City conducting smoke testing in sanitary sewer July 26 to July 30

Editor’s note: the following information has been supplied by the City of Whitewater.

The City of Whitewater Wastewater Utility will be conducting smoke testing in the sanitary sewer collection system beginning Monday, July 26, 2021, through Friday, July 30, 2021. In case of inclement weather, testing will continue into the following week, or until completed.

The general area affected by smoke testing will include the northeast portion of the City. The western
border will be George St., while the Clay St. and Rice St. extension will be the border to the south. A map of
this area can be found on the City’s website. The testing area is highlighted in yellow.

We appreciate your patience and understanding and will make every effort to minimize the inconvenience
or disruptions this project may have on residents and businesses. If you have any further questions or
concerns regarding smoke testing please call 262-473-0560, Monday through Thursday, 6:00 a.m. – 3:30
p.m. and Friday, 6:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.

Those affected should have received a letter with the following information.

Smoke testing is part of the sewer maintenance program in the City of Whitewater. Testing will begin the week of July 26, 2021. In case of inclement weather, testing will continue into the following week, or until completed.

Those affected will receive a letter the week of July 12, 2021. The general area affected by smoke testing will include the northeast portion of the City. The western border will be George St., while the Clay St. and Rice St. extension will be the border to the south. If you are a landlord please notify your tenants of smoke testing.

An important task of the testing will be to locate breaks and defects in the sewer system. Smoke testing consists of placing a blower on top of a sanitary sewer manhole and forcing “smoke” down into the sewer system. The smoke, under pressure from the blower, travels through the sewer system and escapes through any connection, crack, leak, etc., along the way.

During the test you may see smoke coming from vent stacks on buildings or from holes in the ground. Don’t be alarmed. The smoke used for this testing is non-toxic and non-hazardous and is manufactured specifically for this purpose. It leaves no residue or stains, and has no effect on plants or animals.

Smoke should not enter your home; however, if it does, please note the location of the smoke and notify a member of the smoke testing crew working in your area by practicing social distancing by maintaining a distance of at least 6 feet. This smoke could be an indication of a defect in your plumbing system. This defect could allow sewer gases to enter inside your home, which is a potential health hazard. Corrections of such defects on private property are the responsibility of the property owner, and a licensed plumber should be consulted to ensure the proper corrections are made.

Please perform the following tasks to reduce the ability for smoke to enter your home:

  • You do not need to be home, but you may want to leave a window slightly ajar to promote ventilation in your home.
  • Make sure all drain traps and plumbing fixtures have water in them. Therefore, fill drains (such as basement floor drains, unused sinks, etc.) with water by running the faucet for 30 to 60 seconds or filling the drain with approximately one gallon of water. This will fill the plumbing trap and prevent entry of smoke. Prepare drains as soon as you receive this smoke testing notice. This only needs to be done once before testing begins.

Please notify us before Thursday, July 22, 2021 if you have any of the following situations:

  • Individuals with respiratory problems and are unable to leave.
  • Elderly persons who will be alone and might be alarmed or confused if they see smoke.

UW-Whitewater to launch an online Master of Science in Marketing

(UW-Whitewater submission) Beginning spring 2022, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater will offer the first fully online Master of Science in Marketing in the University of Wisconsin System. Delivered by the College of Business and Economics, the program has been designed to help meet regional demand for professionals who can thrive in a dynamic digital ecosystem.

Digital transformation and data analytics are revolutionizing the discipline of marketing, and organizations need marketers who can guide their strategies and navigate change. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, careers related to marketing are expected to grow 7 to 18 percent by 2029, depending on the specific job function. Master’s degrees can help differentiate applicants for high-impact, high-paying positions.

“The Master of Science in Marketing has been developed on the foundation of UW-Whitewater’s proven success in online graduate education,” said Paul Ambrose, interim dean. “It fits within our growing portfolio of specialized master’s programs — which can be ideal for professionals looking to change careers or position themselves for advancement.”

The online M.S. in Marketing is a 30-credit program that emphasizes critical thinking and analysis of complex marketing problems, developing effective strategies and tactics appropriate to the environment, and leveraging consumer insights and artificial intelligence for digital marketing in a global context. Students can complete the program in about two years on a part-time basis.

The new master’s program builds on the MBA in Marketing and two stackable graduate certificates in marketing — Digital Marketing and Artificial Intelligence and Marketing Strategy.

“We launched the certificates in 2020 to give individuals interested in graduate-level marketing education more flexible degree options,” said Andrew Dahl, assistant professor of marketing. “Students now have the option of completing one of the certificates and later completing the M.S. in Marketing, or stacking the two marketing certificates together – plus a few other courses – to earn the master’s degree. This allows them to update their resume more quickly and provides additional opportunities for promotion.”

The UW-Whitewater College of Business and Economics is the largest AACSB-accredited business school in Wisconsin. Delivered through UW-Whitewater Online, the college’s online programs are consistently ranked among the best in the nation for quality, flexibility and value. All UW-Whitewater Online graduate programs are developed and delivered by Ph.D. faculty with assistance from experienced instructional designers and media specialists.

For more information on the new M.S. in Marketing, contact Jesica Schwarz at gradbus@uww.edu.

Business Organization Supports Half Marathon Growth

Editor’s note: the following information has been supplied by Knight Public Affairs.

Each year the community comes together for the Discover Whitewater Series (DWS): Half Marathon & 5K, with a dedication to a healthier Whitewater community and to support local charity organizations.

The Greater Whitewater Committee (GWC) got together with many organizations throughout the community to develop the DWS in 2013. For nine years the GWC has spearheaded the annual race and continues to support it through providing volunteers on race day.

Scheduled for Sunday, September 19, 2021, DWS participants will run through the City of Whitewater in both the half marathon and 5k courses.

“The course takes participants through the City of Whitewater, and we are able to have people from UW-W, the school district, the business community and the whole city volunteer,” GWC Chairman Larry Kachel said. “They continue to make the race a special one.”

GWC is a community organization made up of businesses with the goals to educate, advocate, and develop ideas that make Whitewater a destination choice to visit and live. More than 30 representatives from the community gather regularly to plan the DWS and ensure that a high quality, safe and challenging course is established for all participants.

Over the course of eight years, DWS has distributed more than $204,500 to five local charity partners — Bethel House (which provides interim housing for homeless families), Whitewater LEADS, Working for Whitewater’s Wellness (W3), Whitewater Unified School District and the J-Hawk Aquatic Club.

“Even after so many years of volunteering with the DWS, I’m thrilled to see the support the entire community brings year after year,” DWS Race Director Dawson Miller said. “A huge thank you goes out to the Greater Whitewater Committee.”

The DWS team looks forward to another year working alongside the community and to seeing all the participants on race day; register at https://runwhitewater.com. Register before September 5 to ensure you will receive a DWS t-shirt.

About the Greater Whitewater Committee

The Greater Whitewater Committee is an action-oriented group committed to working with citizens, elected officials and policy makers to identify, craft and implement a pro-business agenda. The agenda advances the economic, educational and social policies required to energize and secure the Whitewater Area’s economic future, as well as protect its quality of life. By working closely with the City of Whitewater, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, Whitewater Unified School District and the local community, Whitewater can increase its visibility and become a beacon for business and leisure in the State of Wisconsin.

About the Discover Whitewater Series

The goal of the DWS is to promote the City of Whitewater and highlight its greatest features, while keeping everyone in the community active. All the proceeds from the race are donated to five local non-profit partners: Bethel House (which provides interim housing for homeless families), Whitewater LEADS, Working for Whitewater’s Wellness (W3), Whitewater Unified School District and the J-Hawk Aquatic Club. The DWS partners with the city, business community, university and the school district to make this a tremendous event that benefits all who participate.
