All the proceeds from the event will be contributed to projects in the local community, including a positive messaging campaign at Whitewater High School, support to the Whitewater Food Pantry and the

UW-W Campus Food Pantry, a hydroponics project at a school in Milwaukee, support to the Whitewater Unified School District Family Emergency Fund, and other youth projects sponsored by the two Optimist clubs.

Trivia teams will consist of eight members for $150; you may add two more members for an additional $25 each.  The night will offer ten rounds of trivia, individual trivia, silent auction and bucket raffle, costume contest, cash drawings, prize wheel, and lots of entertainment. The two top trivia teams will be awarded a prize at the end of the night, and other prizes will be given out throughout the event. There will be many ways to win prizes, including for best costume, most spirit, and funniest answers.

We invite community members to form teams, donate to the silent auction/bucket raffle, and to consider serving as a sponsor.  Checks may be written to the Optimist International Foundation and are tax deductible.

We will release a complete list of our sponsors at a later date.  If you are interested in participating, visit our web site or contact Kim Adams.  Donations and registration forms can be sent to the UW-Whitewater/ Community Optimist Club, P.O. Box 571, Whitewater, WI, 53190.

The Polar Plunge returns to Whitewater!

Hundreds of Special Olympics Wisconsin supporters from across Whitewater and beyond will be “Freezin’ for a Reason” as they plunge into icy water to raise funds for SOWI athletes on February 9, 2019 at Cravath Park beginning at 12:00 p.m.

The Whitewater Polar Plunge is one of 12 Polar Plunges that take place in cities across Wisconsin in 2019. Money raised in this unique winter tradition helps SOWI athletes compete in games at the state, national and even international level, in addition to helping with health and wellness programs that enrich the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities year-round. Last year in Whitewater, 260 plungers raised $59,000 for SOWI athletes. Statewide, more than 6,000 brave and generous participants brought in more than $1.5 million.

“The Polar Plunge is our signature event and an excellent way to give back to your community. It’s a fun experience that offers so much more than jumping into frigid waters,” said Caitlin Fitzpatrick, Director of Special Events for the region. “Since partnering with the City of Whitewater and ‘Freeze Fest’ the event can be enjoyed by all ages, even if you don’t want to plunge. Taste some award winning chili at the Chili Cook Off, catch a ride with the Snow Dogs, warm up by the fire pit, volunteer for the day or raise money for Special Olympics Wisconsin by being ‘Too Chicken to Plunge.’”

Plungers who raise the minimum $75 will receive the official Polar Plunge long-sleeve shirt. Those raising more can earn additional items such as towels, sweatshirts, jackets, etc. Many plungers go far beyond the minimum $75 donations too. If a team raises $2,500 or more they even earn a team pizza party courtesy of The Brat Stop.

Although most participants plunge with friends, with a team of coworkers as part of the “Toss your Boss,” on a student team for “Cool Schools,” or solo, the Polar Plunge is for everyone. Individuals who want to support the cause but would rather stay warm and on dry land can register as “Too Chicken to Plunge.” Even for those not plunging, it’s worth it to check out this fun and truly unique atmosphere that brings the community together for a worthwhile cause.

Registration is open at PlungeWI.org. For more information about Special Olympics Wisconsin, visit SpecialOlympicsWisconsin.org.

The Whitewater Polar Plunge is lucky to have great support from the community including the City of Whitewater, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, Toppers Pizza, Aqua Fun Pools & Spas, and The Waterman.

Special Olympics Wisconsin is proud to partner with Kwik Trip, Walgreens and the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics.

Ferradermis hosts Open House on February 9

Ferradermis, the WHS robotics team, welcomes our sponsors and community members to our open house on Saturday, February 9, from 10:00 until 2:00, at Whitewater High School. Visitors should enter through Door #38 on the northwest corner of the building behind the auditorium and before the auto shop. Most of our team leaders will be attending the Model United Nations conference that weekend, so this will be a great opportunity for our younger members to step up and represent the team. Come check out our workspace and see what the CAD team, programmers, mechanical team, electrical team, competition logistics team, and business team have been up to as they prepare for their March competitions in Duluth and Milwaukee. The team is building two identical robots this year; the competition bot must be sealed in plastic by 11 pm on Tuesday, February 19, but the team can continue to conduct drive practice and make programming improvements using the second bot.

Community members currently have the opportunity to support Ferradermis by purchasing raffle tickets for the Wisconsin FIRST Raffle. Tickets are available from any team member or at First Citizens State Bank in downtown Whitewater for $3 each or 4 tickets for $10. The grand prize in the raffle is $1000, second place is large screen TV, and third place is a laptop.

Youth Wrestlers Meet Their High School Wrestlers

On Thursday night the youth wrestlers of Whitewater had the opportunity to have a short practice on the varsity mat prior to the varsity competing against Clinton. It provided the young wrestlers the chance to show off to the fans what they have been learning so far in their season.  During the varsity competition the team appreciated the excitement the young wrestlers brought to the stands. After the dual meet the high school team had a meet and greet of the youth and gave out a trading card of themselves for the youth to have to remember the night.

It was an enjoyable experience not only by the youth but the high school wrestlers also stated it was a lot of fun meeting the young wrestlers.
