WHS Girls Swim Team: SLC Conference Relays – 6th place

From Coach Gina Foucault:

A great first meet for the 2018 Girls Swim season! Bringing home the medals for our team were Junior Brianna Zimdars and Sophomores Sophia Fanshaw, Ella Houwers and Amber Krebs. These girls combined to win four 1st place finishes – 4×100 IM Relay, 1000 Freestyle Crescendo Relay, 500 Freestyle Crescendo Relay and the 4×100 Backstroke Relay. In the 4×100 IM relay the girls finished 11 seconds in front of all the other relays. The 1000 Freestyle was another outstanding race with our girls beating the field by 27 seconds! Ella Houwers rocked the unusual 300 yard distance with a 3:07 split! The 500 Crescendo was a little more competitive, but their experience and year round training showed with the girls coming out on top. All four girls had nice splits on the 500 Crescendo Relay. In the 4×100 Backstroke relay the girls were able to put in solid times and beat the entire field by 7 seconds.

In addition to our medal winning relays, the entire Conference Relay team impressed with many times faster than their end of season times from last year. In our first race of the day Maddie Elworthy, Lizbeth Rodriguez, Lexi Hackney and Morgan Radaj raced hard winning the first heat by 7 seconds and beat 2 teams in the 2nd heat to finish in 7th place. Morgan Radaj finished the relay with a 26.91 in the 50 Freestyle anchor spot. These 4 swimmers combined again to swim the second event, the 200 Freestyle Relay. Maddie, Lexi, Lizbeth and Morgan combined four nice splits to break 2:00 minutes. Lydia Bols, Caroline Crowley, Ellie Treder and Mina Truesdale combined to swim the 4×100 IM Relay with great results. These four will definitely be counted on during the season as they are able to legally swim all four competitive strokes and are willing to race hard. Whitewater was the only school to enter a “B” or second relay in the 1000 Crescendo Relay. Lydia Bols, Raquel Ortiz, Brianna Staebler and Ellie Treder were willing to take on the long race and did an outstanding job racing. Brianna Staebler lost her goggles early in the race and did a good job finishing her 300 yards without them. It’s nice to have so many girls willing to take on the longer distances for our team. Our 200 Butterfly Relay team of Caroline Crowley, Brianna Staebler, Raquel Ortiz and Lexi Hackney finished in 7th place earning good points for our team. I am super excited to see how much these girls will improve this year. Our 500 Freestyle Crescendo Relay with Katya Morales, Mikael Schmit, Sarah Morales and Caroline Crowley took on the other long race and did well. Lydia Bols, Caroline Crowley, Mina Truesdale and Lizbeth Rodriguez combined to swim the 4×100 Breaststroke Relay with each starting the year off with very nice times. Mina posted a faster time than any of her times from last year! Rounding out our relays was the 400 Freestyle Relay of Lizbeth Rodriguez, Lexi Hackney, Maddie Elworthy and Morgan Radaj finishing in 8th place overall. All four posted great 1st meet times including a lifetime best from Morgan Radaj with a 1:00.39.

It was a great first meet for the girls and I can’t wait to see the whole team in action!

WHS soccer takes opening match vs Fort Atkinson

[text-blocks id=”1613″ slug=”1613″]

From Coach John Chenoweth:

The Whitewater Boys Soccer team opened their season with a non-conference game at Fort Atkinson. The game was a good early test against a solid team and a game that presented a lot of ups and downs and an exciting finish.

The Whippets got on the board early with a goal from Juan Cuellar in the first 5 minutes. Just a few minutes later, Juan found the back of the net again and the Whippets were up 2-0. Fort Atkinson then started to lock in their defense and midfield and the rest of the half was scoreless.

It wasn’t until midway through the second half that another goal was scored with Fort Atkinson getting on the board on a shot that squeezed under our keeper. In the 83rd minute, the Whippets were called for a penalty in the box. Our keeper, Sergio Zuniga, made a great save on the PK, pushing the ball wide of the goal, but in the scramble for the ball, we were called for another penalty. Fort put the second PK in the goal and the game was tied. With time winding down our center back, David Krumholz drove a ball from our goal box past midfield. Juan Cuellar beat the defenders and the keeper to earn the game-winning goal, and a hat-trick, with 4 seconds left on the clock.

We were happy to walk away with the win to open our season. The game helped us see some of our strengths and our opportunities for improvement; but, generally, we were pleased with how we played the first game. Unfortunately, we also take a big loss as one of our captains, senior center back Max O’Brien, suffered a break that ends his season.

The team wishes Max a speedy recovery and a BIG Thank You to all of our fans that came out for the opener. We’ll be back in action Tuesday, Aug. 28, at home against 2017 State Championship Runner-up Delavan-Darien.

Former UWW standout making a statement with the Packers

One week after hauling in a 52-yard touchdown pass, former UWW wide receiver Jake Kumerow took another step in his bid to make the Packers’ 53-man roster with an 82-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter of Thursday night’s 51-34 win over Pittsburgh.

Remembrance Ceremony for Whitewater K-9 Officer Ruso

A remembrance ceremony will be held Thursday, August 23 at 6:30 pm for Whitewater Police Department K-9 Officer, Ruso. A Pagoda Dogwood tree has been planted in Ruso’s honor. The tree and a memorial placard will be revealed at the ceremony and are placed in the Ray Trost Nature Preserve located off North Fremont Street. Ray Trost was a Whitewater Officer from 1991 to 2010. The preserve was created in Ray’s honor after his passing in 2010. The Whitewater Police Department and Trost family felt it was a fitting location to also celebrate the life of K-9 Officer, Ruso.

City Manager, Cameron Clapper; Chief of Police, Aaron Raap; and Ruso’s handler, Justin Stuppy will be in attendance. The ceremony is open to the public to remember and celebrate Ruso. Ruso developed a kidney issue and underwent a very common surgery but sadly, his kidneys did not perform as expected. Ruso passed away July 27, just over a year of being sworn in on June 6, 2017.

Ruso was a high energy, 3-year-old Labrador retriever from Mexico. He graduated from Little Rock K-9 Academy after months of training and excelled in drug searches.

Ruso will be greatly missed by the Whitewater Police Department, city staff, and the Whitewater community.

Whitewater group travels to Norway and Russia

Bergen (Norway) was the starting point and the finish for these Whitewater residents (some formerly) including Chris Nelson, Mary Salverson, Jim & Dana Schroeder, Jerry & Nancy Wendt, and Caroline & Mary Wieman. We had just finished the 12-day, 2,600 mile round trip from Bergen to Russia and back that included 66 stops at various Norwegian towns along the way. Our ship on the Hurtigruten Line carried cars, general cargo, and 500 passengers.

The Wendts are now planning their 2019 trip from Paris to Norway. The 14-day trip will include a full day at the D-Day beaches and cemetery. The dates are Sept. 10 – 24, 2019. There is still some limited availability. All are welcome. Call the Wendts at 262-473-8400 for information.

WHS Football: Beloit Turner 56 Whitewater 7

From maxpreps.com:

Whitewater had to hit the road for their first game, and unfortunately, the road hit them back. They were given a punishing 7-56 loss at the hands of Turner. If Whitewater were hoping for some payback for the 13-49 loss against Turner the last time the two teams met, then they were disappointed. This was the first contest for both squads, starting Whitewater off on the wrong foot at 0 – 1, while giving Turner a 1-0 record.

Next week, Whitewater takes on East Troy at 7:00 PM.
