Happy Labor Day

Labor Day is a federal holiday in the United States celebrated on the first Monday in September to honor and recognize the American labor movement and the works and contributions of laborers to the development and achievements of the United States. The three-day weekend it falls on is called Labor Day Weekend.

Beginning in the late 19th century, as the trade union and labor movements grew, trade unionists proposed that a day be set aside to celebrate labor. “Labor Day” was promoted by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor, which organized the first parade in New York City. In 1887, Oregon was the first state of the United States to make it an official public holiday. By the time it became an official federal holiday in 1894, thirty states in the U.S. officially celebrated Labor Day.

Canada’s Labour Day is also celebrated on the first Monday of September. More than 80 countries celebrate International Workers’ Day on May 1, the ancient European holiday of May Day. May Day was chosen by the Second International of socialist and communist parties to commemorate the Haymarket affair, which occurred in Chicago on May 4, 1886.

Warhawks Open Football Season vs. St. John’s on Sat., 9/3

“St. John’s University football hopes to start strong against playoff rival Whitewater” is the headline in the SC [St. Cloud] Times article about the Warhawks’ away game on Saturday, September 3rd.

Quoting from the article, “It was Mark Twain who once said ‘if it’s your job to eat two frogs, it’s best to eat the biggest one first.’ The Johnnies find themselves facing a hefty tadpole as they host the University of Wisconsin Whitewater for their season opener Saturday at Clemens Stadium.

Whitewater is ranked fourth in the D3football.com preseason poll. St. John’s is No. 5. The Johnnies won 42-18 in 2002, the only other regular season matchup between the two teams. Since then, Whitewater has hosted St. John’s four times in the playoffs, winning all four games.

In 2021, St. John’s went 11-1 overall, winning their 35th conference title and seventh consecutive trip to the NCAA Division III playoffs. Their season ended Nov. 27 with a 31-28 loss to Linfield at Clemens stadium in the second round.”

Here’s the view on the game from UW-W’s website:

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater football team opens the 2022 campaign this Saturday, September 3, at Saint John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at Clemens Stadium.

The Warhawks enter the season after advancing to a national semifinal game in 2021 and capturing the program’s 38th Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title. Head Coach Kevin Bullis, a three-time WIAC Coach of the Year, led the 2021 squad to a 13-1 record. He enters his eighth year at the helm.

UW-Whitewater is a consensus fourth nationally in three preseason polls including d3football.com, College Football America, and Lindy’s Sports.

The Johnnies, a member of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, are ranked among the top 15 in the three polls with their highest mark, fifth, in the d3football.com release. SJU won a record 35th MIAC title last season.

ON THE AIR

Saturday’s game will air live online on Saint John’s streaming portal. The contest can also be heard on 105.9 FM The Hog in the Whitewater area, or online at www.1059thehog.com.

SERIES

This is the sixth meeting between the Warhawks and Johnnies. UW-Whitewater leads the all-time series 4-1. SJU won the first game of the series on their home field, 42-18 in 2002. The Warhawks rattled off the next four at Perkins Stadium winning 34-7 in 2005, 17-14 in 2006, 37-7 in 2008, and 35-32 in 2019.

NOTABLE

  • UW-Whitewater has been unbeaten in its non-conference slate three consecutive seasons. UW-W’s most recent regular season, non-conference loss at Perkins Stadium came against Buffalo State in 2012.
  • Since the start of the 2004 season, UW-Whitewater is 49-4 in regular season non-conference games, good for a .923 winning percentage. Two of those losses came during the 2017 season and another came against Division II St. Cloud State (2007).

Whitewater Waterway Clean-Up – Sat., Sept. 17

Five marine biology UW-W grads submitted this photo in 2020 after they noticed trash along the bank of the recently drained Cravath Lake and decided to spend part of their mini-reunion day doing some cleanup. The story may be read here.

The City of Whitewater – Department of Public Works would like to
announce an event sponsored by Protect Wisconsin Waterways. This event will be held at Cravath Lakefront
Park (341 S. Fremont St.) on Saturday, September 17, 2022, from 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. Protect Wisconsin
Waterways wants you to learn the impact of stormwater on our waterways.

Residents of Whitewater (a member of the Rock River Stormwater Group) are encouraged to take an active
role to help better their community by joining the annual clean-up of the Rock River and its tributaries. This
event is part of the Protect Wisconsin Waterways campaign to spread awareness of what individuals can do to
help protect their local lakes and rivers.

Protect Wisconsin Waterways has run this event since 2016, and each year the total effort can remove over
fifty bags of trash and litter from and around our lakes and rivers. Objects as small as cans, bottles, and
wrappers, as well as large tires, traffic cones, and PVC pipes, have been removed from our local waterways.
Our waterways are home not only to a bounty of wildlife, but are also the place where we fish, boat, kayak, and
swim.

Discover how you can help protect Wisconsin’s waterway around us and make it an even more enjoyable place
for everyone. More information can be found at https://protectwiwaterways.org/2022cleanup/. Please help us
keep our local waterways clean! Also, like us on Facebook at Protect Wisconsin Waterways.

Our Readers Share: Steve Watson – A Colorless “Rainbow”

Steve Watson writes, “August 9 on my daily saunter, I noticed this rainbow with no color. I sent the photo to Mark Baden, channel 12 weather man.  He replied it’s a fogbow.  The droplets of water are too small to refract the light. He also pointed out that the halo around the shadow of my head is called heiligenschein.”

fogbowa nebulous arc or circle of white or yellowish light sometimes seen in fog [Merriam-webster.com]

heiligenscheina bright light around the shadow of a person’s head (as on a field or lawn) caused by diffraction and reflection of sunlight by dewdrops [Merriam-webster.com]

Our thanks to Steve Watson for sharing this fascinating photo.
