UW System targets new funds to help incoming freshmen prepare for university with summer bridge programs

(UW System press release) MADISON, Wis.—The University of Wisconsin System will provide summer learning assistance to 1,400 additional incoming freshmen this year, more than doubling the number of admitted students receiving help through campus-based summer bridge programs.

Summer bridge programs are critical to ensuring that high school graduates make a successful transition to university. While program details and offerings differ at each university, many of them have core areas in common, including academic skill-building, career exploration, mentoring, and student health and wellness.

Summer bridge programs are now even more important for incoming students who have had to endure academic, financial, and emotional challenges because of the COVID-19 pandemic. UW System is seeding the expansion of summer bridge programs across the state with an initial $1.3 million investment in these important campus programs. The UW System will be seeking reimbursement with state revenue or federal COVID-19 relief funds and ongoing support for this expanded program.

“Student success is critical to the UW System, and our work starts even before students step foot on campus,” said UW System President Tommy Thompson. “Wisconsin’s high school seniors have demonstrated remarkable resilience as the pandemic has presented additional challenges. We will be there to help those who need it this fall and in the coming years.”

In 2020, Wisconsin’s public universities assisted 1,189 students in their transitions to college. The proposed expansion would provide support to an additional 1,410 students. In addition to the UW System contribution, universities are providing additional financial support with the UW System seeking $2.7 million over all to support the program.

“As we return to a more traditional semester this fall and beyond, we need to build programs that will help all of our students find success, especially those whose academic progress was slowed by the pandemic,” Thompson said. “This expansion of our summer bridge programs will help position our universities to help students who need it over the next several years.”

Connie L. Miller passed away Monday, March 8, 2021 at Mercy Hospital in Janesville

Connie L. Miller passed away Monday March 8, 2021 at Mercy Hospital in Janesville.

She was born on August 3, 1961 in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin to Clifford and Eileen (Stelse) Miller. Connie loved to cook, and her secret ingredient was love. She shared this talent with family and friends and those she served throughout her career most notably at The Glen Assisted Living. She was a natural caregiver which translated into her daily life. She was compassionate and caring, she loved her co-workers and the residents she cared for. Connie enjoyed a good makeover and home renovation project and was often inspired by the home-makeover shows she watched. Connie enjoyed being outdoors and nature. She would often find pleasure and relaxation by “taking a ride” to enjoy the beauty of the Wisconsin seasons. Her deepest love and greatest passion were her children and grandchildren; she was a devoted mother and grandmother. She loved unconditionally, listened and supported them as they navigated their way through young adulthood and becoming parents themselves. In her later years, Connie was reunited with her young love, Duane Smith. There is comfort in knowing that they are once again together and able to fully enjoy each other.

She will be deeply missed by her family, children Brooke Miller of Sun Prairie, Jonathon Jacobs of Whitewater. Stepdaughter Ashley Bush of Virginia. Mother Eileen Miller of Whitewater. Grandchildren, Aaliyah Crawford, Carter Jacobs, Juliet Jacobs, Cantley Busch, Amelia Busch, Lincoln Busch. Sisters Diane Brunette of Janesville, Donna (Wayne) Tyler of Fort Atkinson, Cindy (Rob) Channing of Whitewater, Denise Higgins of Whitewater. She is preceded in death by her Father, her fiancé, Duane Smith, Brother-in-laws Rex Higgins and Tom Brunette.

The family will plan a celebration of Connie’s life at a later date.

Nitardy Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences can be made at www.nitardyfuneralhome.com.

March 14, 2021

At the School Board candidate forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters on March 13, it was announced that Andrea M. Svec would not be participating due to having decided not to actively pursue a seat on the board. The ballot will still include her name in addition to Tom Ganser, Larry Kachel, and Maryann Zimmerman.

In her response to the www.vote411.org candidate questionnaire, Andrea Svec stated, “Due to unforeseen circumstances, I will not actively be pursuing a seat on the Whitewater school board for 2021. I look forward to renewing my efforts for a 2022 seat. Thank you for your support and understanding.”

Results of the February 16 primary election were:

Tom Ganser – 534; Larry Kachel – 488; Maryann Zimmerman – 461; Andrea M. Svec – 233; Jakub Fadrowski – 56

In the general election on April 6, the two candidates with the highest votes will be elected. Absentee ballots are expected to be mailed early this week. It should be noted that the request for absentee ballots is only valid for a calendar year, unless the voter indicated that they are “indefinitely confined.”

UW-Madison and UW-W offer Virtual Lecture on 3/30: “Cacophony: How Disinformation, Distraction, and the Heckler’s Veto Undermine Collective Thought”

(UW-Whitewater submission) The UW-Madison Tommy G. Thompson Center on Public Leadership and UW-Whitewater are pleased to welcome Siva Vaidhyanathan for a virtual lecture, “Cacophony: How Disinformation, Distraction, and the Heckler’s Veto Undermine Collective Thought” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 30.

This virtual lecture is free and open to public.  Please visit https://thompsoncenter.wisc.edu/events/ for details on how to attend.

A cultural historian, media scholar, and lecturer, Vaidhyanathan serves as the Robertson Professor of Media Studies and the director of the Center for Media and Citizenship at the University of Virginia. He is a frequent contributor on media and cultural issues on public radio shows and news programs, notably the BBC, CNN and NBC. Siva has also authored several books, including The Googlization of Everything (And Why We Should Worry) and Antisocial Media: How Facebook Disconnects Us and Undermines Democracy.

His articles have appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian and The Nation. Vaidhyanathan’s current project reflects major societal concerns related to the “global media ecosystem,” but touches on such issues as the prevalence of propaganda and misinformation (and its easy dissemination on social media) which further threatens to undermine democracy and destabilize governments across the world. Moreover, the lecture considers the importance of news and information literacy, which is fundamentally one of the most important issues of our time in an age when expertise and intellectualism is under attack.
