Whitewater’s summer middle school bilingual program focuses on service learning

Summer school was a bit different for students in Whitewater’s middle school four-week bilingual afternoon program this year.  Service learning was the focus.  Community partnerships were established that encouraged students to give back through a variety of projects while learning important skills.  Students visited the Whitewater Nature Preserve where they learned about invasive species and assisted in the removal of garlic mustard.  The Ice Age Trail of Walworth County provided students an opportunity to learn about this national trail while working on trail maintenance.  Students also visited Whitewater’s Effigy Mounds Preserve and had a chance to be immersed in the history of the sacred grounds.  Another project students enjoyed was creating artwork for the Bethel House.  After learning about joy and discussing what brings joy, students created canvases that displayed this feeling. Students rounded out their final week by assisting in the Lincoln Elementary School Garden where there were interactive lessons and some garden projects to attend to.  About 15 students participated in these unique experiences.  Even though the projects challenged students, they enjoyed the opportunity to give back to their community.

City of Whitewater Receives GFOA Budget Award

The City of Whitewater proudly receives its first Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the 2018 budget.

The award represents a significant achievement reflecting the commitment of city staff to utilize best practices within governmental budgeting. In order to receive the budget award, the City of Whitewater had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. These guidelines are designed to assess how well an entity’s budget serves as:

  • A policy document
  • A financial plan
  • An operations guide
  • A communications device

Budget documents must be rated as “proficient” in all four categories, and in fourteen mandatory criteria within those categories to receive the award.

When a Distinguished Budget Presentation Award is granted to an entity, a Certificate of Recognition for Budget Presentation is also presented to the individuals or department designated as being primarily responsible for having achieved the award. This has been presented to Cameron Clapper, City Manager; Steve Hatton, Finance Director; and Karen Dieter, Comptroller.

“We are very proud to have received this award,” said Finance Director, Steve Hatton. “This was the first year the City of Whitewater submitted a budget to the GFOA Award Program. We developed a number of enhancements to our 2018 Budget document with this program in mind. Each member of our staff played an important role in compiling and submitting information for us to create a complete and digestible document. We have already begun the 2019 budget process and are implementing several suggestions received through the GFOA program to further improve next year’s document.”

One purpose for submitting a governmental budget to this awards program is to benchmark efforts to improve the quality of local budgeting against established best practices. This program serves as an excellent tool for local governments throughout North America.

Over 1,000 municipalities were awarded the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award across the nation for the 2017 budget year, only 22 of which were in Wisconsin. Whitewater is proud to have joined the group of Wisconsin award winners for the 2018 budget year. The most recent Budget Award recipients, along with their corresponding budget documents, are posted quarterly on GFOA’s website www.gfoa.org.

Mixed Media Exhibit at the Cultural Arts Center in August

The Whitewater Arts Alliance is featuring a “Making Magic with Mixed Media” show at the Cultural Arts Center, 402 West Main Street, during the month of August 2018.   “Making Magic with Mixed Media” will run from Thursday, August 2 to Sunday, August 26 and is free. The CAC will be open from Noon to 5 p.m. every Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday during that time.  The closing reception will be held at the CAC on Sunday, August 26 from 1 to 3 p.m.

As of July 17, artists have pledged more than 80 pieces in 2-D or 3-D. In this first-of-its-kind show at the Whitewater CAC, mixed media is broadly defined to include the creation of pieces of art using more than one medium — acrylics, oil, watercolor, pastels, pen and ink, pencil, etc. — to acrylic with collage, oil and cold wax, assemblage, etc. The options can be as narrow or broad as one’s imagination. The Whitewater Arts Alliance is excited to provide a showcase where this magical art will be featured and celebrated.

The goal of this exhibit is to stimulate interest in mixed media among artists from around the state. Artwork must be completed within the last two years and not previously exhibited at the Cultural Arts Center.

There will also be three demonstrations using different materials and techniques in mixed media.  All will be held at the Cultural Arts Center (402 W. Main Street) from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.  They include:

“Getting Acquainted With Alcohol Ink and Penby Kathy Gibbs, Thursday, August 9

“Watercolor and Mixed Media” by Karolyn Alexander, Friday, August 17

“From Pop Can to Pop Art” by Dawn Hunter, Thursday, August 23

These demos are free, and no reservation is required.  However, for planning purposes, the instructors would appreciate people letting them know if they plan to attend.  Interested parties should please email Linda Long (Lcubed12@gmail.com) or call 262-473-5538 with the demo(s) of interest to them.

More information can be found on http://www.whitewaterarts.org/mixed-media-exhibit.html

Whitewater’s Cultural Arts Center is located on 402 West Main Street in the historic White building near the Birge Fountain.  Parking is behind the building, with an elevator available from the parking lot entrance.
