Comments from Coach Dittmer:

We won our meet 6-1 against University Lake. Our #2 and #3 doubles played great matches and won in convincing fashion. Both doubles teams were aggressive and converted on a lot of overheads. Henry Bresser and Nick Kuzoff both earned singles wins with good, consistent shot making. Joe Creanza wasn’t feeling his best, but was able to dig deep and pull out a victory in a 3rd set tiebreaker. #1 doubles rebounded to win the match after dropping the first set. Slate Spear lost his #1 singles match, but I felt like this was one of his top performances of the season. His opponent was just able to elevate his game a little more than Slate in the deciding tiebreak.

Margaret L. Bailey passed away peacefully in Lakeville, MN on May 11, 2018 at the age of 90 years old.

Margaret was born to parents Louis and Lorraine Kappel on December 19, 1927, in Madison, WI. In 1951, she married her Madison East High School sweetheart, Richard (Dick) Bailey. They resided together in West Milwaukee, WI, West Allis, WI and in 1968 they moved to their final family home in Whitewater, WI. Margie and Dick each retired from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 1990 after long fulfilling careers. Through all those years there was also endless time spent with family and friends at John’s Lake in Wautoma, WI. In 2013, Margie moved to Lakeville, MN near her son Mark for the remainder of her years.

Margie’s family was blessed by a person that defined the true meaning of selfless love. Margie was a loving and devoted mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She welcomed and included with an open heart all others that were part of the family. Her greatest joy was being with her family, spending time together, and watching each of them grow. She was very proud of them all. Margie’s kindness and generosity also touched many friends, relatives, and acquaintances throughout her life. Those people as well had a special place in Margie’s heart. She often shared special stories of wonderful times and experiences spent together. These memories will be with us for generations to come.

Margie is survived by her four children, Gregg (Debbie) Bailey, Liberty Township, OH; Mark (Heidi) Bailey, Lakeville, MN; Nancy Long, Simpsonville, SC; and Jane (Dan) Becker, Whitewater, WI. She has ten grandchildren; Mitch Bailey, Amanda Bailey, Kristen Olson, Nick Bailey, Tori Bailey, Brandon Long, Jordan Long, Casey Becker, Cody Becker, and Chad Becker and six precious great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Richard; brother Herbert Kappel, and granddaughter Shelby Long.

The family is very grateful for all of the thoughtfulness and heartfelt condolences. A private burial is being held at a later date.

UW-Whitewater Advances to NCAA Super Regional in Thrilling Fashion

The No. 25 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater softball team advanced to the NCAA Super Regional round for the first time since 2014 Monday with a 3-2 triumph over Coe (Iowa) in the championship game of the NCAA Whitewater Regional at van Steenderen Softball Complex.

With one out and one on in the top of the seventh and the Warhawks clinging to a 3-1 lead, the Kohawks’ Marisa Repp drove a pitch deep to center field. Leaping at the wall, senior centerfielder Caitlin Catino reached over and made the catch in the webbing of her glove to maintain the UW-Whitewater lead.

After Coe (28-14) plated a run after a walk and a base hit, junior Julia Camardo induced a fly ball to Catino in center for the final out of the game, sending the team to the Super Regional round.

The Warhawks (28-11-1) will visit Illinois Wesleyan Friday at 2 p.m. in the first game of a best-of-three series. The winner of the three-game set will head to the NCAA Championship round in Oklahoma City, Okla.

Bike Elves – May 15, 6:00 pm, Irvin L. Young Memorial Library

The Bike Elves will be here to discuss bicycle maintenance.  They will demonstrate how to properly inflate a tire, how to change tubes, and how to tell what size tube your bike will need.  This event is free and for the entire family.  The Bike Elves will have a few bikes on hand to give out to children who do not have a bike.  For those children who do have a bike, they will enter their name into a drawing for a bicycle accessory.

The Bike Elves project is focused on providing bicycles for children.  They take donated bikes, fix them up and give them away to children that do not have a bike, have a bike that is broken or a bike that is too small.  They often trade a broken bike for one that is not broken and trade up bikes from a too small bike to a right sized bike. Children are their major focus, however, they do provide bikes for adults who need bikes to get back and forth to work.  The Bike Elves are “changing the world, one smile at a time!”

Whippets track and field compete in RVC conference championship

[text-blocks id=”1611″ slug=”bob-mischka”]

Comments from Coach Houwers:

Saturday afternoon the Whippets Track and Field teams competed in the Rock Valley Conference Championships held at Jefferson High School.  The boys’ team finished 3rd out of 10, while the girls finished 6th.

Sashi Popke was the only Whippet to be crowned conference champion, winning both the pole vault and the long jump.  Both efforts were personal bests.  His pole vault of 13’3″ was 3″ better than his previous best. His long jump of 21′ 5.5″ was also a personal best and put him on the top ten list in the long jump.  That’s the 3rd event he’s made the top ten list for this season.

A number of other boys had big days.  Tyler Sheffield scored in the 100m, 200m, 4×100 relay and triple jump.  The meet was the first time Tyler competed in the triple jump, going 40′ 2.5″ for 5th place.  Will Leibbrand also had 4 events and scored in them all.  He was 3rd in the 100m, ran on the 2nd place 4x100m relay and 4th place 4x200m relay, and scored in the long jump.  Jack Mayer was 3rd in both the 110 hurdles and the 200m dash, and ran on the 4th place 4×400 relay.  Jacob Korf and Trenten Zahn tripled with the 4×800 relay, 800m run, and 4×400 relay, and both scored in all three events.  Juan Cuellar joined them on both relays and also scored in the 400m dash.  The boys put together a real strong performance across the board.  Everyone who competed carried their weight and made the meet a very exciting one.

Miranda Reynolds and Abby Grosinske had the highest finishes for the girls’ team, taking 2nd in the high jump and shot put respectively.  Miranda was competing for the first time this season after injuring her quad the first week of the season.  The 4×100 relay of Morgan Radaj, Abby Grosinske, Morgan Wiedenhoeft, and Grace Black was third.  Hailey Murphy and Ali Ketterhagen finished 4th in the 300 hurdles and high jump. The 4×200 relay of Morgan Radaj, Morgan Wiedenhoeft, Lily Dunklau and Catherine Skingdingsrude and the 4×800 relay team of Nicole Tomomitsu, Allisan Barrett, Jenna Lee, and Grace Fanshaw also medalled with a 4th place finish.  Nicole had a fantastic leadoff leg, really setting the table for the rest of the team.
