Robert “Bob” Rowley, 87, of Whitewater, a former resident of Addison, Ill., passed away Tuesday, July 9, 2019.

He went peacefully with his wife and son by his side.

Bob was born on March 25, 1932.

He graduated Crane Tech High School in Chicago, Ill., in 1950.

Bob joined the U.S. Air Force as a basic airman in February 1952 and married his high school sweetheart, Thora “Billie” Rowley, on May 17, 1952. After his honorable discharge from the Air Force, Bob worked with Harlo Electric Supply and then General Electric.

After retiring, Bob and Billie moved to Whitewater in 1996. In retirement Bob enjoyed golfing whenever the weather permitted.

He was a member at the local golf club, Prairie Woods, and golfed regularly with his son, grandson and great-grandson. He left us less than 24 hours after playing a round with his son and grandson.

If he wasn’t golfing, Bob was swimming at the Whitewater Aquatic Center with Billie. His youthful spirit and abundant love made him a favorite of all his 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Bob is survived by his wife, Thora; his son, Thomas (Doreen); his grandchildren, Melissa (Jason) Grooms, Michele (Shannon) Fagiano, Aaron (Amanda) Rowley, Corin (Bob) Sullivan, Brandon (Rowena) Rowley, Kristin (Mark) Porter, Colin (Brittany) Rowley, Erica Clemmons, Kristina (Kevin) Bannon, Veronica (Steven) De La Cruz, Greg Barnwell Jr. and Robert Callen; and great-grandchildren, Will, Riley, Grace, Quinn, Emmett, Michael, Abigail, Emeline, Oliver, Calvin, Sadie, Londyn, Kenzie, Traver Jr., Madelyn, Ashlyn, Steven, Nathaniel and Elijah.

He was preceded in death and welcomed in heaven by his two children, his eldest son Jim and daughter Lynn.

A celebration of life will be held at Prairie Woods Golf Course on Saturday, July 13, from 2 to 6 p.m.

A note from the Whitewater 4th of July Festival Committee

Whitewater is truly a spectacular community in which to live. One need look no further than the 4th of July Festival as it wraps up to see that. On behalf of the Whitewater 4th of July Committee, thank you for making this community what it is.

Hundreds of volunteers each year spend months of their time, often take time off work, and put countless hours into each part of this event. To those who consistently show that dedication, thank you will never be enough. To the dozens of city employees who are often shoulder to shoulder with volunteers, please know this would not be possible without your support either. We also are grateful for the generosity of all those who donate financially to the support of this festival; your commitment to the community which often extends far past this festival is humbling.

As a committee at this time of year we always find ourselves inundated with suggestions. We welcome every single one. Suggestions only make this festival better for all of us. We also welcome you to join us as a committee member or volunteer as you are able to assist with next year’s festival. Please contact us for additional information; we would love to start that conversation with you.

If you have great photos of this year’s event, please don’t hesitate to send those our way; we’ll update our website in the next week or two to feature as many of those images as we can, and you can always email us at whitewater4th@gmail.com.

Once again we thank you for celebrating our nation’s independence with us, supporting the organizations that make up our food and beverage vendors, and for continuing Whitewater’s rich 4th of July traditions this year.

Kindly submitted by,

Lisa Dawsey Smith

A note from the UWW Community Optimist Club regarding the Gyro Stand at the 4th of July Festival

The members of the UW-W Community Optimist Club want to thank you for the years that you have supported our Gyro Stand at the Whitewater 4th of July Celebration! From the beginning of our club in 1981 (at that time the Whitewater Optimist Club) the gyro stand has been a good source of funding for the programs we support along with a wonderful interaction with members of the community.

Unfortunately, the stand will not be at the Cravath Lakefront this year. The club can no longer meet the demands of this effort, and we are sorry to miss the Festival.

As a service club, we welcome new members and volunteers so that we can continue offering community events such as Youth Appreciation Week, Breakfast with Santa, the Toys for Kids program, the Easter Egg Hunt and the Free Fishing Day. We also provide support for the Whitewater School District Emergency Fund, the Whitewater Food Pantry and other programs for the kids of Whitewater.

Please consider joining our club! You can find more information on-line at: https://blogs.uww.edu/uwwcommunityoptimist/ or contact any of our members. We welcome your questions and support.
