Many Americans have become cynical in response to a perceived loss of civility in politics in recent decades. Social media and the 24-hour news cycle contribute to this seemly unbridgeable divide. Lines have been drawn, and heels dug in, as the left and right regularly square off for vicious exchanges in what now passes as American politics. We understand the frustration felt when facing an ideological opponent, but less understood is why the two sides exist in the first place. Brian Bentel takes on this daring question with the goal of increasing understanding between left and right, and adds another important question: are the values of either side reflected in the policies enacted by our two dominant parties?

Speaker: Brian Bentel, Ph.D., Lecturer, Dept of Sociology, Criminology and Anthropology, UW-W

UW-W Football Finishes as National Runner-Up; Trip Home Was Inconvenient at Best

It’s reported that after the game the Warhawks’ charter plane took off from Texas at 1 a.m. on Saturday and returned to the airport about 10 minutes later due to an engine problem. The scheduled return to Whitewater had been approximately 4 a.m., which would have make it possible for some of the team members and the Chancellor to participate in graduation at 10 a.m. Instead they spent the night at the airport awaiting a replacement plane, which arrived at about 8 a.m.

UW-Whitewater Football Finishes as National Runner-Up

SHENANDOAH, Texas – The No. 7 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater football team fell behind early Friday night and was unable to overcome the early deficit in a 41-14 setback against No. 5 North Central (Ill.) in Stagg Bowl XLVII, the NCAA Division III national championship game, at Woodforest Bank Stadium.

Appearing in their first Stagg Bowl since 2014, the Warhawks (13-2 overall) surrendered 27 first-half points and were unable to gain any momentum during the contest.

Junior quarterback Max Meylor tallied 15 carries for 104 yards and threw for 183 yards and one touchdown. Junior running back Alex Peete posted 17 carries for 79 yards and one score, and sophomore wide receiver Tyler Holte caught six passes for 64 yards.

Senior defensive back Nate Tranel paced the defense with 11 tackles, and senior linebacker Matt Anderson collected 10 tackles. Senior defensive lineman Jordan Brand totaled nine stops, including one for a loss, and freshman linebacker Terrell Williams finished with six tackles, including one sack.

The Warhawks, who finished with 207 yards rushing in the contest, were unable to convert on two trips inside the Cardinals’ 30-yard line in the first half.

After a North Central touchdown midway through the third quarter, UW-Whitewater got on the board. Freshman wide receiver Sam DeLany returned the ensuing kickoff 65 yards, Meylor hit junior tight end Jared Zausch for a 12-yard touchdown with 4:52 to play in the period.

The Warhawks made it a three-possession game after Peete plunged in from one yard out to complete a 15-play, 92-yard drive. Meylor keyed the drive with a 44-yard run and a 27-yard pass to Holte on fourth-and-19.

Senior linebacker Jacob Erbs recovered the ensuing onside kick at midfield, but UW-Whitewater was unable to take advantage, turning the ball back over to the Cardinals (14-1).

UW-Whitewater’s 2019 run included a share of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship and playoff wins over Monmouth (Ill.), Wartburg (Iowa), defending national champion Mary Hardin-Baylor (Texas) and St. John’s (Minn.).

UW-Whitewater police see string of catalytic converter thefts from parked cars

Crime alert issued by UW-W on 12/18/19

UW-Whitewater Police and area agencies are investigating a number of thefts of catalytic converters from parked vehicles, including from the Whitewater campus parking lots. Toyota vehicles, particularly the Prius models, are the main targets; however, all vehicle owners are advised to remain alert.

If you have information on these thefts please contact University Police at 262-472-4660, you may remain anonymous.

If you see suspicious activity immediately contact University Police by calling 911.

University Police have increased patrols in parking lots and are working diligently to locate the individual(s) responsible for these thefts. Owners wishing to further protect their vehicles can implement theft deterrent devices such as the “Catstrap”. A link for this type of product can be found here: https://www.catstrap.net/

If you believe your vehicle’s catalytic converter has been tampered with while parked on campus, please contact the UW-Whitewater Police immediately and DON’T move the vehicle.

The catalytic converter is a target for theft as it contains precious metals, including platinum and rhodium.

Criminals can steal the converter in a few quick steps and often go unchallenged by members of the public.

If your catalytic converter is stolen, you’ll know about it because your vehicle will sound different when the ignition is started.

They are often positioned on the underside and towards the front of the vehicle and can be removed by criminals in as little as five minutes with battery-operated tools.

Please feel free to contact University Police at 262-472-4660 or police@uww.edu, with any questions or information you may need.

Sincerely,
Chief Matt Kiederlen

Teresa M. Messier, 59, passed away on December 14, 2019

Teresa M. Messier, 59, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of December 14, 2019, at the Rainbow Hospice Center in Johnson Creek, with her loved ones by her side. Terry was born in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, on October 31, 1960 to Blaine and Shirley Messier. From that time forward, Terry, who was one of her Grandma Messier’s favorite grandchildren, acquired many nicknames, one of which was “pumpkin.”

Terry was considered a tomboy during her younger years, and one time broke her arm while using her swing set as a piece of gymnastics equipment. Terry had a great interest in cars, and as a High School student, Terry began working at Frawley Oil in Whitewater. After she graduated from Whitewater High School in 1979, Terry continued to work for the family she had become so close to until 2015, when she was diagnosed with an uncommon form of Parkinson’s disease, and was no longer able to work. Terry was a homebody, and took great pride in her cooking. Terry had an insatiable sweet tooth. To receive a plate of her homemade cookies was a treat indeed. Terry also enjoyed spending time with her many close friends.

Terry was preceded in death by her father, Blaine Messier, and her very dear friend, Vern Koch. Terry is survived by her life partner, Ron Thomas of Fort Atkinson; her Mother, Shirley Messier of Whitewater; two sisters, Michele Smith (Bill Smith) of Whitewater; and Karen Messier (Mark Simdon) of Fort Atkinson; and one niece, Alaina Smith (Jason Barajas) of Whitewater. Terry is also survived by numerous friends who have supported her immensely during her illness.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Rainbow Hospice and Visiting Angels. A special thank you is also extended to Bud Jones of Whitewater, who was instrumental in transporting Terry to her numerous Doctor appointments in Madison, and to Carol Messier of Fort Atkinson, who spent countless hours helping Terry with every-day tasks. The volunteers made dealing with her debilitating disease much easier to bear.

Nitardy Funeral Home of Fort Atkinson is assisting the family. Per Terry’s request, there will be no formal service. A small graveside burial service will be held on Friday, December 20, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Melendys Prairie Cemetery in Eagle, Wisconsin.
