UWW/Community Optimist Club mitten trees are “sprouting” all across our community

L to R: Optimist Connie Murray, WUSD reps: Mary Geraghty and Lenora Heim and Club Pres. Dave Halbach.

THE MITTEN TREES ARE “SPROUTING” ALL ACROSS OUR COMMUNITY!

What a great sight to see! There are 7 special “Mitten Trees” that are being decorated with all sorts of mittens, hats, scarves, socks, underwear and even snow pants to make sure none of our school children have to go out without the right gear! The UWW/Community Optimist Club has sponsored this important collection since 1991 as part of their goal to be “Friend of Youth”.

Collection sites in Whitewater include the Irvin L Young Auditorium, the University Center, First English Lutheran Church, Associated Bank, First Citizen’s State Bank, Fort Community Credit Union (FCCU), and Premier Bank. In addition to collecting mittens, hats, and scarves underwear, socks and snow pants (for elementary school kids) are encouraged, for they are used as emergency items for the kids throughout the school year. Gift cards will also be accepted by Lanora Heim, Director of Pupil Services for the Whitewater Unified School District and Coordinator of the Family Emergency fund, to purchase items as needed. Check with your church to see if they are participating.

Donations are being accepted now through Tuesday, December 18th by 4 pm.

There is especially a need for smaller sizes since there are more than 300 children under age 5 in the Whitewater Unified School District.

Whitewater Police Department’s Second Annual Shop with a Cop Event a Success

The Whitewater Police Department held their second successful Shop with a Cop event on December 10th.

One student from each elementary school within the Whitewater Unified School District was selected to join local law enforcement to shop for the holidays; Gio from Washington, Gavin from Lakeview and Jacob from Lincoln.

Detective Jake Hintz, Officer Shane Brandl, Officer Liz Tlougan, Support Services Manager Kathy Boyd, Records Technician Angela Sahr and Dispatcher Angieleek Lipski and Chief Aaron Raap met with the students and their families at Wal-Mart in Whitewater. Staff split into teams and helped the students find gifts for their families and themselves.

Each student was presented with a $100 gift card from the Whitewater Crime Prevention Fund along with an additional $25 from Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart also gave each family a $50 gift certificate to use for groceries.

“We are grateful for the wonderful partnership we have with the Whitewater Unified School District. They did an excellent job of selecting deserving and respectful students for this event,” said Chief Aaron Raap. “We also value and deeply appreciate our ongoing partnership with our local Walmart.”

The students were driven in squad cars back to the police department where staff helped them wrap their gifts while enjoying cookies and hot chocolate.

“It is incredibly rewarding to work with a professional, caring and dedicated law enforcement team every day. But when we have or can create an opportunity to interact with our community, especially the youth of Whitewater, it really means so much more,” said Raap. “We hope that this event will make the holidays a little more special for these young students and their families.”

WHS Boys’ swimming: Whitewater 71 vs Burlington 99

[text-blocks id=”1611″]

From Coach Foucault:

The Whippets had a strong first dual meet against Conference opponent Burlington Co-op. Despite the loss, the Whippets were able to post 4 times to the Top 10 All Time list, swim 18 out of 26 best times and take 1st in five races. We also had several swimmers take on new races.

Earning 1st place finishes for the Whippets were Devin Bazeley in the 200 Freestyle, Young Liang in the 100 Butterfly and 100 Backstroke, Michael Kuhl in the 500 Freestyle and the 400 Freestyle Relay team of Devin Bazeley, Aidan Coburn, Wesley Salverson and Jake Mayer took 1st. Earning top 10 times were Young Liang finishing 3rd all-time in the 100 Butterfly and fourth all-time in the 100 Backstroke, Jack Mayer is now 7th all-time in the 100 Butterfly and Devin Bazeley is 8th all-time in the 100 Breaststroke.

We had several swimmers take on some new or tough races. Wesley Salverson and Michael Kuhl continue to take on the long races with both of them racing the 200 IM and 500 Freestyle. Wesley dropped 17 seconds in his 500 and Michael continues to drop time in his 500 too. Jon Chan swam the 500 Freestyle for the first time and earned Varsity points for the team with his strong finish. Jon Zheng was able to drop 3 seconds in his 100 Freestyle while teammate Aidan Coburn also dropped 3 seconds in his 100 Backstroke race. Zach Tomomitsu took on a new race swimming the 100 Backstroke while teammate Jovany Manriquez took on the 200 Individual Medley for the first time and was able to score the team some points.

The team is starting to race well in relays and are posting some nice splits. Dropping significant time in our relays were Aidan Coburn 31.28 (50 Back) & 59.34 (100 Freestyle), Wesley Salverson 30.81 (50 Free) & 1:08.97 (100 Free), Jon Zheng 29.86 (50 Free), Jack Mayer 51.03 (100 Freestyle) and Young Liang 22.30 & 48.43 (50 & 100 Free on 100 Free Relay Split).

One of the best highlights from the meet was receiving comments from two different individuals about how amazing our boys were in being polite, kind, gracious and encouraging to both teams. This is an amazing group of young men ready to make an impact at Whitewater High School! Way to go Whippets!
