City of Whitewater Announces an Ordinance Amending Subsection 12.20.020
SNOW AND ICE REMOVAL REQUIRED

The Common Council of the City of Whitewater recently passed an ordinance which
increases the charge for removing snow and ice from sidewalks. The $50 charge has
been raised to a minimum of $100 for a first-time offense and a minimum of $150 for
subsequent offenses if the City is required to remove the snow/ice. Residents are
required to remove snow and ice from the public sidewalk, including crosswalk ramps
abutting their property, within 24 hours after a snow or ice event. Residents who do not
remove snow and ice within this timeframe, causing the City to remove the snow/ice, are
subject to these charges beginning March 1, 2020.

UW-Whitewater waives $50 application fee for transfer students through May 1

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater has announced the $50 application fee will be waived for all future transfer students until May 1, 2020. The waiver begins immediately for transfer students applying for either summer 2020 or fall 2020 terms at both the Whitewater and Rock County campuses.

“Transfer students join us with various experiences — from community and technical colleges to military tours of duty and other four-year universities,” said Jackie Briggs, director of admissions. “Knowing the fee can be a barrier for students to complete their application, we’re excited that this waiver will let more students express their interest in joining the Warhawk family, whether on campus or for our online programs.”

Now through May 1, transfer students are encouraged to select “Skip Payment” when prompted for payment when completing a UW System online application to UW-Whitewater. The no-cost application for transfer students is generously funded through a donation by community partner DLK Enterprises, Inc.

“Student success is a priority at UW-Whitewater, which continues to be a great choice for transfer students within the region and beyond,” said Briggs. “We warmly welcome around 1,000 new transfer students into the Warhawk family at our UW-Whitewater main and Rock County campuses each year.”

Each year, UW-Whitewater helps students from more than 250 schools, colleges and universities across the state and country transfer to the university. UW-Whitewater offers a high-quality, affordable college education with outstanding outcomes, including one of the highest transfer retention rates in the UW System. Transfer students also graduate from UW-Whitewater at the highest rate of any comprehensive university in the UW System.

Prospective students who wish to transfer to UW-Whitewater should complete the UW System online application and provide official final high school transcripts and official college transcripts from all institutions previously attended. Admissions consideration includes academic background and a range of factors including leadership, creativity, community service, and personal characteristics.

Fundraiser Raises Over $2000 for Life Beyond Brain Injury

Recently, The Delavan Whiskey Ranch hosted a benefit for Mr. Thomas Hapka, a Whitewater resident and UWW Alumni. Tom acquired a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and established an organization, Life Beyond Brain Injury to educate the public of his journey and support other TBI individuals with this disabling condition.

With support from local businesses, UWW students, football team and alumni, Tom and his committee collected donated items to raffle. The Whiskey Ranch provided advertisement, donations and staff to hold a much needed benefit on Tom’s behalf where they raised $2249 to benefit Tom and his organization. Whippet Wrestlers Begin Tournament Series Action

After a full week of practice and recovery from hosting the Rock Valley Conference Tournament, the Whitewater Wrestling Team hit the road to Evansville to begin their quest for an opportunity to compete in the WIAA State Tournament. The team was placed in a very tough region seeing top teams from the conference for the 2nd week in a row.

On this first leg of the state series, individuals must finish in the top two of their weight class to advance to next week’s section tournament, and the top team advances to the team section on Tuesday night.

After the dust settled and the mats were cleared, the Whippets did not end up quite where they had hopes of being. The team qualified two individuals to compete next week, keeping their dreams alive for a state title. David Cushman bounced back in a big way defeating a young man whom he had lost to in the conference semi-finals last week. David wrestled an outstanding match from start to finish to find his way into the finals. Here he dropped the championship to a very good wrestler from Edgerton.

Carter Friend also was able to avenge his loss in the conference finals last week as he won a very tight match 3-1 in overtime. Carter continues to make adjustments for this opponent as they have met many times over the course of the season, and the winning wrestler has won by either 1 point or in overtime.

Coming in third place and missing out on qualifying for the sectional were CJ Tomomitsu, Cooper Hammond, Cody Gamble, Aaron Porras, Marcus DePorter, and Will Leibbrand. All of these young men wrestled tough, winning their third place match and will be an alternate if something happens to the competitor who placed above them in the bracket.

Although the finish is not where the Whippets expected to be at the beginning of the season, the team wrestled tough on Saturday and should not hang their heads. Nobody went out and just cashed it in, but fought to the very last second. For the 9 underclassmen who competed but did not get through, they will get back to work and set new goals for next season.

Cushman and Friend will compete on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. again back in Evansville.

Coronavirus – an Editorial

An editorial by Lisa Dawsey Smith, Whitewater Banner Content Editor

We’ve seen the headlines and by now many of us have also seen the memes as the internet is often quick on the uptake to make a joke of what are frequently rather serious situations. But what are the real implications of Coronavirus to our community in Whitewater, WI? I’m hoping that some of the information sources I’ve found provide context, reassurance, and quality information for you as well.

The World Health Organization provides both a description of Novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) as well as a constantly updated timeline of relevant facts here.

The Centers for Disease Control also provides up-to-date information on 2019-nCoV here.

What about all of those face masks? Should I be wearing one? More on that here.

he CDC has an entire directive called: Clean Hands Save Lives. Find excellent tips (great for kids) on proper handwashing to stop the spread of illness here.

Medical professionals say that the average risk to Americans is very low for contracting coronavirus. Far more members of our local community are at risk for contracting influenza this winter season, so please wash your hands and stay home from work/school when you are ill. Also as a reminder for those who may be interested it is not too late to get a flu shot. Hospitals and clinics are seeing a big uptick in cases of the flu right now in the Madison area. The person in charge of monitoring the flu statewide says Wisconsin will likely see even sharper increases in the coming weeks. “We’re not at peak activity yet,” said DHS Influenza Surveillance Coordinator Tom Haupt. “We probably won’t be at peak activity for several weeks, followed by many more weeks of high activity.”

He was always proud of what his family had accomplished. He will be greatly missed by all for his smile and his oh-so-funny sense of humor. His unexpected death will forever leave an emptiness that will never be filled. We will miss you Tom!

Tom is survived by his loving wife, Connie McKearn of Whitewater, WI; children: Matthew McKearn of Whitewater, WI, Nicholas McKearn of Fort Stewart, GA, Maria (William) Jensen of LaCrosse, WI; 6 grandchildren: Morgan McKearn, Landon, Alyssa, Aiden McKearn, Erica and Erin Jensen; siblings: Patrick (Danette) McKearn of Beloit, WI, Carol Haskins of South Beloit, IL, Kathleen (Gary) Hensel of Beloit, WI; sister-in-law: Colleen McKearn of Janesville, WI; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Trio Recognized by NCWIT for Aspirations in Computing

Congratulations to senior Gwynne Sahyun, sophomore Morgan Hartwell, and senior Morgan Stillwagon on their recent recognitions from the National Center for Women and Information Technology (NCWIT) through the Aspirations in Computing Awards Program. Sahyun was named a 2020 NCWIT-WI Affiliate Winner of the NCWIT Awards for Aspirations in Computing, Hartwell was named a 2020 NCWIT-WI Affiliate Honorable Mention awardee, and Stillwagon was named a 2020 NCWIT-WI Affiliate Rising Star.

As stated on the NCWIT Aspirations in Computing Award web site, “Computing is a field created by innovative thinkers whose products and systems have become critical to our daily lives. Ideally, these technologies should be developed by a population as diverse as its users. Yet, this is not currently the case. As a society, we lose out on potential innovations when we do not have a diverse workforce fully participating in technology creation. The Aspirations in Computing program elements turn barriers into possibilities by offering exclusive awards, scholarships, internships, and community—building women’s leadership, technical, and entrepreneurial skills.”

This is the third year in a row that Sahyun has been recognized by NCWIT. Next year, she plans to attend a four-year college, likely MSOE, to study electrical engineering. Hartwell plans to eventually study engineering, and Stillwagon plans to pursue a career in firefighting or law enforcement. All three young women currently hold leadership positions on Ferradermis, Whitewater High School’s FIRST Robotics Team.

The young women will be recognized at an awards ceremony at MSOE on Sunday, May 3.
