_______________

The No. 7 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater football team put together one of its most complete performances of the 2019 season on Saturday 12/7 with a 26-7 victory over No. 2 Mary Hardin-Baylor in a quarterfinal of the NCAA Division III Championship in Belton, Texas.

UW-Whitewater will host St. John’s (Minn.), a 34-33 winner at Wheaton (Ill.), in next Saturday’s national semifinal on ESPN3 at 2:00 p.m.
UW-W will make its 12th appearance in the national semifinals, all since 2005.

The Warhawks (12-1 overall) held the ball for nearly 43 minutes in the contest and piled up 358 yards of total offense, including 239 on the ground.

UW-Whitewater limited Mary Hardin-Baylor (now 12-1), the defending national champion which entered the game on a 27-game win streak, to 140 total yards, including minus-3 on the ground.

Senior running back Jarrod Ware (Bradley, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) tallied 14 carries for 110 yards and two touchdowns to lead the offense. Junior running back Alex Peete (Ringwood, Ill./Johnsburg) posted 76 yards, and junior quarterback Max Meylor (Mt. Horeb, Wis./Mt. Horeb) finished 10-of-12 for 119 yards passing and added one rushing touchdown. Junior wide receiver Ryan Wisniewski (Sparta, Wis./Sparta) caught five passes for 72 yards.

Senior defensive back Garrett Purdy (Naperville, Ill./Central) collected a team-high seven tackles for the defense, which forced three turnovers. Senior defensive lineman Jordan Brand (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita) recorded three stops, including one sack, and added one fumbler recovery. Junior linebacker Kaleb Kaminski (Tomahawk, Wis./Tomahawk) and junior defensive back Tommy Matoska (Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Kenosha Tremper) contributed five tackles apiece.

After forcing a punt on the opening drive, the Warhawks ate up nearly 11 minutes of clock with a 17-play, 79-yard drive. UW-W converted three third downs and drove inside the Crusaders’ 5-yard line, where they were stopped on third down for the first time in the contest. Junior kicker Wojciech Gasienica (Norridge, Ill./Ridgewood) split the uprights for a 19-yard field goal to make it 3-0 with 2:22 to play in the period.

UW-Whitewater forced a three-and-out to get the ball back quickly and put together a 12-play, 64-yard drive capped by a 2-yard touchdown run by Ware. Meylor completed 3-of-3 passes on the drive before Ware carried the ball for the final three plays, giving the team a 10-0 advantage with 8:23 left in the second quarter.

The two teams exchanged punts before Mary Hardin-Baylor got on the board, scoring a touchdown with under one minute left in the first half.

The Crusaders got the ball back in Warhawk territory following an interception, but the defense registered two sacks to push the ball back toward midfield and maintain the three-point lead.

UW-Whitewater started the second half with the ball, moving 85 yards on nine plays. After a barreling 23-yard run by Ware, Meylor hit Wisniewski for a 36-yard pass up the seam of the field, and Ware capped the drive six plays later with a 5-yard touchdown run. The score gave the Warhawks a 17-7 lead with 9:27 to play in the third.

Senior defensive back Nate Tranel (Lancaster, Wis./Lancaster) kept the momentum in UW-W’s favor with an interception on the next drive to stop a UMHB drive near midfield.

The two teams traded punts before Gasienica was good again, this time from 42 yards, to make it 20-7 just under one minute into the fourth quarter. The Warhawks ran eight straight times on the drive for 30 yards.

The Crusaders drove down to the UW-Whitewater 23-yard line on the ensuing drive, but a botched snap recovered by Brand gave the Warhawks the ball back with 10:14 remaining.

The Warhawks drove 67 yards on nine plays as Meylor ran around the left side for a 1-yard score at the 4:34 mark. Ware carried five times on the drive for 58 yards to set up the touchdown.

UW-Whitewater turned Mary Hardin-Baylor over on downs on the next drive, and ran out the clock to punch its ticket to the final four.

Computer Science Students Compete in Computational Thinking Challenge

On November 8, Whitewater High School students currently or formerly enrolled in computer science courses participated in Bebras International Computational Thinking Challenge. Bebras is an online competition where students are presented with 15 puzzles/questions that they are challenged to solve in 45 minutes or less.

The questions typically involve some sort of picture or graphical element that challenges students to think like a computer. For example, one of the questions this year asked students to find at most how many shoes someone had to try on to find the perfect size if all of the shoes in the store were arranged by size and width (see graphic). The answer is provided at the bottom of the article.

Herminia R. Vasquez of Whitewater passed peacefully on November 26, 2019

Herminia R. Vasquez of Whitewater, Wisconsin passed peacefully on November 26, 2019, surrounded by family and friends.

Herminia, or Minnie, as many people called her, was born in Laredo, Texas on July 19th, 1936 to migrant farmers Abraham and Elvita Rossell. She married her husband Eutimio Vasquez in 1958 and in 1959 they moved from Texas to Whitewater to build a new life in Wisconsin. Herminia at first was a stay at home mother, then worked at the Whitewater Foundry until she eventually found a permanent position at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater food service as a checker/cashier, where she retired after 30 years of dedicated service in 2012. Herminia loved her job at the University, especially the students who greeted her every day! She touched many students’ lives as she was the first face they would see in the morning prior to getting their breakfast. Always quick with a sweet smile and some funny comment, she was voted “favorite employee” many, many years in a row, not only from the company for which she worked, but campus wide! She was always very proud of that achievement! At the beginning of her retirement, she missed her job immensely but eventually settled in to be happy at home with her husband, either planning trips with her sister around the United States or going shopping or to the Casino on a whim. Minnie took pride in being an amazing cook, she loved plants and to landscape her yard but also took time on the weekends to watch her favorite sports teams: the Milwaukee Brewers, Wisconsin Badgers, Green Bay Packers, as well as a good boxing match.

Herminia was a very strong, funny, and hardworking woman. She and her husband took great pride in being one of the first Latino Whitewater residents to build their very own home on the corner of E. North and Newcomb St. where they lived for over 35 years. She was a completely selfless wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved babysitting her grandkids and loved dogs. She lived her life to make her entire family happy at all times. She encouraged her children and grandchildren to get a good education and to work hard. Her wisdom and her ability to make us all laugh, will be forever missed!

She is survived by her siblings: brother Jesus (Maria Guadalupe) Rossell, Juana (Avelino) Rodriguez, Eustulio (Eva) Rossell, Maria (Juan) Ramos, Gloria (Donato) Rios, her children: Jose (Elizabeth) Vasquez, Yolanda (Daniel) Hollenbeck, Arturo (Lina) Vasquez, Gloria (Michael) Vasquez-Leemkuil, grandchildren: Vanessa and Alessandra Hollenbeck, Gabriela, Sebastian, and Gianna Vasquez. She was preceded in death by her husband Eutimio Santos Vasquez, and her mother and father: Abraham and Elvita Rossell as well as five half-siblings.

We would like to give an immense thank you to Agrace Hospice from Janesville as well as Saran Bathchuulun, John Hethorn, their daughters: Kima and Oka, caretakers: Urna, Sunny, and Nimka, and all the other wonderful, kind, sincere caregivers who made it possible for both our parents to live out the last days of their lives together with dignity and respect! We will be forever grateful for the care and kindness you bestowed upon our parents and our family.

Visitation will be at the St. Patrick’s Church in Whitewater, Wisconsin at 10 a.m. on Friday, December 6, 2019 with the funeral service following at noon. Herminia will be laid to rest following the funeral service at Hillside Cemetery alongside her husband in Whitewater.

Marilyn (Mike) Taylor (born Marilyn Jane Wiemer) died on Tuesday, November 26, 2019

Marilyn (Mike) Taylor (born Marilyn Jane Wiemer) died surrounded by family on Tuesday, November 26, 2019. She was born in Burlington, WI on March 19, 1932 to Carolyn and Raymond Wiemer. At 18, she married her high school sweetheart, Merwyn (Mert) Taylor and moved to the family farm where they raised five children. They were later blessed with 16 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren all of whom she loved dearly.

Marilyn loved refinishing furniture, gardening, and sewing, but most of all quilting. It was her passion. When she ran out of children, their spouses, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren to give her quilts to, she donated them to people she never met and would never know. She was thrilled to see photos of Columbian children waking up from surgery wrapped in one of her quilts.

She was a quiet woman of great patience, gentle kindness, and self-giving. We are all richer for her loving example.

Marilyn is survived by her husband, Mert, sister, Joyce Zimmerman, children, Dianne (Dick) Dunham, Sally (Steve) Watson, Donna (Scott) Allenstein, Steve (Chelli) Taylor, Frank (Lisa) Taylor, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Services will be held Saturday, December 7 at Nitardy Funeral Home, Whitewater. Visitation begins at 10:00 with service at 11:00. Burial will follow at the LaGrange cemetery.

Memorials can be made to the Milwaukee Medical Mission.

Special thanks for the kindness of the emergency room staff at Mercy Hospital, Janesville.

The No. 7 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater football team engineered a big first half and hung on in the second half Saturday for a 41-28 triumph over Wartburg (Iowa) in the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship at Perkins Stadium.

The Warhawks (11-1 overall) advance to the national quarterfinals for the 13th time in the last 15 years and will face No. 1 ranked Mary Hardin-Baylor (12-0) (Texas) next Saturday, Dec. 7, 12:00 p.m. CST at MHB in Belton, TX.

UW-Whitewater held Wartburg (10-2) to 32 yards rushing and forced five turnovers in the contest.

Senior running back Jarrod Ware (Bradley, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) rushed for 58 yards, and junior tight end Jared Zausch (Saukville, Wis./Ozaukee) posted four receptions for 41 yards. Senior running back Ronny Ponick (Stanley, Wis./Stanley-Boyd) rushed for 31 yards and one touchdown and caught a 12-yard touchdown.

Senior defensive back Garrett Purdy (Naperville, Ill./Central) posted an interception on Wartburg’s first drive of the game, and UW-Whitewater took advantage of the good field position.

Five plays after a 26-yard completion from junior quarterback Max Meylor (Mt. Horeb, Wis./Mt. Horeb) to junior wide receiver Derek Kumerow (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin), junior running back Alex Peete (Ringwood, Ill./Johnsburg) dove over the pile at the goal line for a 1-yard touchdown with 9:17 on the clock.

The Warhawks doubled the lead two minutes later, taking advantage of a forced fumble by Kaminski. Ware ran down to the Knights’ 12-yard line, and Ponick caught a screen pass for a 12-yard score.

After a three-and-out, UW-Whitewater added to its lead on a 36-yard field goal by junior kicker Wojciech Gasienica (Norridge, Ill./Ridgewood) with 2:37 to play in the first quarter.

After a Wartburg touchdown, the Warhawks responded. Junior wide receiver Ryan Wisniewski (Sparta, Wis./Sparta) returned the ensuing kickoff 46 yards, then threw a 26-yard pass to Zausch on a reverse pass. Three plays later, Meylor ran around the right side for a 4-yard touchdown at the 11:32 mark.

Following a three-and-out by the Knights, senior Justin Prostinak (Milwaukee, Wis./Lake Country Lutheran) went untouched on the punt return 67 yards for the touchdown and a 31-7 advantage with 9:21 remaining in the first half.

UW-Whitewater was the first on the board in the third quarter as Gasienica knocked a 27-yard field goal through the uprights with 9:50 to play. The drive was keyed by Wisniewski’s 38-yard return to near midfield.

Wartburg scored on the next drive to cut its deficit to 34-14, but the Warhawks took advantage of strong field position again later in the quarter. Three plays after a key third-down completion from Meylor to sophomore wide receiver Tyler Holte (Elgin, Ill./St. Edward Central Catholic), Ponick pushed up the middle for a 1-yard touchdown and a 41-14 lead with 2:27 left in the period.

The Knights tacked on touchdowns on their next two drives and had the ball in UW-W territory just past the midway point of the fourth quarter, but Kaminski picked off Noah Dodd at the Warhawks’ 27-yard line.

After a UW-Whitewater punt to the Wartburg 9-yard line, Kaminski registered his second interception of the quarter and returned it to the Knights’ 14-yard line. From there, the Warhawks knelt out the final two minutes of regulation.

Next Saturday’s game against Mary Hardin-Baylor is a rematch of the 2018 national semifinal, which the Crusaders won 31-14 in Belton, Texas.
