Eugene “Gene” Goeglein passed away peacefully on April 26, 2021 in Lake in the Hills, IL surrounded by his family

Eugene Goeglein
Born: November 10, 1949 in Fort Atkinson, WI
Died: April 26, 2021 in Lake in the Hills

Eugene “Gene” Thomas Goeglein , 71, of Lake in the Hills Illinois, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 26, 2021 surrounded by his family. Gene was born November 10, 1949 in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin to parents Eugene and Rosemary (nee Roe) Goeglein.

Gene resided in Whitewater, Wisconsin until he went off to study education at the University of Nebraska. He received his Bachelor’s in education while playing football for the Nebraska Cornhusker’s as a walk on. This is where the start of his lifelong love for the Nebraska Football Program began. Gene went onto receive his Master’s in Education from the University of Madison and completed his education with post graduate work in education policy and leadership studies at Loyola University.

Gene spent 41 years in the field of education, having many roles including physical education teacher, football/track/wrestling coach, athletic director, dean of students, principal and finished his career as the Regional Superintendent of McHenry County. Gene retired in 2011, however continued to work with the schools, performing health, life and safety inspections until 2020.

While Gene loved his career, nothing meant more to him than his two daughters, Kate and Kristie. The love he had for his girls was evident in everything he did. That love became seven times sweeter when they gave him the most precious gift of all, his grandchildren. In the many roles he had throughout his life, “Papa” was by far his proudest and most honored role.

When Gene wasn’t working, with his family, or cheering on his Huskers, he could be found on the golf course, sharing his famous jokes and stories with the lifelong friends he made on the greens.

Gene will be remembered by his daughters, Kate (Adam) Brink, and Kristie (Aaron Krejci) Brokaw, their mother Linda Goeglein, his grandchildren, Jay, Cameron, Taylor, Owen, Gavin, Cayden, and Alivia, his siblings, Maribeth McLaughlin, Walter Goeglein, and Catherine (Jamie) Heber, along with many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Gene’s name may be made to Big Brothers Big Sisters of McHenry County, as he was always giving back to the children, he spent his life educating.

Visitation will be Monday, May 3, 2021 from 4:00 p.m. to time of prayer service 6:30 p.m. at DeFiore Funeral Home, 10763 Dundee Road, Huntley. Mass will be held Tuesday, May 4, 2021 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, 10307 Dundee Road, Huntley.

REVISED: WHS to Host Sectional Cross Country Meet on May 1, Races Condensed, Start Times Updated

Information Provided by Chad Carstens
Whitewater High School Head Cross Country Coach
ccarstens@wwusd.org

UPDATE: Since we posted the meet information on Monday, April 26th, we have had three teams opt-out from our sectional on Tuesday, April 27th. In addition, several teams are bringing incomplete teams which has dropped us below the 76 runner threshold that has been approved for the WIAA State Meet. Lastly, the weather forecast has indicated that it is going to be near 80 degrees in Whitewater on Saturday. This new race schedule is also an attempt to reduce the chances of medical emergencies and avoid the hottest point of the day. For these reasons, we have been given clearance to run one race per gender. We will not move the beginning part of the schedule as we need to accommodate teams traveling a far distance. Box assignments will be changing and Coach Carstens will update the Meet Information when those become available.

Whitewater High School is hosting one of four Sectional Cross Country meets taking place around the state on Saturday, May 1st. There will be a $6 per person charge to enter the meet.

10:30 am: Spectators/Buses can arrive and begin unloading
11:00 am: Course Opens for Preview
12:00 pm: Girls’ Race
12:45 pm: Boys’ Race

Please check out this meet information for race times and other pertinent information.

Check out the digital course map that will highlight how the traffic will flow, spectator routes, etc.

You can also preview the course faster than the world record pace by watching this video of the course.

The top two teams and top 5 individuals not on those qualifying teams will earn a trip to the WIAA State Meet on Saturday, May 8th.

Cheyenne Bohmann

The Whippet Softball Team opened their season with a loss to Clinton 11-5 on Tuesday, April 27. The Lady Whippets fought hard, but came up just short, as Clinton built an early lead and Whitewater couldn’t catch up.

The Whippets were led in hitting as Shyan Lesperance (freshman), Cheyenne Bohmann (freshman) and Kiyla Kopecky (senior) each contributed 2 hits.

Cheyenne Bohmann pitched the first 5 innings, and Ashlynne Bohnann pitched the last 2 innings for Whitewater. The girls did a good job of throwing strikes and making Clinton put the ball in play.

The Whippets did some very nice things as they had good base running from Alayna Alvarado, Kiyla Kopecky, and Shyan Lesperance.

The Whippets also had a good hitting day as they had 10 hits as a team.

The Lady Whippets next travel to East Troy for a game against the Trojans.

Football Team Thankful for Alternative Season

Carter Friend

Whitewater ended their Alternative Football Season on Friday, April 23, with a 34-6 loss at McFarland. For the second consecutive game, the Whippets scored their touchdown as the first half was ending. This week it was a 29-yard catch and run from the new quarterback, senior Jacob Heritage, to senior Chase Conn to the 3-yard line with less than 30 seconds left in the half. Heritage ran the ball to the goal line, and junior Carter Friend punched it into the end zone before the half ended. The previous week Brock Grosinske and Conn combined for a 35-yard completion in the end zone as the first half time ran out.

Head Coach Jason Bleck and his coaching staff would like to thank the nine seniors on the team for their leadership and dedication to the Whippet Football program over the last four years and especially during this alternate season.  Although the season did not end with the record they would have hoped for, the team is proud and grateful for the opportunity to play.  Thank you also to the school administration, parents, and event workers for all they have done to support the football team.  This season truly followed the team’s motto of, “We Over Me,” as there were many selfless people that contributed to the team being able to compete.
