Whitewater Hosts Six-Team “Quad”; Nelson Secures 300th Career Coaching Victory

The Whitewater Invite on Tuesday, August 20 was a rather long day with many logistical problems. In order to help out a couple of teams that had some schools back out of their quad, the Whitewater Quad ended up with six teams. In order for this to work, it was going to require some schools moving back and forth between Whitewater and Fort Atkinson. The weather decided to make things even more difficult with a few rain delays in Whitewater, which forced even more teams to move to Fort. Of course a half an hour after teams moved to Fort it rained at the Aquatic Center courts, but not over at the Fort Atkinson High School courts. With all of the delays and moving around there were a few teams that were only able to get two matches in, and others were able to get all three in.

Whitewater was one of the schools that only finished two of their matches with 6-1 wins over both West Salem and Fort Atkinson.

Coach Tim Nelson stated, “I was quite pleased with how we played today. We showed improvement from yesterday’s quad and continued to make the strides that we need to. The match of the day was between Kaitlyn Partoll and Olivia Granec of Fort. The two girls played a number of incredible points in a match that went back and forth before Kaitlyn was able to pull it out with the closest of super tie-break scores.” Wednesday the Whippets headed up to Altoona to participate in the Altoona Invite on Thursday and Friday.

The Whippet victories secured the 300th career win for Coach Tim Nelson.

Whippet Tennis Team Opens Season with Quad

The Whippets started their 2019 tennis season at the East Troy Quad on Monday, August 19, facing some very solid competition. East Troy went 3-0 on the day taking the championship followed by Union Grove at 2-1, Whitewater at 1-2, and Monroe at 0-3.

Coach Tim Nelson stated, “We are going to face some growing pains to begin the season as we have several new players and many others that have had to move up quite a bit in the line-up. Today I felt that we were moving in the right direction. Every match the kids played better;  they started making strides in many areas and did what we needed to do to start improving. We definitely have things that we need to work on, but that is what these early matches are good for, showing where your strengths and weaknesses are and what you need to do to get better.”

The team was right back at it on Tuesday with three more matches in the Whitewater Quad.

Jean worked in the lunch program at Palmyra Elementary School. She was the Friday night fish fry hostess at the Nite Cap Inn for many years and later the Cornerstone Restaurant. She enjoyed seeing her regular customers each week and hearing about their families.

She hosted the entire family for holidays and always made an assortment of delicious desserts. Jean’s recipes will live on as her grandchildren make delicious food from her hand-written cookbooks which she gifted them. She made sure her family and friends received a Hallmark card for every special occasion. Jean was a caring, thoughtful, and determined woman. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren miss her dearly.

Jean is survived by three children, Bonnie (Glen) Schaefer of Fort Atkinson, Steven (Linda) Steinhoff of Palmyra, and Susan Mehring of Fort Atkinson; seven grandchildren, Michael Steinhoff, Juliana (Timothy) Gebhart, Alex (Emily Bralick) Mehring, Benton Steinhoff, Jonathan (Laura) Schaefer, Eric (April) Mehring, and Lacey Mehring; a great-grandson, Connor Gebhart; six step-grandchildren; ten step-great-grandchildren; a special sister-in-law, Janice Emery; and a special cousin, Sister Ellen Shannon. Purple Angel Recognition Awarded to Long Standing Local Business

The Whitewater Dementia Friendly Community Initiative (WDFCI) is excited to announce the awarding of the Purple Angel recognition to Binning & Dickens Insurance. They have been in business in Whitewater for 28 years and offer great service and pricing on home, auto, business and life insurance.

The Purple Angel is an international symbol recognized around the world, which says employees have received dementia awareness training and are sensitive to customers and care partners who are affected by dementia or Alzheimer’s. An engaged community seeks to honor, value and include all of its members. Look for the Purple Angel award wherever you go. If you don’t see it, ask “Why not?”

Ron Binning, Peggy Smithson, Deb Weberpal (WDFCI), CJ Wagner, and Mike Dickens

A Dementia Friendly Community is one that engages people with dementia, making them feel welcome and improving their quality of life while supporting their unique needs as well as those of the care partners and family members. This enables those with dementia to safely find their way around town, access local facilities that they have known, and maintain their social networks, so they continue to feel they belong. This eases the fear and isolation associated with dementia and increases access to the resources people need to live well with dementia. It is also treating persons with dementia with dignity and respect. By helping everyone in a community understand what dementia is and how it affects families, each of us can make a difference for the people touched by dementia.

The number of businesses taking the steps necessary to be designated as dementia friendly is continuing to grow. One of the principal purposes for the WDFCI is providing free training programs to those who live and work in Whitewater, as well as businesses, faith communities and organizations serving area residents.

The mission is to create a Dementia Friendly Community that features effective, ongoing programs to include and support individuals with dementia and their care partners. To-date the WDFCI has offered memory screens, published an informational brochure, started a memory café and a twice monthly respite site and provided, in partnership with Mulberry Glen, Dementia Live, a virtual dementia experience, and is working with the Irvin L. Young Memorial Library to provide distraction boxes for checkout. The Whitewater Community Foundation has given the group two grants to assist with startup costs.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, the estimated number of people in Walworth county with Alzheimer’s/dementia in 2020 is 2,132 of which approximately 200 live in Whitewater. By 2040, the county estimate will have grown to 4,432. It is important to know that Alzheimer’s is not a normal part of aging, however aging is a risk factor. By age 85, one in three is expected to have Alzheimer’s/dementia.

For more information, to become Purple Angel recognized or to join the WDFCI, please contact Deb Weberpal at 262- 473-0535 or email dweberpal@whitewater-wi.gov or check out our Facebook page Whitewater Dementia Friendly Community Inniative. The WDFCI is assisted and supported by the Alzheimer’s Association of Southeast Wisconsin and the Dementia Friendly Community Initiative, Inc – Walworth County.

$11,000 in Forgivable Grants Available to Help with Down Payment and Closing Costs to Purchase a Home

Note: This event applies to the entire City of Whitewater whether located in Jefferson or Walworth County.  This particular seminar will be conducted in Spanish.

RoxAnne Witte of the Jefferson County Economic Development Consortium announced today that there is money available to assist those seeking to purchase a home, purchase a bigger home, or downsize to a smaller home in Jefferson/Dodge/Walworth/Washington/Ozaukee/Waukesha Counties. These down payment assistance grants are available to qualified buyers in all communities in Jefferson County. Seminars for this program are being held on a monthly basis at the UW Extension/Workforce Development Building in Jefferson. The seminar for August will be held on Wednesday, August 21, 2019, 5:30 – 9:30 pm and will be held in Spanish.

“Our goal is to help families buy homes and be successful homeowners,” said Roxanne. “The complexity of the home buying process should not be a barrier to families.  Our homebuyer education program is the first step and maybe the most important step, which a family can take to achieve the dream of homeownership.”

She went on to say that buying a home is generally the single largest purchase and financial commitment a person makes in their lifetime.  The program offers potential/current owners with education on the purchasing process and the many requirements associated with home ownership.  These include maintenance, insurance, taxes and event how to budget for your household.  In addition the seminar will cover topics on how to determine your readiness for home buying; the roles of the lender, real estate agent, insurance agent and home inspection; and most important – what grant assistance may be available to help with down payment and closing costs and required repairs.

Jefferson County Economic Development Consortium’s homebuyer education program is designed to be results oriented and tailored to meet the participant’s needs, no matter what phase of home buying process they are in or how long it will take for them to be ready to buy a home. Participants will gain a thorough knowledge of the home buying process while at the same time finding local resources to help them achieve their goal.

For more information on the program and to see if you would qualify for these grants or to register for the August 21, 2019 seminar, please contact RoxAnne at 920-674-8711 or roxannew@jeffersoncountywi.gov. You may also register online at www.jeffersoncountyhomebuyer.com.
