UW-W Baseball Hosts NCAA Super Regional May 27-28

The No. 9 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team will host No. 12 UW-Stevens Point in the NCAA Super Regional this Friday-Saturday, May 27-28, at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium in Whitewater.

First pitch of the best-of-three series is set for Friday at 12 p.m. The second game is scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m. and the third game, if necessary, will take place 45 minutes following the conclusion of Game 2.

Tickets for the event will cost $10 per day for adults and $8 for seniors, students and youth above the age of 2 and can be purchased at the entry gate.

The winner of the Super Regional will advance to the NCAA Division III Championship, which is set for June 3-8 at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

The Warhawks (36-9 overall) won the NCAA Whitewater Regional over the weekend, defeating No. 20 Aurora 12-8 in the tournament final. UW-W earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament after winning the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season championship with a 25-3 record.

UW-Stevens Point (38-8) claimed the NCAA Stevens Point Regional title with a 21-8 victory against No. 18 North Central (Ill.) in the final. The Pointers claimed an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament as the 2022 WIAC Tournament champion.

UW-Whitewater and UW-Stevens Point met four times during the season. The Pointers took the opener by a 4-0 score on March 28 at Miller Stadium before the Warhawks took the next three meetings by scores of 2-0 on March 28 and 4-1 and 9-1 in back-to-back games on April 26 in Whitewater.

The two teams were ranked first and second in the final NCAA Region IX Ranking of the 2022 season.

Obituary: Jane Markham, 62, of Port Washington

Jane Markham, 62, passed away Saturday, May 21,2022 at her home in Port Washington of complications of diabetes.

Jane was born April 8, 1960 in Madison, Wisconsin, to Neal and Anna (Shepherd) Markham. She graduated from Whitewater High School in 1978, earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Sociology from UW-Whitewater in 1983, and a Bachelor of Science in nursing from UW-Milwaukee in 1988.

As a behavioral health registered nurse, Jane spent much of her 30-year career advocating for the mental health of her clients in Southeast Wisconsin. Jane had a talent for creating beauty, and enjoyed planting flowers wherever she lived.

Jane is survived by her sisters Elizabeth Ann (John) Catania, Phyllis Shepherd (Steve Millard), Sharon (David) Hahn, seven nephews, and longtime friend Skip Sharkey.
A memorial will be planned at a later time.

City Manager Cameron Clapper a Finalist for Dodge County Administrator

According to the Daily Citizen, Whitewater City Manager Cameron Clapper is one of four finalists for the administrator of Dodge County. Per an article that was posted on May 23, the successful candidate will replace Jim Mielke, who is retiring on June 1. “The four finalists have been invited to Juneau for a two-day assessment process that will take place on June 6 and 7,” the article states, adding that, “It is anticipated that a new permanent administrator will be in place by Aug. 1.”

The other finalists are Rebecca Bell, who has served as the Dodge County Human Services and Health Director since 2016; Daryl DeDeker, who is currently an assistant professor of accounting at UW-Stevens Point; and Scott Feldt, who currently serves as the county administrator in Kewaunee County.

Clapper has served as Whitewater’s city manager since 2012. Prior to that he served as interim city manager for four months upon the resignation of city manager Kevin Brunner, with whom he had worked as assistant city manager for two years.

According to wisconsindemographics.com, Dodge County is the 19th largest county of the 72 in the state, with a population of nearly 88,000. Walworth County is listed as 15th largest, with approximately 103,000 residents, and Jefferson County is shown as 20th largest, with approximately 85,000 people. The Dodge County seat is Juneau. (There is a Juneau county, but the city of Juneau is obviously not in that county.)

Coincidentally, Dodge County is being assisted in its search process by Public Administration Associates, LLC, a firm in which former Whitewater City Manager Kevin Brunner is President/Partner.

Fort’s Robert St. Bridge Closing, No Parking Taking Effect On Main St.

Editor’s note: The following announcement was provided by the City of Fort Atkinson.

The Robert Street Bridge in Fort Atkinson will close to all traffic on or after Tuesday, May 24, 2022 beginning at 5 a.m. for extensive reconstruction. To allow for added traffic volume, Main Street, between just south of S. 3rd Street and N. 3rd Street, will be restriped to four lanes of active traffic, removing all on-street parking. All parking on side streets will remain available. Pedestrian detours will be marked on sidewalks. See the map below.

The bridge will undergo a total deck replacement, including a dedicated left turn lane northbound, signal coordination at Third Street, decorative lighting, a parapet wall and wider sidewalk along with a decorative fence/rail. When the project is complete, the bridge will be safer for pedestrian and vehicular traffic and more aesthetically-pleasing.

Traffic signals will be coordinated through the Main Street corridor to allow for better traffic flow in the downtown area. Additional signage will also be placed at significant intersections.

The bridge will reopen and Main Street will return to two lanes of traffic with on-street parking on or before Aug. 27, 2022.

Krystal Walsh Elected to Chamber of Commerce Board

The Whitewater Chamber of Commerce recently elected Krystal Walsh, Branch Manager of PremierBank’s Whitewater office, to serve on its Board of Directors. The announcement was made during the celebration of the Whitewater Chamber of Commerce’s 80th Anniversary dinner.

Walsh has an associate degree in Business Management from Northeast Wisconsin Technical College in Green Bay. After moving to Southeast Wisconsin, Walsh worked at a regional credit union, working her way up to Assistant Branch Manager. She joined PremierBank in April 2021 as the Branch Manager for the Whitewater location. Having nearly two decades of customer service and sales experience, Walsh is a perfect fit.

The No. 9 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team claimed the NCAA Whitewater Regional championship with a 12-8 victory against No. 20 Aurora (Ill.) in the second of two games played Sunday at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium.

The Warhawks (36-9 overall), who claimed their first regional title since the format shifted to a four-team tournament, will take on No. 12 UW-Stevens Point Friday and Saturday, May 27-28, in a best-of-three series in the NCAA Super Regional Round.

After dropping the first game of the day by a 13-8 score, UW-Whitewater responded well in the night cap, posting 14 hits and getting clutch pitching performances on its way to a 12-8 triumph and the program’s first regional championship since 2016.

Centerfielder Zach Campbell and third baseman Matt Korman led the offense. Campbell finished 4-for-4 with three runs scored and three runs batted in, while Korman registered two hits, including a three-run homer, and tallied three runs scored and four RBIs.

Left fielder Matt Scolan and second baseman Sam Vomhof each totaled two hits and two runs scored. Shortstop Bennett Frazer collected two hits and two RBIs, and first baseman Nick Paget, right fielder Jacob DeMeyer and cather Ryan Norton each plated one run.

Cade Berendt tossed the first five innings to pick up the win, improving to 7-0 for the season. Sam Paden pitched three-plus innings to bridge the gap to Donovan Brandl, who got the final three outs in the bottom of the ninth inning.

The three UW-W pitchers combined to strand 10 Spartan runners in the contest.

The two teams traded runs in the first inning. Campbell’s two-out double to right center plated Vomhof to give the Warhawks the early lead. Aurora (36-11) responded in the bottom half of the frame with two runs to take the lead.

Korman homered with two outs in the third for his second long ball in as many days, giving UW-Whitewater a 4-2 advantage. The Spartans cut their deficit to 4-3 with a run in the bottom of the inning.

The Warhawks broke the game open in the fifth with four runs. Paget started the scoring with a run-scoring base hit up the middle and was followed by Korman, who smashed a single to right center that scored one run. DeMeyer added an RBI double and Frazer hit a sacrifice fly for an 8-3 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Spartans rallied for two runs before Scolan threw out a third run trying to score on a base hit to left, keeping the UW-W lead at 8-5.

Aurora threatened again in the sixth, but Paden pitched out of it, leaving the bases loaded with a fielder’s choice ground ball to short.

UW-Whitewater added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth. Frazer knocked a base hit to center to score one run before Norton hit a sacrifice fly to left in the seventh. In the eighth, Campbell came through with a two-out, two-run double to right center to make it 12-5.

The Spartans touched home plate three times in the bottom of the ninth before Brandl retired the final three batters of the contest.

In the first game of the day, Aurora plated seven runs in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth to take a commanding lead. UW-W scored six times in the ninth inning before the rally came up short.

Korman collected three hits, including two doubles, with one run scored and one RBI. Scolan knocked in three runs, while Vomhof tallied two hits and one run scored. Second baseman David Rubin finished 2-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI and Campbell and Paget each added one hit, one run scored and one RBI.

Pitcher Cam Anfang dropped to 4-1 on the season with the loss. Nick Rector and Trey Bretl each pitched in relief.

The winner of this week’s Super Regional series will earn a trip to the NCAA Division III World Series, which is set for June 3-8 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

UW-Whitewater and UW-Stevens Point played four times during the regular season. The Warhawks took three of the four meetings, all played at Miller Stadium in Whitewater.

The No. 9 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team used a timely offense and strong pitching Saturday to defeat No. 20 Aurora (Ill.) 8-4 on the second day of the NCAA Whitewater Regional at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium.

The Warhawks (35-8 overall) will play in Sunday’s regional championship game against the winner of tonight’s Aurora/Augustana game. First pitch of the contest is scheduled for 11 a.m.

UW-Whitewater smashed three homers and totaled 13 hits in Saturday’s game. Kade Lancour allowed two runs over seven innings to improve to 9-0 on the year. Cade Berendt tossed the final two frames in relief.

Left fielder Matt Scolan tallied three hits, including a solo home run, a triple and a bunt single, and knocked in a pair of runs. Third baseman Matt Korman tallied two hits, including a two-run homer, and designated hitter Sam Paden registered two hits, including a two-run homer and a run-scoring double.

Catcher Ryan Norton posted two hits, two runs scored and one RBI and second baseman David Rubin collected a pair of hits.

The Warhawks were first on the board thanks to Scolan’s solo homer with two outs in the bottom of the third, his sixth of the year and second of the regional tournament.

After the Spartans (34-10) took the lead in the top of the fourth, UW-Whitewater responded in the fifth on Paden’s go-ahead, two-run homer to make it 3-2.

The Warhawks turned the game in the sixth. Following a 1-2-3 top half by Lancour, Korman hit a two-run homer the opposite way to right field, his fourth of the season, to increase the advantage to three runs. Norton and Paden hit RBI doubles later in the frame to make it 7-2.

UW-W added an insurance run in the eighth on a bases-loaded walk by Scolan.

Aurora tallied twice with two outs in the top of the ninth, but Berendt induced a pop-up with the tying run in the on-deck circle.

A UW-W loss Sunday would force a decisive seventh game of the regional to start approximately 45 minutes following the completion of Sunday’s first game.
