Whitewater Community Gives Generously to Mitten Tree Project

Shown above, on Jan. 21st, accepting a good portion of the collection of more than 600 items from the Mitten Tree project are Rick Fassl, Optimist Project Co-Chair; Kelly Seichter, Director of Instruction; Dr. Lanora Heim, Director of Pupil Services; Jeanine Fassl, Co-Chair of the Optimist Project, and Dr. Jim Shaw, Superintendent for the Whitewater Unified School District.

By Jeanine Fassl

It is with our most sincere gratitude that the UW-Whitewater/Community Optimist Club extends a huge thank you to our community. The community responded beyond our expectations! The wonderful people in our community donated over 600 pieces of clothing including socks, underwear, snow pants, hats, scarves, gloves, and 160 pairs of mittens. 105 pairs of those mittens were hand knit by Dottie Koenitzer of Whitewater. A special thanks is given to the generosity of Faye Brugge, at First Citizens State Bank, Diane Carlson, from First English Lutheran Church, for the adorable baby sweaters, those who knit and crochet at PremiereBank and all the other community members who painstakingly hand made dozens and dozens of hats, mittens, sets of both, and scarves! The increase in the collections allowed us to spread out the distribution to other local agencies including the Whitewater Police Department; each of our 10 WPD squad cars received a bag of hats and a bag of mittens or gloves to distribute.

Additional thanks go to the Associated Bank, PremierBank, First Citizens State Bank, Fort Community Credit Union, and First English Lutheran Church, and Irvin L. Young Auditorium for serving as collection sites.

As “Friends of Youth”, the UW-Whitewater/Community Club thanks our very generous local community for helping to spread Christmas cheer this holiday season. We are always looking for new members, year-round, to share that cheerfulness with Whitewater’s youth. If you are interested in joining us in that mission, contact Al Hutchison, President, at alnjoyce.hutchison@gmail.com or visit

UW-Whitewater Men’s Basketball to Hold “Kisses From Keegan Night” on Sat., 1/25

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men’s basketball team will join Barkley’s Burgers, Brews & Dawgs in Janesville to support Kisses From Keegan & Friends, a local pediatric cancer foundation, on Saturday, Jan. 25, for the team’s game against UW-Oshkosh at 5 p.m. at Kachel Gymnasium.

Fans are invited to participate in a silent auction and other fundraisers throughout the game to support the organization. Members of the men’s basketball program have worked to fundraise for the event on campus and in the Whitewater community. The Warhawks will also recognize Keegan and members of the foundation’s board during the game.

“It is our hope that this event will become an annual event and part of the UW-Whitewater men’s basketball tradition,” UW-W coach Pat Miller said. “Kisses From Keegan & Friends is a local, non-profit organization that helps families of children who are undergoing treatment for cancer. It is a perfect opportunity for our student-athletes, staff and fans to engage with this organization and the community for a cause that hits close to home for a lot of people in our area.”

Kisses From Keegan & Friends was originally inspired by a 7-year-old cancer survivor named Keegan, who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. She survived after more than two years of chemotherapy, pills, shots, lumbar punctures, surgeries and other complications.

UW-W Chancellor Watson Announces Plan to Reduce Operating Expenses by $12 Million Over Two Fiscal Years Due to Declining Enrollment

In a message to the UW-W campus on January 23, Chancellor Dwight C. Watson announced that due to declines in enrollment, it is expected to be necessary to reduce operational expenses by $6 million in the current fiscal year that ends June 30, and by an additional $6 million in the 2021 fiscal year. It was indicated that these would be “base budget cuts, not one-time reductions.”

“As you likely know, UW-Whitewater has experienced enrollment declines since the 2016-17 academic year. This fall, we faced a drastic decline in enrollment – 4.1 percent. That means we had 498 fewer students than the prior fall. The decline in enrollment has caused a decrease in tuition revenue of approximately $11 million from our peak enrollment in 2016,” the message stated. Undergraduate enrollment declined on both the Whitewater and Rock County campuses. Declining high school graduation classes at some districts in the region have contributed to the losses.

Among the reduction in expenses will be a combination of contract non-renewals, reduction in appointment times and layoffs. Meanwhile, efforts are ongoing to increase recruitment of new students. A new Strategic Enrollment Plan was approved last summer, with specific emphasis on recruitment of Latinx students and students with disabilities.

The announcement concluded, “I understand this news may be difficult to digest. Let’s remember that UW-Whitewater has discerning and dedicated employees. I believe by focusing on our values, and through collaboration and creative problem solving we can develop long-term solutions that will help stabilize the budget, create new sources of revenue and strengthen our enrollment. I know this is a campus that cares deeply about our students and our mission to serve, and as we tap into that dedication to UW-Whitewater we will overcome these challenges.”
