WHS Tennis earns success at Rock Valley Conference Tournament

[text-blocks id=”1611″ slug=”bob-mischka”]

From Coach Nelson:

On Thursday, Sept. 20, the Whitewater Girls’ Tennis Team competed in the Rock Valley Conference Tennis Tournament. The Whippets entered the tournament in 4th place and exited the tournament in 2nd place. The team had a fantastic evening with every girl on the team either holding or finishing higher than their pre-tournament seed. Whitewater placed players in the finals of five of the seven positions.

Cassidy Laue, at three singles, and Katelyn Partoll, at four singles, each took home Conference Championships. The girls had to defeat at least one player that they had lost to earlier in the season to capture the title.

Sydney Treder, at one singles, Odessa Sonn and Sophie Olson, at one doubles, and Marissa Mueller and Tessa Papcke, at three doubles, all finished second in the tournament.  In reaching the finals, Odessa and Sophie had to defeat a team that they had lost to earlier in the season.

Whitewater’s results were a true team effort as every player won at least one match to provide points to the Whippets’ 27-point total. The Whippets finished second behind Conference Champion East Troy’s 29 points.

Whitewater has one more nonconference match this Monday, Sept. 24, at WHS against Beloit Memorial as they prepare for sub-sectional play the following Monday, October 1.

Sculpture Iron Pour at UW-Whitewater

The Department of Art and Design hosts its annual Iron Pour on Saturday, September 29 from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm with most of the activity happening between 11:00 am – 2:00 pm in the Sculpture Studio CA 1036. Each fall semester, the Sculpture students at UW-Whitewater work together to create a spectacular iron pour event to present to the University, as well as, the community. Schools from all around the region are invited to participate.

The students work for weeks to break iron bathtubs and radiators into Doritos-sized bits so that those bits can be melted down and poured out into molds to create iron sculptures. Not only do the students get to make work for their own class projects, but the iron pour also acts as a fund-raiser for other events throughout the semester such as bringing in visiting artists, or taking regional field trips. The community is invited to purchase sand molds, called scratch blocks, so that they can create their own designs and, after watching the pour, can go home with their very own iron tile!

The event is free and open to everyone. It will take place this semester on Saturday, Sept 29 with most of the action taking place between 11 am and 2 pm. Come and go as you please or stay for the day. Scratch blocks can be purchased anytime from the Sculpture studio, CA1036, up until 10 am, Sept 29. Krystoffer Sebastian Dortch, 25 of Whitewater, died on September 15, 2018.

He entered this world on March 4, 1993, which was his due date. It is also the last time he agreed to follow directions set by someone else. He was a beautiful, vivacious energy with an infectious light that has touched so many lives.  Krys was the kind of person who people fell in love with. From the moment he was born, he was able to capture the hearts of others just by giving them a look and a smile. He cared about people, loved animals and wanted to be the best he could be.

He could never seem to see in himself the things the rest of the world did. He was always apologizing for one thing or another, admitting that he made mistakes and not giving himself credit. This was until he found out he was going to be a father. The birth of his son, Alex, was the one thing in his life he never once apologized for. He was proud to be a father and decided he was going to be a positive factor in his son’s life. He began working for John’s Disposal Service and experienced great success. He was the guy the other drivers would fight over because of how hard he would work. He was finally able to show himself what he was capable of and finally experience personal pride.

Krystoffer is survived by his son, Alex Dortch; girlfriend, Amber Nerge; mother, Tammy Olson; father, Geoffrey Dortch; sister, Sierra Dortch; brother, Kaleb Dortch; paternal grandparents, Neil Dortch and Faye (Jon) Enriquez; maternal grandparents, Ken Olson and Dale (James) O’Donnell; 3 aunts; 2 uncles and several cousins.

He was loved by many people and will be greatly missed.

A private gathering will be held at a later time.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alex Dortch Benefit Fund, which has been established at PremierBank for his two year old son.

Dunlap Memorial Home in Fort Atkinson is assisting the family.
