UW-Whitewater Department of Music invites you to Be Instrumental

(University of Wisconsin-Whitewater College of Arts and Communication, Department of Music, submission) The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Department of Music began a campaign in December inviting the public to donate their used instruments to the “Be Instrumental” campaign. The campaign comes as a partnership with the White House of Music and has a direct impact on each music education student. The initiative was designed to continue the outstanding preparation of the nationally-recognized Music Education program at UW-Whitewater.

To date, the department has received a myriad of donations, but is still looking for instruments. “The donations we have received to date are incredibly generous, but we are still in need,” says Mike Dugan, Chair of the Department of Music. “As a music educator, you have to be able to teach a variety of instruments to students. In the midst of this financially challenging year for businesses, we aren’t sourcing the same instrument donations we have in the past. We decided it was time to lean on and into our community to help our students. At this point, we are still seeking both monetary donations and instrument donations. Our department is still looking for Trombones; Alto Saxophone; Clarinet; Violin; Cello; String Bass; Oboe; Cornet/Trumpet; Horn; Bassoon, and Percussion Practice Pads and Stands.”

In partnership with the White House of Music, there are two options to engage in this unique program, listed below. All donations are tax-deductible to the extent of the law.

Donate Your Used Instrument

Donate your slightly used instrument and receive a letter verifying the donation as a gift. If your instrument needs slight repairs to get it into proper playing condition, the department hopes you may be able to make those repairs prior to donation. If repairs are unable to be made, the instrument would be examined for an appraisal of value. To make a donation, visit: https://www.uww.edu/cac/music/be-instrumental

Purchase an Instrument or Contribute Towards the Purchase of an Instrument

Purchase or donate through the White House of Music and a student-line instrument will be supplied to the UW-Whitewater Department of Music. White House will keep all donations segregated so any dollar amount donated can accumulate to the dollar value needed for a purchase. In addition, Chris White, President and CEO of White House of Music and 1993 UW-Whitewater alum, will add to this offer a full year of free service for any instrument purchased and donated to the Be Instrumental initiative.  A win-win offer we hope you will find enticing!  Follow this link to see a list of instruments we need with a donation tab to White House of Music: https://white-house-of-music-inc-uww.square.site/

“Our community is so supportive of the work we do – from attending concerts to their monetary donations and we hope they will take part in this campaign so Whitewater can continue its long tradition of being one of the best universities for Music Education,” says Dugan. If you are interested in making a donation, please visit the website at: https://www.uww.edu/cac/music/be-instrumental. For questions or more information, please contact uwwmusic@uww.edu.

Bazeley Qualifies Two Events for State Swim

Article and Photo By Gina Foucault
Whitewater High School Head Swim Coach

Devin Bazeley is headed to STATE! Congratulations to Devin on qualifying in his two individual events for the 2021 State swim meet.  Devin will swim on Friday, February 5th, at the Waukesha South High School Natatorium with the competition beginning at 6:30 p.m. Devin will swim the 200 Yard Freestyle and the 100 Yard Butterfly. Devin was able to win the 100 Butterfly with a lifetime best time and was 2nd in the 200 Freestyle which was also a lifetime best time; both times are new Top 10 Times for Whitewater High School. Devin also led off the 400 Freestyle Relay with a new 100 Freestyle Top 10 Time.

All of our Whippets worked hard for this final swim meet with many achieving additional best times. Wyatt Anderson dropped three seconds in his 200 Individual Medley and also swam a best time in the 100 Breaststroke, too. Wyatt placed 11th in the 200 Individual Medley and 14th in the 100 Breaststroke; both races earned points toward our final score.

Tyler Arnett continued to shine, swimming right on his already fast season best times. Tyler placed 11th in the 200 Freestyle and 6th in the 500 Freestyle. Tyler was also a part of our 200 Medley and 400 Freestyle relay teams; the Medley Relay earned 6th place, and our 400 Freestyle Relay placed 7th.

Zach Tomomitsu, Carter Schepp, and Jake Kuhlow all swam right on their season best times and gained more experience swimming in the end of season Championship Meets. Carter continuously dropped time all season and earned his way onto the 200 Medley and 400 Freestyle Relays. Jake also had significant time drops all year and earned his spot on both the 200 and 400 Freestyle Relays. It’s been great having these hard working athletes on the team!

Cole Schlicher had a good meet with a new best time in the 50 Freestyle. Cole swam a tough 100 Breaststroke with his goggles around his nose and mouth after the start; Cole didn’t let it stop him as he went right on his season best time and placed 15th overall, scoring points for the team. Cole was new to the team this year and will be a big contributor to the team next year.

Keith Cameron swam a strong Sectional Meet with best times in both the 50 Freestyle and 100 Breaststroke. Keith was able to place 13th in the 100 Breaststroke, scoring points for the team. Keith also swam on both the 200 Medley and 200 Freestyle Relays.

I am very proud of how hard all of our athletes worked this year and can’t wait to see what another year of experience will do for them. Good luck to Devin at the WIAA State Swim meet this Friday!

Five Whippet Wrestlers Advance to Sectionals

Article by John Schimming
Whitewater High School Head Wrestling Coach
jschimming@wwusd.org

Saturday, January 30, the Whippet Wrestlers traveled to Evansville to participate in a very competitive Regional Tournament and wrestled quite well. It was very exciting to wrestle on a Saturday again as we have not had that opportunity this season. When the dust settled, the team found themselves in 2nd place behind host Evansville and had 5 individuals qualify for the sectional tournament.

David Cushman led the way, winning a championship at 152 pounds. David wrestled very well-controlled matches all day, staying in good position throughout.

Coming in second place were Brian Porcaro, Marcus DePorter, Carter Friend, and Mason DePorter. All three of these young men found themselves in the finals but came up just short. Fortunately, they were able to hold onto their position for the right to compete another week.

Just missing out on qualifying were CJ Tomomitsu and Aaron Porras. Both of these young men took 3rd place with tough losses in their true second place match.

The coaches are very proud of the team during a season in which there were many question marks for them along the way. They should be proud of how they competed today as everyone on the team represented Whitewater High School extremely well.

Our qualifiers will compete again next Saturday when they travel to Richland Center to compete for a trip to State. The sectional will also take the top two in each weight class to the next level of competition.
