Believe in ghosts or spirits? Skeptical about the paranormal? People of all viewpoints are welcome to come to an informational session about hauntings by the Paranormal Investigators of Milwaukee (PIM). Founded in 2007, the group has investigated many locations in the area, including the Milwaukee Public Museum, Riverside Theater and several area residences. The group will be on hand to discuss types of hauntings, the ways they as a team investigate claims of the paranormal along with information on how to be an investigator. Evidence will also be showcased from prior PIM investigations. Come with questions. Leave with answers.

We welcome everyone in the community to attend our meetings and participate in our events. If you require accommodations to make that possible for you, please call the office of the Library Director (473-0530) 72 hours prior to the meeting.

Someone call the DNR Conservation Warden – This Guy/Gal is Violating the “No Fishing” Order on Trippe Lake

The most observed wildlife in the city this past week must be a river otter who is enjoying Trippe Lake. Three readers have submitted photos of the otter. On Friday afternoon the otter could be observed from the bridge by the Trippe Lake dam. Take Wisconsin Street and turn to the east at the sign just past Clay Street, near the former American Legion building.

It seems that one Trippe Lake resident is unable to read this sign

Steve Watson submitted the photos below that he took of the otter on Monday morning. He states, “I watched it till I got cold and had to continue on my walk. It was quite playful….I take my daily walk by the lakes every morning.”

Lesley Haven submitted the below photos that she took on Tuesday evening. She says of the North American river otter, “It spent quite a while playing in the sun before catching dinner. I am not an expert on fish, but I believe it has a yellow bullhead.”

Janis Goder shared the photos below that she took on Monday. She says, “The resident otter on Trippe Lake today, catching and eating a prodigious amount of fish.”

Thus far there seems to be no evidence of more than one otter in the lake. Readers may be interested in further information about the otters, which may be found on this Wikipedia page.

Our thanks to Steve Watson, Lesley Haven, and Janis Goder for sharing these great pictures with us.

#FlashbackFriday with the Historical Society – Another Image from the 1881 Snowstorm!

This week’s #FlashbackFriday with the Whitewater Historical Society follows up last’s week’s with another image from the 1881 snowstorm!

This past week marks the storm’s 140 year anniversary, as it hit in two waves between February 26 and March 4. A heavy rainstorm, followed by over four feet of snow, pounded the city that week. Record books in Madison indicate that approximately 114 inches of snow fell in total that winter. This stereoscope view, courtesy of local photographer J.P. Whipple, shows the snow drifts along the sidewalks on the north side of Main Street.

Join us next week for more from the Whitewater Historical Society collections!
