for the No. 24 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men’s basketball team, which shot a blazing 58.6 percent from the floor in a 98-82 victory at Anderson (Ind.) in a non-conference affair on Tuesday night.

The Warhawks (1-0 overall) also hit 9-of-18 (50 percent) from 3-point range and hit 21-of-29 from the free-throw line. UW-Whitewater out-rebounded Anderson 40-25 in the contest, generating a 16-5 advantage in second-chance points to offset the Ravens’ 55 free-throw attempts.

UW-Whitewater returns to action this Friday at 7 p.m. as it hosts No. 25 St. John’s (Minn.) at Kachel Gymnasium.

UW-Whitewater official noted for advocacy for LGBTQ students

Dr. Brent Bilodeau

Dr. Brent Bilodeau, interim vice chancellor for student affairs, recently received the Dr. P.B. Poorman Award for work to improve the lives of LGBTQ students. LGBTQ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer or questioning.

“Dr. Bilodeau brings such an irrefutable amount of joy to this work of LGBTQ inclusion and access,” said Stephanie Selvick, the LGBTQ campus coordinator who nominated Bilodeau for the award.

Bilodeau has advocated for gender-inclusive policies, especially for transgender students.

WHS Students performed in Waukesha at Singing in Wisconsin

Two students from Whitewater High School traveled to Carroll University in Waukesha on Saturday, November 10, to participate in Singing in Wisconsin. Singing in Wisconsin is a choral festival that takes place in four locations throughout the state. Students in each location learn their music and then present a concert in the afternoon. All of the students in each of the locations learn the same pieces and present their concert at the same time in each venue. The students from WHS sang in the Mixed High School Choir with Ms. Amelia Armstrong as the guest conductor. Students pictured left to right are Jacquelin Villarreal and Anisa Dauti.

Volunteer Builds Boot Brush Station at Bluff Creek State Natural Area

Virginia Coburn, The Coburn Company, Steven Witt, and Maggie Zoellner, Executive Director, Kettle Moraine Land Trust at the new wader wash/boot brush station.

There is a new feature at Bluff Creek State Natural Area – a wader wash/boot brush station created by Whitewater resident Steven Witt. Steven, who owns a welding business, volunteered his time to create the wash station with materials provided by The Coburn Company and Kettle Moraine Land Trust.

The brush station is at the west entrance to Bluff Creek on County Highway P south of Highway 12 near Whitewater. Anglers and hikers leaving the creek will be able to clean their waders and boots, which will help prevent the spread of invasive species such as the New Zealand Mudsnail.

Thanks go to Steve, The Coburn Company, and Kettle Moraine Land Trust for partnering on this worthy venture, and to the many Southern Kettle Moraine SNA volunteers who work to protect the habitat at Bluff Creek.
