Despite the rainy weather and chilly temperatures, the ski team placed 4th and won the Best Comedy Award in the statewide tournament held July 19 – 22 in Wisconsin Rapids, WI.
The Whitewater Minneiska water ski team together with the Elkhorn Lauderdale team was very proud of their combined efforts and look forward to the teams’ permanent merger!

Greetings from Silverthorne, CO!
After leaving the 95-100° heat, long, straight and flat roads of Nebraska we journeyed to Silverthorne, CO. Just west of Denver. The scenery quickly went from huge steer lots and lush 10′ tall corn to mountains, curving highways and plenty of traffic.
Thankfully the temps cooled down as the corn disappeared and we even got a light mist of rain for 5 min, although not enough to even begin to take the first layer of bugs off the bikes. Rain is a factor on a motorcycle, as you can imagine.
*When do I pull over for the group?
*Do I watch my radar and pull over pre-emptively?
*If just light rain, keep going & wait if it gets heavier?
*If heavy, do I find the quickest exit under a gas station roof?
ALL THIS FOR THE SAKE OF PUTTING ON RAINGEAR or NOT PUTTING ON RAINGEAR.
Well, I don’t carry raingear so I debate with myself what to do for the group as I’m riding. This happened Thursday night… it began to spit rain and the wheels started turning but about exactly 5 seconds from the first drop, guess what song popped up on my music list… “Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head”!! 15 hours of downloaded music on shuffle and that comes on. God has an awesome sense of humor!
The next morning, leaving Colorado, it rained quite heavy for over an hour, leaving a dose of wet reality that Colorado really needs rain and even though we pray for dry riding, residents are praying for much-needed moisture.
Heading from Silverthorne, CO our next stop is destination Torrey, UT for 5 nights. Even though it’s interstate… I believe I-70 through Glen Canyon may be the most scenic of any interstate in the US and it goes on for a good chunk of time!
Exiting off I-70 to Utah 24 was spectacular and was like a 90-mile scenery crescendo! It began with canyonland type rock plateaus to Red towers of rock. To weaving through great vertical rock walls mountains of bright mineral striped bases and all the while swerving through 45 miles of brand new pavement!

Greetings friends!
Our 15th annual Banner City Biker summer trip took off from Jessica’s after a healthy breakfast. The destination this year is Torrey, Utah, on the west edge of Capital Reef Park, a stunning area of rocks and spires, canyons, monster rock outcroppings and huge cliffs!
Our group is just a bit smaller in numbers (life got in the way for some of our regulars) but we have some new riders as well! Our first stop will be Fremont Nebraska!
Heres the crew for 2018 Utah… 16 bikes and 22 people: Blake Scharine, Jeff & Kathy Foreyt, Cliff & Patty Storlie, Dick & Janet Jones, Russ & Mary Rogers, Rich & Vicki Noel, Rick & Samantha Noel, Mark & Marge Knudson, Scot & Joan Klabunde, Fred Klabunde & Karen Sautbine, Mike (Skippy) Mills, John Sanderson, and Jim Pieper.
It looks dry & hot in the forecast and that’s biking weather.
Day 1 was about 475 miles with the plan to meet John Sanderson
In Fremont. Average temp was 85 – 90 degrees thru most of the ride. We made a stop at JP cycle in Anamosa, IA and kept pushing through Iowa. Did you know there is a ton of corn and hogs all through Iowa? Well of course you did! Crops look great over here as they do at home. Lots of flat open road to cover as we enter Nebraska…until my next installment.

Born in Cicero and raised in Berwyn, Illinois, by first-generation Czechoslovakian immigrant parents, Joseph and Marie Svec, Joe went on to establish a career in academics as Professor of Theater Arts. He completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Theater Arts, English and History at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, and his Master’s degree in Theater Arts at The University of Wisconsin in Madison where he wrote his dissertation, “Czech Theater 1918-1938”. He then taught briefly at Minot State University, North Dakota and Valparaiso University, Indiana before returning to Cornell as Professor of Theater for the duration of his career. In addition to directing and designing sets for all college productions, he established a summer community theater and a well-loved student-directed children’s theater program.
During his summer months off from teaching and directing theater, Joe’s interests in architecture and history were employed in the restoration of historic homes in Mt. Vernon. He took great pride and care in rehabilitating them to their original appearance and greatly contributed to the preservation of Mt. Vernon’s beauty and appeal. After retirement, he embarked on his final project, restoring an Opera House in West Branch, Iowa.
He also had a deep passion for music and visitors could expect to hear the local classical music station played throughout the day. He enjoyed collecting vintage recordings, eventually selling to customers worldwide.
He married colleague, Karen Coburn, who had assisted him often with his musical theater productions. After retirement, the couple enjoyed traveling, residing for many years in Tucson, Arizona with several extended stays in Prague, Czech Republic and eventually settling in Karen’s hometown of Whitewater, Wisconsin.
Joe is survived by his wife, Karen, two sons from a previous marriage, John Svec and Joe Svec III (Teresa), and grandchildren Joe Svec IV, (14) and Thalia Svec (11) all of Iowa City, Iowa.
Joe was a kind, generous and creative man, and will be dearly missed.
