Comments from Coach Dittmer:

This was a flighted tournament which means that everyone was bracketed against other players at their flight (all #1 singles together, all #2 singles together, etc.).

As a school, our players only won three matches on the day. across all flights. This was in part due to us missing some of our key players which meant a lot of guys had to play in a tougher spot than usual in our lineup. The other factor was that the teams in this tournament were really good. It was certainly among the best tennis we have faced this season. Arno Crowley got one of our three wins at #4 singles and finished 6th on the day. Our other wins came from our #2 doubles team of Slate Spear and Henry Bresser. The duo played very well and took second place at their flight. The final team scores have yet to be calculated, but I am guessing Whitewater finished in 8th place.

Despite all the losses, I was happy with our players’ effort and attitude throughout the day. After losing a lot of matches so handily it is easy to get down on yourself, but all of our guys stayed positive. It was also a cool opportunity for some of our JV players to get varsity action.

Our season continues on Monday with a home meet against Edgerton.

Comments from Coach Dittmer:

We won the meet 4-3 and improved to 2-3 in conference play. Big Foot has bested us the last couple years, so it was great to see our boys come out and play really well to get this win.

Slate Spear ended a losing streak tonight by playing a solid all-around match to win 6-0, 6-2. Austin Kaja added to his impressive season with another win at #2 singles. He is now 8-2 this year which is the top record on our team. Henry lost at #4 singles 6-3, 6-3. I did’t feel like he did anything to lose himself the match, but instead his opponent just came up with some really nice plays. Our #1 and #2 doubles teams took one the chin tonight. I didn’t think they played poorly, but Big Foot just had a couple of really nice doubles teams. Our #3 doubles team of Ramon Wence and Arno Crowley took another close victory by beating Big Foot in a 3rd set tiebreaker. They have continued to improve with each and every meet. With the meet tied at 3-3, everything came down to the #3 singles match featuring Nick Kuzoff from Whitewater and Nolan Peyer of Big Foot. They had an incredible match that lasted an hour longer than any of the others. Both teams had their players lined up against the fence watching and cheering on their players (picture taken from a parent is attached). It was a pretty cool scene. In the end, Nick won the battle by a score 7-6(5), 5-7, 1-0(2). I am so proud of our Captain’s effort and poise in such a critical match.

Our season continues tomorrow with varsity tourney in Beaver Dam.

Betty Phelps-Refior, 97, of Whitewater passed away on Thursday, May 2, 2019 surrounded by friends and family who loved her dearly at Fairhaven Retirement Community.

Betty was born on October 20, 1921 in Warsaw, Indiana to Royal and Erba (Hinkson) Pottenger. She graduated from Warsaw High School and later graduated from Manchester College with a degree in occupational therapy.

In 1950, Betty married Charles Phelps in Peru, Indiana. Together they raised two children. Charles passed away in 1969. Later, Betty met Everett Refior and they married in 1996 in Warsaw, Indiana. After marrying, they moved to Whitewater where Betty lived for 22 years. Everett passed away in 2006.

Betty was a member of the World Federalists Organization, studied Esperanto and was a member of the Community of Christ the Servant. She enjoyed walking two to three miles each day and continued her walking where she would greet the morning Fairhaven staff up until several weeks before her death. In 1986 Betty joined the Great Peace March and spent several months walking the entire way from Los Angles to Washington D.C. She repeated Peace walks in several other countries including the Soviet Union. Riding her bike and working on her blue bird trail kept Betty active well into her 90’s. Betty was very passionate about saving the bluebirds and saving the bees and even donated her family farm to Michael Fields Institute for organic farming and to establish a bee sanctuary.

Betty is survived by her children, Rebecca (Linda Patrick) Phelps, Carl (Esther) Phelps; and grandson, Andy Phelps.
She is preceded in death by her siblings, Erna Esbenson, Ora Kunkle, and Jimmy Pottenger.

A time for fellowship in honor of Betty will take place at 2:30 PM on Tuesday, May 14th, 2019 at Fairhaven.
The family would like to give special thanks to all the kind staff at Fairhaven who came alongside Betty as friends for over 20 years.

If you would like to give a gift in her honor, in lieu of flowers a gift of $30.00 to Heifer International would send a hive of bees to a farming family and would be a fitting tribute. https://www.heifer.org/gift-catalog/animals-nutrition/honeybees-donation.html

Comments from Coach Dittmer:

We won both our meets tonight, improving our team to a 6-4 record. Across the entire triangular there were some great matches! Austin Kaja and Nick Kuzoff won both of their matches on the night at #2 and #3 singles respectively. I was really impressed with their play tonight as they were very consistent and didn’t make many errors. They were able to come up with some of their best play at the big points. After losing his first match, Henry Bresser rebounded and dominated his second #4 singles match against University Lake. Slate Spear lost both his matches to two tough opponents. Our doubles tandem of Ramon Wence and Arno Crowley continues to impress. Even though they are only Freshmen, they played very poised during their matches. I couldn’t be happier with their results. Colin Chenoweth and Broderick Frye won a match and lost the other. I can tell that they are really starting to play well together. They really compliment each other’s strengths and weaknesses, which makes them a tough duo. Shane Kinson and Andy Vo looked good as well. Even though it was their first time playing together, they were still able to win in a 3rd-set tiebreak. Arturo Aguilar and Calvin Baker lost their lone match at #3 doubles, but I was happy with how they played. They typically play JV, but had to step up and play varsity due to some absences. I thought this was the best they played all season. Our season continues tomorrow with another home meet against Big Foot.

Comments from Coach Dittmer:

McFarland beat us 7-0 tonight dropping us to 1-3 in conference play. There is not a lot to say except that we ran into a very good team tonight.

McFarland had exceptional players from the top to the bottom of their lineup that could all place the ball and control the net. In his losing effort, I felt Austin Kaja played a good match. After losing the first set 6-0, he was willing to adjust his game and move into the net more which helped him improve to a 6-3 defeat in the second set. Henry Bresser got off to a strong start in his match and did a good job attacking the net which forced some errors from his opponent. However, his opponent was able to raise his play as the match went on and won a lot of the big points. Our #3 doubles also showed some promise in their 6-2, 6-3 loss. They got themselves into some great positions, but just were not able to put the point away when they needed to. Credit McFarland for some great hustle and the ability to win the critical points.

Our next meet is home tomorrow against University Lake School. I am hoping that we can come out and play a little better than we did tonight.

WHS Soccer draws vs Beloit Memorial

Article by Coach McCrea

On Monday, April 22 Whitewater Girls’ Soccer hosted a non-conference match against Beloit Memorial concluding with a 0-0 contest.

On a very cold and rainy evening Whitewater Girls’ Soccer hosted the Clinton Cougars in Rock Valley Conference play and finished the contest with a 10 – 0 win allowing the Whippets to improve to 3-2 in RVC play and 4-6-2 overall.

In spite of miserable weather the Whippets played well during both halves and with a number of varying roster combinations. The young Cougars played well and demonstrated good sportsmanship in spite of the lopsided Whippet victory. In short, Senior Meikayla Korf finished the game with three goals, followed by Jaden Henneman (2), Sierra Brunner (1), Jordyn Korf (1), Carmen Kraayvanger (1), Nicole Sedmak (1) and Brianna Zimdars (1). Cora Linos recorded the win in goal with 3 saves.
