Doris Strehlow of Omro (formerly of LaGrange) passed away March 3, 2020

Doris Strehlow of Omro passed away March 3, 2020.

Doris (Klitzkie) Strehlow, was born November 8, 1924, to Harry and Inez (Piper) Klitzkie in Greeley, CO. The family moved to La Grange, WI where she resided until graduating Whitewater Teacher’s College in 1946. She moved to Winneconne to begin her teaching career.

Doris met her “husband to be,” Lewis “Red” Strehlow while learning to fly at Omro Ginnow Airport. Because she was a business teacher and recognized Red’s office needed “help” she traded her talents for flight lessons! She took her solo flight test in December of 1945.

Doris and Red were married on June 7, 1947. They made their home in Omro, working and raising their four children, JoAnn, Germantown; Greg, St. Paul, MN; Mark (Cindy Frohrib), Omro; Kent (Judy Gaffney), Oshkosh.

In the years following Doris and Red were instrumental in organizing the Fox Skimmer Ski Club. They traveled by motor coach to ski tournaments supporting their “skiing children!”

Doris was an avid Green Bay Packer fan having attended many games. She was very proud of the UW-Whitewater sport teams; she would follow players as they advanced into pro teams and watch whenever possible.

Doris believed 4-H was important so in 1963 she organized the “Foxy Foxetts” with Mrs. MaryJane Hoger.

This was a busy time for Doris and Red, raising kids, keeping house, working in the insurance office. Traveling with the Ski Club, 4-H, being a charter member of the Omro Women Service League in 1959. She was recently recognized for 60 years of service. She was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Omro, serving in many ways.

Doris is well known for her hickory nut pies, they usually sold before they arrived at the sale!

She began teaching at Omro High School in 1967. Many students were taught typing, and later keyboarding. Doris retired in 1994.

After retiring she remained active in Omro activities, Omro Scholarship Committee, selling concessions at sport games, holding offices on the Winnebago County Retired Teachers. She organized bus trips for Nationwide tours. She volunteered and served on the board of the Omro Thrift Store, (that she helped get started), and recently volunteered at the Omro Food Pantry.

Doris was preceded in death by an infant son, Brian; her husband, Red; and her feline friend, Fritz.

She is survived by her children, her current feline friend Fluffy, other relatives, and many friends.

A visitation for family and friends will be on Monday, March 9, 2020, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church 955 N. Webster Ave. Omro. A funeral service will be held on Monday at 11:00 a.m. at the church with Rev. Travis Shafer officiating. Burial will follow in the Omro Cemetery.

The family would like to recognize and thank Kelly Hess and Kris Forester for their kind and compassionate care and help with their Mom.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Strehlow Family Scholarship Fund, (for Omro students). In care of Oshkosh Area Community Foundation, 230 Ohio St. Oshkosh, WI 54902.

If you wish please submit online condolences to muellerfh.net.

Ferradermis Travels to Duluth for Northern Lights Regional; 2020 Season Suspended

Whitewater High School’s FIRST Robotics Team Ferradermis traveled to Duluth from March 4-7 to compete in the Northern Lights Regional with and against 59 teams from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, and Sweden. Ferradermis ended the qualification matches with a 6-3 record and ranked 13th out of 59.

Upon arriving in Duluth, the team traveled to the University of Minnesota Duluth for a tour of two of their engineering labs. Dr. Craig Hill from the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department talked with the team about the robotic systems he is developing for harnessing marine energy. Two graduate students then talked the students through their projects in the Dementia and Elderly Care Robotics and Sensing Lab. We met Pepper the robot who is being programmed to interact with residents in nursing homes and to read sign language.

Some teams make it a practice to give out awards of their own in the form of plaques to recognize teams for outstanding qualities. While in Duluth, Ferradermis received the “Help to Educate” award from Robo Remedy, Team 7103 from Manitowoc.

The team competed hard throughout the weekend, making improvements to the Power Cell intake and shooter between each match, and getting to the point where they could shoot Power Cells in autonomous mode in the period before the drivers could touch the robot. They worked and worked to make their climber operational throughout the week as well, but came home with a goal of an operational climber before the Wisconsin Regional.

The Chairman’s Award presentation crew put on a magic show for the judges to share the magic of Ferradermis and everything they do that isn’t about building a robot.

The team had planned to use the Duluth competition as a launchpad to defend their back-to-back titles at the Wisconsin Regional in Milwaukee from March 18 – 21, but on March 13, FIRST officially suspended the 2020 season and cancelled the World Championships for 2020. Ferradermis was lucky to be able to compete in at least one event this year, as there are seven weeks of competitions (with Duluth being held in week 2), and any teams that did not have week 1 or week 2 events never got to put their robot to the test. Teams are now looking forward to several off-season events this summer in which they can use their 2020 robot.

WI Dept of Financial Institutions Reminds Investors to Beware of Con Artists Looking to Profit from Fear and Uncertainty Related to COVID-19

MADISON, Wis. – In light of the ongoing developments related to the current COVID-19 situation and its impact on financial markets, the Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions (DFI) reminds Wisconsin investors to be wary of con artists seeking to capitalize on fear and uncertainty.

“We know con artists are opportunistic and use current events to cloak their schemes with an air of immediacy and legitimacy. Never make an investment decision without understanding exactly what you are investing in, who you are doing business with, where your money is going, how it will be used, and how you can get it back,” said DFI Secretary Kathy Blumenfeld. “Always ask if the salesperson and the security are registered with your state securities regulator.”

Blumenfeld also said investors should be on the lookout for scam artists trying to use the market downturn and the coronavirus to scare investors into so-called “safer” or “guaranteed” investments. “If you have concerns about your retirement accounts or investments, talk to your financial professional,” said Blumenfeld. “Avoid making decisions based on panic or fear.”

To help investors identify common telltale signs of possible investment fraud, DFI provided three questions to ask before making a new investment.

First, is the investment being offered with a guaranteed high return with little or no risk? All investments carry the risk that you may potentially lose some or even all of your money. Anyone who says their investment offer has no risk is lying. No one can guarantee an investment return.

Second, is there a sense of urgency or limited availability surrounding the investment? If the offer is legitimate, it will be there later. If someone offers you a “can’t miss” investment opportunity and puts you on the spot, don’t be afraid to walk away.

Third, is the person offering the investment, and the investment itself, properly licensed or registered? For the same reasons you wouldn’t go to an unlicensed doctor or dentist, you should avoid unregistered investment salespeople and their products.

“Make sure you have all the facts before you hand your money over to someone else to invest,” said Blumenfeld.

In addition, Blumenfeld also encourages investors to contact DFI with any questions about the investment professional they are working with or the product being offered at (608)-266-2139 and online via BrokerCheck at https://brokercheck.finra.org/.

Fort HealthCare COVID–19 Pandemic Response

Fort HealthCare is prepared to respond to many different medical events, including the current COVID – 19 pandemic. Fort HealthCare is in regular contact with the Jefferson County Health Department and Wisconsin Department of Health Services in response to COVID – 19 and will follow the most current recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

Currently, there are no confirmed cased of COVID – 19 in Jefferson County. Until cases are confirmed in the county, it is likely that flu-like symptoms are the result of other germs that commonly circulate this time of year, and NOT COVID–19.

The best ways to stay well are: handwashing (good technique with soap and water is as effective as antibacterial soap), hand sanitizer (if handwashing is not possible), avoiding touching your eyes, nose, face or mouth with unwashed hands, avoiding people that are ill, good cough etiquette, single use tissue that is disposed after use and hands cleaned following use, and staying home when you are ill.

Fort HealthCare will test for COVID – 19 following CDC and Jefferson County Health Department criteria.
Those criteria INCLUDE:
– Patient has symptoms (fever and cough, rash, shortness of breath) AND patient has contacted a person with confirmed COVID – 19 infection (this is rare, in Jefferson County currently)
– Patient has symptoms (fever and cough, rash, shortness of breath) AND patient has travelled to areas with COVID – 19 activity.

If those criteria are not met, the test is of little value as the likelihood of a positive result is very low. In addition, if testing is deemed appropriate, patients are considered Persons Under Investigation (PUI) by the CDC and must remain isolated (typically at home unless supportive medical treatment is required) until the result is known, and perhaps longer.

As with any respiratory illness this time of year, consult your provider (or use e+CARE) if symptoms are severe to determine whether you need to be seen or if testing is appropriate. If you have mild symptoms and no fever, and no contact or significant travel history the advice is the same as it always was: fluids, rest, over the counter medicines for symptom relief, and prevent the spread to others (hand hygiene, cough etiquette, avoid contact with others, especially at risk populations such as the very young, very old, or those with compromised immune systems.

About Fort HealthCare
Fort HealthCare is committed to improving the health and well-being of our communities, with a vision to be the healthiest community in Wisconsin. As the leading healthcare provider in the region, it is our goal to reach as many members of the community as possible with health and wellness messages, providing tools and resources to help individuals improve their health and quality of life, while collaborating with several partners to positively improve the population’s health overall on a long term basis.
