Every year the DWS is in conjunction with the Working for Whitewater’s Wellness (W3) Fit Kid Shuffle. During the Shuffle, children 10-years-old and younger were provided activities throughout the morning and a one-mile run. This year the Shuffle had more than 90 participants. This year was also a successful year for the Kids Korral; the DWS provided a free childcare to all its participants. The Kids Korral is staffed by background-checked volunteers from UW-W’s College of Education and Professional Studies and the student organization, Creative and Resourceful Educators.

The DWS was also joined by myTeam Triumph once again. There were 28 participants from the local running group, out of the 28 there were eight “captains” in wheelchairs for the half marathon.

This is the second year myTeam Triumph has participated in the DWS. The entire DWS was thrilled with their attendance and hope to grow the wheelchair division bigger next year.

The main goals of the DWS are to build a stronger community and showcase the City of Whitewater. All proceeds from the event are put directly back into the community each year. The five local non-profit partners are Bethel House, Whitewater LEADS, Working for Whitewater’s Wellness, Whitewater Unified School District and the J-Hawk Aquatics Club.

“The entire community comes together for this race and it is an honor to be part of it,” DWS Race Director Dawson Miller said. “Even those people that don’t run but walk or volunteer and helping a great cause.”

The DWS would like to thank everyone involved in making the sixth year a success. The Whitewater community is a great place to visit, live and work.

The DWS Planning Committee is starting on next year’s race; new editions and features for 2019 are in the works. Save the date for September 22, 2019. We hope everyone will join us!

WMS 7th graders celebrate Native American Day

Photos and Story by Joanne Kyle

Native American Day, an annual integrated enrichment event for 7th graders, was held on Tuesday, September 18 at Whitewater Middle School. Community members and area presenters were invited into our school and helped students learn about Native American culture and values. Students learned how Native American families are different and yet in other ways the same as their own families.

This year’s presenters included:

Mark Denning from Muskego – The head dancer and leader of the Oneida Dancers, Mark Denning has devoted himself to changing stereotypes of Native Americans. He spoke to the students about how culture and music are always interrelated and demonstrated the power of traditional dance to reflect native culture. Born in a small village on the Menominee Reservation in northern Wisconsin, Mark Denning has been a traditional Native American dancer since the age of 17. He also serves as director of Southeast Oneida Tribal Services.

Genevieve Ebert from Waukesha – Genevieve is a lifelong trapper and has the largest collection of fur-bearing wild animals in the state of Wisconsin. Students were allowed a hands-on opportunity to check out the huge variety of animals as they listened to interesting stories about her hunting and trapping experiences.

Terry Ames from Elkhorn – Terry shared his knowledge of flintknapping and demonstrated how to make arrowheads and other primitive tools out of stone. Students learned how to hunt for old arrowheads when out walking in nature and of their importance and value.

Robin Buckley from Fox Point – Robin is the Director/Owner at Hot4Lax Lacrosse specialty store located in Waukesha and a director/coach for many Southern WI youth lacrosse leagues. Lacrosse is sometimes referred to as the “original sport”. Students learned about the game of lacrosse and its Native American origins and purpose. They then had great fun learning techniques and playing the game which has few rules and no boundaries.

Marion and Ron Courtney from Cape Coral, FL – This couple traveled a long distance to help our students learn and understand about fashion on the prairie. Dressed in native “dress” clothing, students learned how that differed from “work” clothing and how the clothing was simply stitched and held together from animal hides. Students learned about the accessories that were necessary to always be carried with them. A classroom was transformed to replicate the inside of a teepee with buffalo skin rugs and willow chairs for students to relax on as they learned.

Bill Sydow from Whitewater – Bill Sydow is a former WMS 7th grade teacher that is now retired. He taught students about different types of Native American food dishes and students were able to taste test several of them including salmon, venison, wild boar, dried turkey, beans, wild rice,“three sister”soup, dried fruits and nuts/seeds, fry bread, corn bread, and maple syrup. A special thank you goes out to Rochelle Ahrens (another retired WMS 7th grade teacher) for helping Bill, and also to Cathy Luebke, Lorie Radke, and Marge Watson (all retired WUSD food service workers) for helping to make the fry bread.

A BIG THANK-YOU to the Middle School PTO for a generous donation to help make this event happen! We are grateful!

WHS Football takes down Evansville, 22-21

[text-blocks id=”1611″ slug=”bob-mischka”]

The Whippets beat Evansville to notch their first win of the season. It was an exciting “come from behind” win, 22-21.

Evansville was called with a defensive face-mask penalty on the last play of regulation time. This gave Whitewater an extra play with the ball on the Evansville 6 yard line. Dylan Pease hit Julio Espinoza with a pass in the end zone for the 1-point win.

WHS Cross Country teams compete at the Midwest Invitational

[text-blocks id=”1611″ slug=”bob-mischka”]

From Coach Carstens:

Both cross country programs participated in the 81st running of the Midwest Invitational hosted by Janesville Craig at Blackhawk Golf Course. Due to flooding this year a bridge was not able to be rebuilt in time for the races so the course was a 3 looped affair that made for a unique experience yet fast race times. In some ways, this was a true test of mental toughness having to run the 1-mile loop 3 times with potential for lap traffic and little variation to keep the mind engaged. Over 3000 runners competed in 6 races; Varsity boys and girls, Freshmen/Sophomore and a Junior/Senior race. This meet is loaded with division 1 programs and ranked teams in the state from all divisions.

The boys’ varsity program finished 35th out of 45 participating teams in the varsity race. Trenten Zahn led the team with a finish time of 17:06 and Aidan was the team’s second runner in 17:58. They finished 78th and 153rd overall. Senior Nick Kuzoff was the team’s 3rd runner in 19:00 (234th), Manny Rodriguez in 19:13 (243rd) and Daniel Trost in 19:59 (258th).

The boys’ frosh/soph saw Will Hofmann and Cooper Hammond really run nicely together throughout and both looked really strong with Will getting the edge by the finish line in 18:54 and 18:56, respectively. Good enough for 84th and 86th place. Evan Schepp saw the race course for the first time this season and ran 21:38 (328th) as did Carson Ellenwood who stopped the clock in 23:19 (415th). Peter Zimdars helped the team score with his time of 22:10 and 357th place overall finish. Andrew Rollette enjoyed a great day as he ran a huge personal best in 27:27 (492nd). The team finished in 29th.

The jr/sr race saw Jaden Salmieri run arguably the best complete race of the day and almost broke 20 for the first time in 20:07. His effort today afforded him the opportunity to lead the team to a 28th place finish. Jack Mayer finished in 21:17 (245th), Wesley Salverson with a significant time drop as well in 21:53 (280th). Andy Vo and Mason West were able to find each other early in the huge field and pushed each other all the way to finish with Andy beating Mason to the line in a fun team battle in 22:16 and 22:19 (290th and (292nd). Justin Mitchell finished in 26:09 which was good enough for 347th place.

In the girls’ varsity race Nicole Tomomitsu was once again the top performer for the Whippets running a time of 21:39 good enough for 156th. Crystal Chan finished in 22:20 (195th), Hailey Prager in 22:50 (213th), Trinity Nickels in 25:32 (258th) and Jenna Lee in 26:08 (263rd). As a team, they finished in 37th.

The fr/so race features Sophie Walton as the top finisher for the Whippets in 292nd place with a time of 26:43 cutting over a minute off her previous best. Jenny Villarreal crushed her race and ran a near 2 minute personal best in 28:54 placing 365th and Nikole Pelot performed a similar time drop and finished in 31:04, good enough for 398th.

The jr/sr race featured two runners with Sophia Wagner dropping 2 ½ minutes off her previous best time in 31:58 and placing 287th and Rosie Aschenbrener with a 75 second time drop in 33:09 placing 292nd.

The next event for both programs will be the Jefferson Invite on Tuesday at Jefferson Golf Course followed by the Nightfall Classic Friday night in Wisconsin Dells.

WHS Boys Soccer ties two last week

[text-blocks id=”1611″ slug=”bob-mischka”]
From Coach Chenoweth:

The Whitewater Boys Soccer team played two games to a draw this week.  First up was Evansville, a team that we knew would be tough based on the past few years.  Each team kept pace with one another as Whitewater went up first, but for each goal the Whippets scored, Evansville was able to answer.  We managed goals from Manny Cortez, Christian Reyes, and David Kromholz.  Our center defensive mids of Danny Soto, Morgan Janovec and Ignacio Cuevas did a good job of being aware of their dangerous players while our outside mids Colin Chenoweth, Cody Rupke, and Manny Cortez worked well to help move the ball up the field while also tracking back defensively.

On Thursday, the Whippets traveled to Edgerton.  Edgerton had a game plan to get the ball into our half as quickly as possible on each possession.  They had a strong keeper who did not shy away from coming out of his goal box and was a really strong punter.  The Whippets started the game slower and more tentative than we would have liked.  While we didn’t score in either half, the second half was much more recognizable as the type of soccer we’d like to be playing the rest of the season.

The Whippets are now 4-4-3 overall and have one loss and two ties in conference play.  Up next for us is McFarland at home on Monday and Big Foot away on Thursday.
