No. 3 UW-Whitewater Football Pulls Away at No. 8 Salisbury

Box Score: https://uwwsports.com/sports/football/stats/2021/salisbury/boxscore/15408

The No. 3 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater football team took advantage of big plays at opportune moments Saturday in a 31-14 victory at eighth-ranked Salisbury (Md.) in a match-up of nationally ranked non-conference foes.

The Warhawks (2-0 overall) scored 17 unanswered points in a 10-minute span over the third and fourth quarters to take control of a close contest.

Quarterback Max Meylor finished 16-of-23 for 227 yards and four touchdowns. Wide receiver Ryan Wisniewski caught five passes for 129 yards and two scores, and wide receiver Tyler Holte totaled five receptions for 54 yards and one touchdown.

Running back Alex Peete rushed 18 times for 86 yards and caught a 10-yard touchdown pass.

Defensive back Jaden Hendrickson paced the defense with six tackles. Defensive lineman Mackenzie Balanganayi posted five tackles, including one sack, and forced one fumble, and defensive back Kyle Koelblinger collected five tackles and one pass breakup.

UW-Whitewater held the ball for more than 33 minutes during the game to limit the Sea Gulls’ potent triple-option offensive attack. The Warhawk defense held Salisbury to 2-of-10 on third down and registered four sacks.

After a fourth-down running play inside the UW-W 15-yard line was stopped for no gain by Balanganayi and linebacker Julian McPhail, the Warhawks drove 88 yards in 12 plays for the first score of the game. Keyed by a 29-yard run by wide receiver Sam DeLany, Meylor hit Holte on third down for a 12-yard touchdown to give UW-Whitewater the lead with 6:58 left in the second quarter.

Following a punt by Salisbury (1-1), Meylor hit a wide-open Wisniewski on the first play of the ensuing drive for a 70-yard touchdown to make it 14-0 with just over two minutes remaining in the first half.

The Warhawks took the ball to start the second half, but were forced to punt. The Sea Gulls found the end zone in five plays to cut the UW-W lead in half with 8:54 to play in the third quarter.

UW-Whitewater responded by converting three third downs during a nine-play, 65-yard drive, including a 34-yard touchdown from Meylor to Wisniewski on third-and-18 to put the Warhawks ahead 21-7 at the 2:42 mark of the period.

UW-W tacked on 10 more points thanks to Meylor’s 10-yard touchdown pass to Peete 20 seconds into the fourth quarter and a 36-yard field goal by kicker Kacper Lupa following an interception on the previous drive by linebacker Shane McGrail.

Salisbury scored on a fumble return to account for the final margin.

Volleyball Opens RVC Play with Win Over Jefferson

On Thursday night, September 9, the Whitewater Whippet Volleyball Program kicked off Rock Valley Conference play with an all level sweep over Jefferson. The JV2, JV, and Varsity teams all beat the Eagles, while recognizing and celebrating their support system at home, during Parents’ Night. The auxiliary gym and main were full of cheering parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, friends, and other Whippet student-athletes. It was so nice to see the bleachers full with spectators after having limited spectators last year.

Avery Hintz

Whitewater won the first set 25-16 and came out strong in the second set, led by Avery Hintz. Behind Hintz’s strong serving, the Whippets were able to go on a 6 point run and take the second set 25-11. In the third set, the Whippets once again were sparked by Avery’s strong serve and the terminating ability of Kindyl Kilar. Behind the solid defensive play of Caleigh Yang, Avery Hintz, and Cali Kopecky, Whitewater worked to better the ball each play and take the third set 25-19.

The Whippets are on the road next week for two more conference matches against Turner and Clinton. After Friday night’s practice, the Whippets are looking forward to heading to the Whippet Booster Cookout, then to the Whippet football game to cheer on the team as they will be playing on the new turf! Exciting times for Whippet athletics!

WHS Football Team Hopes to Rebound from Loss, Makes Plans to Celebrate Grand Re-Opening of Home Field

The Whippet football team played a tough game against undefeated defending conference champs, Monroe, last week on September 3, losing 42-0. Monroe was able to take advantage of some early Whitewater mistakes and jumped out to a quick lead that Whitewater just couldn’t come back from. Although they played much better in the second half, the Whippets look to improve following a tough loss.

This week is a BIG week for Whippet Football as we will have the Grand Re-Opening of the new turf athletic stadium on Friday, September 10. It will be a night celebrating the past, present, and future Whippets as we will be honoring the 1980 State Champion WHS Football Team as well as it also being Youth Night. Stop by the annual Booster Club Tailgate/Cookout for a great meal as well beginning at 5:00 p.m.! It’s going to be a great night as the Whippets take on the Crusaders from Madison Edgewood!

Five Former UW-W Athletes Win Paralympic Gold in Wheelchair Basketball

Per the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, September 5:

“USA Basketball domination in Tokyo continued into September.

Mere weeks after the U.S. men and women won basketball gold medals at the Tokyo Olympics, the men’s wheelchair team also laid claim to gold with a 64-60 win over host Japan on the final day of Paralympic competition Sept. 4.

It’s the second straight Olympics in which the men’s team secured a gold medal.

Four members of the 12-athlete team hail Wisconsin, including Milton native John BoieNate Hinze of Cedar Grove, Matt Lesperance of Coleman (now living in Sun Prairie) and Jake Williams of Milwaukee. All four came up through the powerful Wisconsin-Whitewater wheelchair basketball program.

A fifth, Matt Scott, hails from Detroit but also competed at Wisconsin-Whitewater.”

The No. 4 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater football team tallied 41 first-half points Saturday afternoon on its way to a 46-7 victory against Carthage in a non-conference contest at Perkins Stadium, the team’s first game in more than 21 months.

The Warhawks (1-0 overall) rolled up 478 yards of total offense and held the Firebirds to 111 yards, including 24 rushing yards on 36 attempts.

Running back Alex Peete totaled nine carries for 54 yards and four touchdowns, including a 35-yarder to start the scoring just over four minutes into the game. His four scores tied a program record, which he also tied in 2018 at Dubuque.

Quarterback Max Meylor finished 12-of-16 through the air with two touchdowns, including a 47-yarder to wide receiver Tyler Holte midway through the first quarter and an 45-yarder to tight end Michael Berentes with just over a minute left in the second.

Linebacker Hawk Heffner paced a balanced defensive effort with six tackles. Defensive lineman Mackenzie Balanganayi registered four stops, including one sack and 1.5 tackles for loss. Linebacker Shane McGrail also recorded four tackles and one sack, which was a safety early in the third quarter to put UW-W ahead 43-0.

Peete scored on three 1-yard runs at the 11:12, 8:35 and 2:08 marks of the second quarter on his way to tying his school record.

Kicker Matt Maldonado knocked a 30-yard field goal through the uprights with 42 seconds to play in the third quarter following a 29-yard punt return by Dain Hudson.

The Warhawks’ defense held Carthage (0-1) without a score until the final two minutes of the contest.

Holte finished with three receptions for 94 yards and his touchdown, and wide receiver Derek Kumerow caught four passes for 83 yards, including a highlight-reel catch in good coverage down the left sideline early in the second half.

Running backs Ryan Ponick, Jaylon Edmonson and Preston Strasburg each ran for 25 yards or more.

Lucy Troxel and Sami Van Daele competed together side by side to place 87th and 88th, respectively. The Girls’ Varsity placed 7th out of 8 complete teams, and the JV did not have a complete team to score.

On the boys’ side, freshman Jack Hefty made his mark in the high school scene by placing 9th overall in a time of 17:33 and earning a medal. Cooper Hammond was 37th overall, with teammates CJ Tomomitsu and Nate Holden 55th and 56th overall. Miles Nickelsburg placed 89th, and Ben McCulloch finished in 93rd.
