WUSD Rebrands Youth Apprenticeship Program

Editor’s note: The following information was provided by the Whitewater Unified School District.

The Whitewater Unified School District (WUSD) has expanded their Youth Apprenticeship Program, which allows students the chance to gain work experience in career fields of interest to them.

In coordination with local businesses in the City of Whitewater, WUSD has worked to develop a program for the upcoming summer and school year that offers high school students ages 16-18 real life experience in jobs they are interested in.  During the 2022 spring semester, the Whitewater Unified School District will host a career fair on January 19th where students can discuss apprenticeship opportunities with local employers.

To aid students as much as possible, Whitewater High School will assist students in building resumes, maintaining proper work etiquette, and hosting mock interviews.  There will then be a follow-up job fair on March 16th which will give students the opportunity to go through the hiring process with businesses of their choice.

The WUSD Career Fair is set for January 19th, 2022 from 5-7 p.m. and the WUSD Job Fair is set for March 16th, 2022 from 2-4 p.m. Both will take place at Whitewater High School.

“Our goal is to empower and engage students to start thinking about their future,” said Family/Community Engagement Coordinator, Molly Fuller. “The Youth Apprenticeship Program is a great way to let students test out different job paths and give them an advantage when it comes to college applications and future job searches.”

Once hired for their apprenticeship, students will begin training through the high school from March up until work begins on June 1st. Typically, youth in this program will work at their job of choice for about eight hours per week, completing roughly 450 hours in a year.

The WUSD is dedicated to making sure this process is equally beneficial for both the youth and the businesses that participate. To ensure students are providing their best efforts, the high school will be consistently contacting employers for updates on students’ performance.

The Youth Apprenticeship Program will continue to grow over the next few years and will eventually provide younger students with opportunities to get them thinking about their career at an earlier age. The WUSD will continue to allow extra accommodations for anyone interested in this program, and urge as many students as possible to take advantage of this opportunity.

#FlashbackFriday with the Whitewater Historical Society: G. Stuart’s Mens Shop

It’s time once again for #FlashbackFriday with the Whitewater Historical Society.

This week we are featuring G. Stuart’s Mens Shop in this mid-1990s photo by George Scharfenberg. This storefront, constructed in 1892, housed long-term hardware stores and men’s clothing stores.

Many people probably remember this as the location of Art Lein’s men’s store. Art Lein began his store in 1959 out near the Hawk bowling alley, but soon moved to downtown. He operated his store until 1980. After remaining a men’s store, the storefront was absorbed into the Double Dip Deli in 1999 (now Rosa’s).

In the first half of the 20th century, this was the location of Baker Hardware and Keiser & Tubb’s Hardware (1894-c.1940). Many stores came and went quickly in downtown Whitewater, but the three storefronts we have featured this month housed some of the city’s most long-time businesses.

Wrestlers Bring Home the Gold from Mt Horeb

On Saturday morning, December 18, the Whippet Varsity Wrestling Team was up bright and early to travel to Mount Horeb to participate in their annual invitational. This is a very nice tournament for the team as it is a mix of teams that they see, but also some new looks. When the day came to an end, just before sundown, Whitewater was awarded the Team Championship, finishing just ahead of a very good Verona team.

Individually, the team wrestled very well. Although we always have some we’d like back, everyone battled back and finished strong, not thinking about the result if it did not go their way, but rather looking forward at doing the best that they could to finish as high as they could individually in the tournament.

Leading the way for Whitewater were the Friend brothers. Neither of them were a friend to their opponents as they both won their respective weight classes in dominate fashion. Connor finished the day 3-0 with 3 pins, and Carter finished the day with a record of 4-0 with a bye, 2 pins, and a dominating 14-5 victory in the finals. Along the way Carter had an eight-second pin!

Coming up just shy in the finals were Marcus DePorter and Sebastian Cuellar, each coming in runner-up respectively. Both of these student-athletes were lower seeds in the tournament on paper but as we talk about we don’t worry about seeds, we just worry about wrestling the match, and that is exactly what both of them did on their way to a 3-1 record on the day.

Bringing home the bronze for the Whippets included Jarvis Porcaro, Aaron Porras, and Scott Krebs. Nice job to these young men. Jarvis was wrestling a weight class over where he will be and it showed against a couple guys. Both Aaron and Scott wrestled above their on-paper seeds, wrestling very well.

The coaching staff is very excited about where the team is heading as they continue to work hard and make gains each day. As we enter the winter break, the Varsity is looking forward to the famous Mid-States tournament held on the UWW campus and hosted by WHS. This is a great opportunity to see where we sit among the best competition in our weight classes leading into the second half of the season after break.

126- Conner Friend took 1st

Mary Hardin-Baylor, which knocked the Warhawks out of NCAA Division III championship contention last week, beat defending champion North Central on Friday, December 17 with a score of 57-24 to win the Stagg Bowl in Canton, Ohio. Mary Hardin-Baylor also won the national title in 2016 and 2018. Since there was no 2020 tournament because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Crusaders have now lifted the trophy in three of the last five seasons. Click here for a full report on ncaa.com.

#FlashbackFriday with the Historical Society: Reynolds Pharmacy

It’s time once again for #FlashbackFriday with the Whitewater Historical Society.

Today’s post features another mid-1990s photo taken by George Scharfenberg. It is the Reynolds Pharmacy, located in a building that housed a pharmacy for 120 years. Built in 1883, the storefront first opened as A.V. Burke’s drug store (1883-1893), then housed the Duffin drug store for over 50 years (1893-1945). Clarence Krahnke operated his drug store here from 1945 to 1968, when he sold it to Jim Underwood, who sold it to Dan Reynolds in 1986. Reynolds remained here until 2004 before relocating to the west side.

Join us again next week for another 1990s look at a downtown Whitewater storefront.

Candidates Sought for Three Common Council Positions

By Al Stanek
Whitewater Banner volunteer staff
whitewaterbanner@gmail.com

Residents of the City of Whitewater have an opportunity to have a positive impact on their community as candidates are being sought for three Common Council positions.

The seven-member Common Council has three seats up for election in April with nomination papers due by January 4.

Common Council representation is designed with one individual representing each of five different geographic areas that are elected by just residents of that individual area as well as two “at-large” council members that are elected by a citywide vote. In April voters will elect one of the two at-large members and council representatives for District 2 and 4. Information on district boundaries is available from the City Clerk’s office at (262) 473-0102 or at msmith@whitewater-wi.gov . The City Clerk’s office can also explain the paperwork and circulation of signature requirements which are slightly different for the citywide at-large position than for the individual numbered district spots.

A name that will NOT be appearing on the ballot in April for the first time in 14 years is that of current District 4 member Lynn Binnie. Binnie, the current Common Council president, indicated in November that he had decided not to seek reelection. To date only one potential candidate for District 4, Jill Gerber, has taken out nomination paperwork, which she has completed.

At-large member Jim Allen has taken out nomination paperwork, as has Lukas Scrieber, who was appointed in July to fill a vacancy in District 2. As of December 17, City Clerk Michele Smith indicated that no one else had taken out paperwork for either of those positions.

Any resident interested in serving on the Common Council is encouraged to contact the City Clerk’s office well in advance of the January 4 deadline for submitting nomination papers. Council members are elected for two-year terms beginning in April. Evening meetings are on the first and third Tuesdays of each month and Common Council members also serve on various city boards and commissions that meet less frequently. A stipend of $300 per month is provided to council members.
