Gladys Mary Gudeyon, age 96, passed away on January 12, 2020 at Our House Senior Living in Whitewater, WI.

Gladys was born on January 4, 1924, the daughter of Charles and Leta Porter. She met her sweetheart, Harvey Gudeyon, at a dance in Whitewater and they married on February 9, 1944. They raised three children and farmed in Richmond until retiring and moving to Whitewater in 2006.

Gladie was a member of the Richmond United Methodist Church and was very active in Sunday school and church activities over the years. She was an excellent seamstress and a talented cake decorator, having made wedding cakes for each of her children as well as numerous special occasion cakes for friends and relatives. She loved to dance, and she and Harv were affectionately known as that “cute little dancing couple” who attended polka fests and dances throughout the state.

Gladie is survived by her son, Richard (Karen) of Richmond; daughter, Kathleen (Donald) Klemp of Waterloo; daughter, Joyce (Bruce) Traxler of Whitewater; 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Gladie was preceded in death by Harvey, her husband of nearly 70 years; sister, Alice White, and brothers, Louis, Roy, and Richard Porter.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 16, 2020 at the Richmond United Methodist Church with interment in the Richmond Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4-6 p.m. on Wednesday, January 15, 2020, at the Nitardy Funeral Home in Whitewater, WI and after 10:00 on Thursday, January 16, 2020 at the church until the time of services.

Memorials may be given to the Richmond United Methodist Church or to Rainbow Hospice of Jefferson, WI.

The family would like to thank the staff at Our House as well as Rainbow Hospice for their loving care and support.

Census Bureau Ramps Up Hiring Efforts for 2020 Census: Recruiting Underway Nationwide for More Applicants

The U.S. Census Bureau is ramping up its national recruiting efforts to hire up to 500,000 temporary, part-time census takers for the 2020 Census in communities across the country to reach its goal of more than 2 million applicants.

The positions offer competitive pay, flexible hours, paid training, and weekly paychecks. To determine the pay rate in a specific area, learn more about these positions, or apply for one of the temporary jobs, visit 2020census.gov/jobs.

“Whether you’re looking to earn some extra cash, pay down your student debt, or offset holiday season spending, our part-time positions are a great way to do that,” said Census Bureau Director Steven Dillingham. “What better way to earn some extra money and help shape the future of your community for the next 10 years than with the 2020 Census?”

Anyone age 18 and older, such as recent high school graduates, college students, veterans, retirees, military spouses, seasonal workers and people who are bilingual are highly encouraged to apply. People who already have jobs and want to earn extra income evenings and weekends are also encouraged to apply. The selection process begins this month, with paid training occurring in March and April. After paid training, most positions work between May and early July.

In addition, the Census Bureau released a new interactive map to help partners and job seekers identify areas where hiring is taking place. The Census Bureau needs more applicants in all 50 states, especially in Hawaii, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin. The Census Bureau makes every effort to hire locally so census takers are familiar with the neighborhoods they are assigned to work.

“Aside from Puerto Rico, that has already received enough applicants to fill all jobs in the Commonwealth, every other area throughout the nation needs more applicants right now,” said Timothy Olson, Census Bureau associate director for Field Operations. “With low unemployment, the Census Bureau is taking extraordinary efforts to attract enough applicants to fill nearly 500,000 positions this spring.”

Census takers are critical for their communities during the 2020 Census — going door to door to collect responses from households who have not responded online, by phone or by mail.

“Our aim is to reach interested applicants right now, inform them of updated pay rates in their area, and get them into the applicant pool to be considered for these critical jobs,” said Olson. “The hiring process occurs in stages, and we are encouraging everyone to apply right now before selections begin in January and February. Most census taker jobs begin training and work this spring.”

The U.S. Constitution mandates that a census of the population be conducted every 10 years. Census statistics are used to determine the number of seats each state holds in the U.S. House of Representatives and inform how state, local and federal lawmakers will allocate billions of dollars in federal funds to local communities every year for the next 10 years.

UW-W drew to within nine again with 1:50 to play, but was unable to draw any closer.

State Treasurer to Join Rep. Vruwink at Forum on Student Loan Debt

State Treasurer Sarah Godlewski

State Treasurer Sarah Godlewski and Rep. Don Vruwink (D-Milton) will hold a forum on Wednesday, January 15th to hear from community members and business owners in the 43rd Assembly District on the impact of student loan debt.

The 43rd Assembly District includes much of Rock County and parts of Walworth County, Jefferson County, and Dane County.  The forum will be hosted jointly by Forward Janesville and the Milton Area Chamber of Commerce.

State Representative Don Vruwink

WHAT: Student Loan Debt Forum with State Treasurer Sarah Godlewski & Rep. Don Vruwink

WHEN: Wednesday, January 15th, 2019

TIME: Noon to 1 p.m.

WHERE: Culver’s Restaurant, 571 E Richardson Springs Rd, Edgerton (Newville)

State Treasurer Sarah Godlewski and Rep. Don Vruwink will hold a forum to discuss strategies to help borrowers refinance at lower interest rates, help lenders build public-private partnerships, and help create new consumer protections. Since becoming State Treasurer, Godlewski has made economic security a top priority, holding listening sessions statewide to hear personal stories and potential solutions to reducing the burden of student loan debt on Wisconsinites.

Wisconsin has a $24.4 billion student loan debt problem, according to a report by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Another report by The Institute for College Access and Success shows Wisconsin ranks 13th highest in average debt when looking at a graduate from the class of 2018.

“How can we expect Wisconsinites to get ahead when they start from behind with student loan debt at high interest rates?” said State Treasurer Godlewski. “This is about giving people a chance at financial security while also helping our state’s economy.”

“Helping our young people get out from under student debt will not be an easy undertaking, but we are up to the challenge,” Vruwink said. “I look forward to hearing from people in the communities I represent.”

Palmyra-Eagle School District Denied Dissolution Request (UPDATED for links to additional reports.)

The School District Boundary Appeal Board (SDBAB) denied the dissolution of the Palmyra-Eagle Area School District (PEASD) Thursday evening, January 9. In doing so, PEASD will be expected to continue operating for the 2020-21 school year and beyond. The dissolution process began after PEASD failed to pass an operating referendum in April 2019 and after the PEASD School Board took action first to consider dissolving and a second time to order dissolution. After the second vote, the SDBAB was charged with making the final decision.

The SDBAB began meeting in November 2019 to decide the fate of PEASD and was required to make their decision by January 15, 2020. Of the seven SDBAB members, six voted to deny the dissolution.

Casey Judd, WUSD School Board President, said, “I hope that the Palmyra-Eagle Area School District can find a way to do what is in the best interest of their students. Schools are a cornerstone of any community, and every school district should have the resources and community support to provide a quality education.”
