The Whippet Wrestling Team wrestled very well on a night
that saw them honor the senior wrestlers as well as the youth wrestlers in the
Whitewater Wrestling Club.
The evening started off with the young Whippet Wrestlers
showing their skills as they had the opportunity to practice in the Whitewater
High School gym. Coach Gomez, Coach DePorter, and Coach Hernandez ran the young
team through many drills that they have been learning throughout the course of
the last month of the season. It was a great display of the knowledge, and more
importantly, the fun the young Whippets have had.
Before the high school dual the senior wrestlers were
presented and honored for their time they have given to the program. The time in
the program ranges from Jaden Salmieri who started wrestling in 1st grade to
Morgan Stillwagon who came out for the first time this year. Seniors included
Cody Gamble, Morgan Stillwagon, Jaden Salmieri, Tyler Pavlik, Mason West,
Gehrig Monday, Will Leibbrand, Zach Porter, and Victor Hernandez. Senior
Managers included Lexi Hackney, Kathleen Lashley, and Raquel Ortiz. Thank you
to these seniors for their time in the Whippet Wrestling Program.
The night concluded with the Varsity team getting a big victory against Edgerton 64-16. Edgerton was short handed a couple wrestlers based on some injuries; however, the Whippets wrestled extremely well in the big victory. All four seniors on the starting lineup closed out their career under the spotlight with a win by pin. Marcus DePorter wrestled a very good match to get the team started with a 13-4 major decision against a very tough opponent.
Once again, thank you seniors for your time. Also thank
you to Mike Krahn for taking the lead in creating the banners that were on
display for the night and hang in the wrestling room. Also thank you to Shannon
Cushman for taking charge of creating the trading cards that the high school
team handed out to the youth wrestlers at the end of the meet. The team started
this tradition last season, and the youth wrestlers love going down on the mat
after the competition and meeting the high school wrestlers to get trading
cards.
The team closes out the regular season dual meets on Tuesday when they travel to Janesville Craig to participate in a dual meet. The team is currently 8-2 overall and 6-2 in conference competition. On February 8, the team will host the Rock Valley Conference Tournament at Whitewater High School. Wrestling begins at 9:45 a.m.

WHS beat Big Foot in Boys’ Basketball on Friday, January
24, by a score of 46-41. The Whippets were led by Jake Martin and Brock
Grosinske with 11 each, followed by Carter Brown with 10.
WHS is tied with Jefferson for 6th place in the 10-team Rock Valley Conference with a 4-6 record. Next up is a non-conference game at Milton on Monday, January 27, followed by conference game at Evansville on Thursday, January 30.
On Saturday, 1/25 the Whippet Wrestlers were up bright and early to compete in the Monroe Invitational. This was an 11 team tournament that had some extremely tough weight classes, as many tough teams from Southwest Wisconsin participated.
The day was definitely a roller coaster for the team.
They started off wrestling very well, winning 9 of the first 13 matches
contested, putting 9 guys into the semi-finals. The next round did not go in
our favor as we ended up losing 7 of the 9 semi-final matches. Marcus DePorter
and Carter Friend wrestled very well against their opponents. Marcus got a pin,
and Carter picked up a 17-5 victory, to punch their tickets to the finals.
During the break the team was told those in the
Consolation Bracket needed to come back and wrestle tough to put themselves
into a position to get into the top 3. At this time the team was in 4th place,
40 points out of first place. Coming back from the break the team had a great
round, losing only 3 of the 9 matches, thus putting 6 in the bronze medal match.
This huge round pushed the Whippets into first place going into the final round
of the tournament.
As stated it was a roller coaster day, and unfortunately,
the Whippets dropped too many last round matches. When the dust settled, Monroe
claimed first in their own tournament with 191 to Whitewater’s 173.5 and a
runner up finish for the Whippets.
Coming home with medals for the Whippets were Marcus DePorter and Carter Friend each taking 2nd place, and with the bronze medal were Dylan DuClos and Gehrig Monday. Just missing out on the bronze medal and taking 4th were CJ Tomomitsu, Cooper Hammond, Brian Porcaro, Jaden Salmieri, David Cushman, Denver Isbell, and Will Leibbrand.
The Whippets are home on Tuesday night when they host the
Tide of Edgerton. This is the last dual meet of the year at home for
Whitewater. The seniors on the team will be recognized, and the youth wrestlers
will have a short practice before the varsity competition. Wrestling will begin
with JV at 6 and Varsity at 7.
