Whitewater business leader embraces grocery leadership role

Lacey Reichwald recalls a community forum in 2015 after Whitewater’s only full-service grocery store said it planned to close its doors.

“I remember angry people pointing at city officials and saying that someone needs to do something about this,” she said.

Instead of looking to someone else to fix the problem, Reichwald jumped in with both feet.

“It occurred to me I can do something about this,” she said.

Today, the community has taken important steps to bring a cooperatively owned and full-service grocery to the city under the leadership of 36-year-old Reichwald.

No. 10 Warhawk Men Close Non-Conference Slate at 11-0

The No. 10 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men’s basketball team capped the 2018 calendar year and the non-conference portion of its season Saturday night with a 96-81 victory at Concordia Texas in the team’s second of two games in Austin, Texas.

Five players scored in double figures for the Warhawks (11-0 overall), who shot 50.8 percent from the floor, hit 15-of-25 from 3-point range and knocked down 19-of-24 at the free-throw line, including 17-of-19 in the second half.

UW-Whitewater begins Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Wednesday at 12th-ranked UW-Stevens Point. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. in Stevens Point.

Whippet girls drop game vs Oregon, 75-32

We had a tough loss against Oregon.  They had a good game inside and out and we struggled to get our offense going.

Cassidy Laue led with 13 points, followed by Abby Grosinske with 9 and Jocelin Beecroft with 5.

UW-Whitewater Women’s Basketball Tops 100 Points in Victory

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women’s basketball team finished the 2018 calendar year with its regular season non-conference finale Saturday afternoon, besting Methodist (N.C.) 101-36 on the second day of Transylvania’s Pat Deacon Classic in Lexington, Ky.

The Warhawks (7-4 overall) topped 100 points for the 10th time in program history and first time since 2013. The team’s 101 points are tied for the sixth-most in one game in the team record book.

UW-Whitewater’s 65-point margin of victory is the fourth-highest in school history and largest since 1996, when the team bested Rockford (Ill.) by 76 points.

UW-Whitewater Women’s Basketball Outlasted by No. 11 Trine

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women’s basketball team suffered its first loss away from home of the 2018-19 season Friday, falling 71-55 against No. 11 Trine (Ind.) in a non-conference contest on the first day of the Pat Deacon Classic at Transylvania University in Lexington, Ky.

With the loss, the Warhawks (6-4 overall) will face Methodist (N.C.) in Saturday’s consolation final at 3 p.m. Central Time.

Trine (10-1) outscored UW-Whitewater 47-24 in the first half after the Warhawks led 31-24 at halftime. The Thunder held a 40-12 advantage on points in the paint.

our 3-pointers. Sophomore guard Adriana Green hit three 3-pointers on her way to an 11-point outing.

Second-Half Surge Helps Warhawk Men Move to 10-0

he No. 10 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men’s basketball team erased a deficit in the second half and continued to extend its lead in a 79-59 victory over Sul Ross State (Texas) in a non-conference affair at Concordia University in Austin, Texas.

Trailing 48-43 with 14:13 on the clock in the second half, the Warhawks (10-0) posted a 13-0 run, highlighted by back-to-back 3-pointers from senior guard Dalton Menke, and never led by fewer than nine the rest of the way.

Menke tallied a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds to lead UW-Whitewater. Senior guard Malik Clements posted 15 points, seven rebounds and two steals, while senior guard David Sachs registered 12 points and five assists.

Senior forward Derek Rongstad recorded 11 points, five rebounds and two steals, and junior guard Tywon Bressler chipped in with nine points and three rebounds.

The Warhawks conclude their trip to Austin Saturday at 7 p.m. against host Concordia Texas.

Whitewater Chamber of Commerce seeks information on events to occur in 2019

The Whitewater Area Chamber of commerce has started the process to assemble the 2019 Whitewater Area Chamber of Commerce book.

She enlists the help of mom’s old friends (Christine Baranski, Julie Walters), as well as her three “dads” (Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgard), to learn more about her mother’s story…told in flashback! Along for the ride is Sophie’s estranged grandmother—-played by Cher… We will be showing the Sing-along version, ABBA fans!

Amanda Sears, S & R Egg Farm donate eggs to Friends of Lakeland School, Whitewater Food Pantry

Amanda donated 2 cases for the third year in a row to the “Friends of Lakeland School” (“FOLS”) local charity for their “Waffles with Santa” 16th annual fundraiser breakfast at the Walworth County special education school held on Dec. 8, 2018 in Elkhorn.

Kian is a graduate of Lakeland School, and Amanda’s son Logan currently is a student. 1300 Waffles were made in 4 hours.

Amanda and S & R Egg Farm family love to support their community and donated an additional case of 30 dozen eggs to the Whitewater Food Pantry where Kian works.


The Lakeland School Choir entertaining at the “Waffles with Santa” breakfast with Elizabeth (Libby) McComb conducting.  Libby is a graduate of Whitewater HS, and the music teacher at Lakeland School.

The diners enjoyed a gourmet egg and butter Belgian waffle and sausage breakfast, good music, and good company.  

Michael James Kienbaum, 29, Whitewater passed away at his home on Saturday, December 22, 2018.

Michael was born on October 26, 1989 in Janesville, WI to James and Jodeen (Stone) Kienbaum. He graduated from Whitewater High School in 2008. Michael and his father drove as a team as over the road truck drivers. Michael was a big Packer fan and enjoyed 4-wheeling, snowmobiling, and riding his motorcycle.

He is survived by his parents; sister, Brittany (fiancé Blake Zimmerman) Kienbaum, Whitewater; grandparents, Gary and Janet Stone, Whitewater; many cousins, aunts and uncles and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Harold and Marilyn Kienbaum.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, December 27, 2018 at 11:00am at First English Lutheran Church 401 W. Main St. Whitewater, WI 53190. Burial will follow at Richmond Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Thursday at the church from 9:00am until the time of the service. Michael will be deeply missed by all who knew him. We all love you.

Wayne Russell Wilson, 69, Whitewater, passed away on Tuesday, December 25, 2018 at his home.

Wayne was born on August 22, 1949 in Wisconsin Rapids to Russell and Lynette (Zuege) Wilson. He graduated from Lincoln High School in Wisconsin Rapids in 1967. After high school Wayne attended barber training at Madison Area Technical College. Wayne married Karleen Ironside in Wisconsin Rapids on August 3, 1968. They moved to Whitewater where Wayne owned and operated Wayne’s Hair Emporium and worked for 20 years for Hawthorne Melody. He and Karleen enjoyed making maple syrup for many years with their family. He also enjoyed golfing, camping and fishing.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years Karleen; children Shane (Ericka) Wilson, Gays Mills, WI, Amy Wilson, Goose Creek, SC; grandchildren Trevor (T’Naya) Wilson, Brody, Carter and Paige Wilson; great-grandchildren Trevor Jr. and Troy Wilson; sister Judy Nelson, Wisconsin Rapids, WI. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Graveside Services will be held in the spring of 2019 at the Forest Hills Cemetery in Wisconsin Rapids, WI.
