Frye Leads Whippet Golfers at Regional Competition
Article and Photos by Coach Wiegman
A picturesque, but chilly Grand Geneva greeted the Whippet Golf Team on Tuesday as they competed in the WIAA Division 2 Golf Regional, hosted by Big Foot High School. The team finished with a score of 463. They were led by freshman Camden Frye, who fired a 108 playing from the team’s number five position. Head coach, Chris Wiegman, hoped placing Frye in the five spot would take some pressure off his freshman, allowing his natural golf swing to flourish a little more easily. “The biggest thing for Camden is playing relaxed and knowing that he has the swing to be great. He went out and played relaxed, but confident, and it showed in his score,” stated Wiegman.
Frye found himself coming off his toughest round of the year at the conference invitational a week prior, forcing him to go back to the drawing board over the last 6 days. “I tried to focus on getting my wrist turned during practice to fix a slice,“ stated Frye. “My mindset was that it’s just another day of golf.”
This mindset translated into the top spot for the Whippets, firing 55 on the front nine and a 53 on the back nine. Fellow freshman Jaden Condon battled some early struggles to finish with a 115, firing 63 on the front nine and a 52 on the back nine. Condon had the low back nine score for the Whippets. Sophomore Wesley Abramson was one back from Condon, finishing with 116, shooting 60, 56. Dane Hillmer and Maddie Arnett rounded out the scoring for the Whippets with scores of 124 and 126 respectively.
The regional competition completed the season for the Whippets, but members of the team found themselves excited for the future. “In the offseason, I mostly hope to keep playing as much as possible to come back better and stronger than this season,” said Wesley Abramson. Frye echoed those sentiments, “It makes me feel good knowing that I’m going into the summer with a strong round and working on becoming a better golfer.”
