A retired sheriff (Kevin Costner) and his wife (Diane Lane) learn, after the death of their son, that their grandson has been adopted by a family living in a compound in the Dakotas, away from law enforcement and modern amenities. With no other recourse, they embark on a mission to get the boy back, no matter what the cost.
