Whitewater Community Foundation Announces its 2018 Annual Appeal

November 30, 2018

The Board of Directors of the Whitewater Community Foundation invite community members and businesses to invest in Whitewater by joining in their 2018 Annual Campaign. Our current Board members are Danielle Frawley (President), Mark Dorn (Vice President), Kevin Brunner (Past President), David Yokum (Secretary), Geoff Hale (Treasurer), Julie Caldwell, Thayer Coburn, Mark Elworthy, Ron Jongetjes, Therese Kennedy, Sonia Soto, Hector Villarreal and Kristine Zaballos.

Earlier this year, the Whitewater Unified School District, under the stewardship of the Foundation, was honored to receive a  $100,000 Endowment from the Kikkoman Foods Foundation, Inc. that will fund additional scholarships for the benefit of our graduating seniors.  To thank Kikkoman for their generous gift, the Board of Directors has set a goal this year to raise matching funds, and we need your help. Our success depends on the generosity of people like you!

Although providing scholarships is an important part of the Foundation’s mission, Community Action Grants are awarded by the Foundation twice annually to local civic partners who do good works in our community.  During our most recent Fall Cycle of grants, a total of nine grants were awarded totaling $10,530. A $1,500 grant was awarded to New Beginnings, an organization new to Whitewater that offers counseling and other support to individuals and families who find themselves in need. A $2,500 grant was awarded to Whitewater Youth Soccer Club to purchase soccer goal frames for Halverson Field. Other grants were awarded to the Irvin L. Young Auditorium/Washington Elementary School, Wisconsin Makers, Whitewater Landmarks Commission, Geneva Lakes Conservancy-First Annual Birding Festival, Lakeview Elementary Music Program, United Way of Jefferson/Walworth Counties “Ride United” Program, and Irvin L. Young Library.

Meet Tilla, the Whitewater Police Department new K-9 officer

November 28, 2018

The Whitewater Police Department will officially swear in their newest canine officer, Tilla, who will be accompanied by his handler, Officer Justin Stuppy, at the December 4th Common Council meeting.

The City of Whitewater Police Department’s K-9 program focuses on drug detection and tracking and will now add the component of apprehension. With the retirement of canine officer Boomer in January 2017 and the passing of canine officer Ruso in July 2018, the addition of Tilla allows for the police department to train in all three techniques.

The department worked with Little Rock K-9 Academy in Little Rock, Arkansas, the same academy who worked with K-9 officer Ruso. This well-respected kennel has received high recognition for their K-9 dogs and training program.

Tilla, a high energy, 2-year-old male, black German Shepard from the Netherlands was chosen as the new K-9 officer. Tilla graduated from Little Rock K9 Academy after months of training. Tilla is certified in narcotics detection, tracking lost persons or suspects and apprehension.

“Tilla is expected to be a great addition to our agency,” said Police Chief Aaron M. Raap. “It has been said that ‘dogs don’t rationalize.’ They don’t hold anything against a person. They don’t see the outside of a human but the inside of a human,” Chief Raap shared. “K-9 Officer Tilla and Officer Stuppy have been properly trained and they will undoubtedly prove to be a force multiplier within our community.”
