Farewell ceremony for area Girl Scout Camp to be held March 3

Girl Scouts of Wisconsin – Badgerland Council will be holding a farewell ceremony next weekend for a Girl Scout Camp property in Walworth County. The grounds will be open to the public Sun., March 3 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., with a brief ceremony at 1 p.m.

Since it opened in 1967, Camp Oakwood Knoll in East Troy has introduced thousands of girls to the great outdoors. Girl Scouts current and past, as well as members of the community who hold the property close to their heart, are encouraged to visit the camp one last time.

Known for its hilly landscape, extensive hiking trails and cozy lodge, Oakwood Knoll has not only served girls in southern Wisconsin, but it has also hosted notable events, including a “Country Fare” in 1972 with Girl Scouts from all over the world. In 2012 and 2013, the camp was transformed into an adventure mud run for hundreds of women and girls.

The planned sale of the camp is part of a long-range property plan, adopted in 2014 by Badgerland Council’s Board of Directors. The council has three other active Girl Scout Camps around the state.

For more information about the event, visit gsbadgerland.org or Badgerland Council’s Facebook page.

Camp Oakwood Knoll is located at W3524 State Road 20 in East Troy, Wis.

Casas Closes Out High School Wrestling Career on Kohl Center Floor

Article by John Schimmer

Amaru Casas, shown in this file photo, competed in the State Tournament over the weekend. (Photo by Bob Mischka)

Amaru Casas closed out his high school wrestling career on the Kohl Center floor on Thursday evening.

Unfortunately, the state experience was short lived for Amaru. Although, he was disappointed right away, after reflecting it was a great opportunity. Amaru’s sole match at the state tournament came in a loss by fall to a very good sophomore from Wrightstown who ended up finishing in fourth place in the state. Amaru came out in the first period and wrestled his match on his feet, tying up his opponents hands and keeping his feet moving. Unfortunately he got out of position for a moment and was taken down near the end of the period. In the process of being taken down it was evident his opponent had a lot of mat time as an arm bar went in immediately and Amaru was pinned with 5 seconds left in the first period.

Even though Casas was defeated in his first match at the state tournament it was a great accomplishment for him to be there. This was the first year that he has had the opportunity to be a varsity wrestler full time and he made the most of it. He spent many days over last spring, summer and fall wrestling at open mats at either surrounding towns or at camps.

Amaru did not begin wrestling until his freshman year and knew very little about the sport. He did his best to seek out ways to get better and now has aspirations to compete at the college level. He has a steep learning curve and with his continued desire to make himself better he can have success at the next level.
