Whitewater Unified School District Partnership with Gateway Technical College’s Transcripted Credit Program Saves Students Money

Presenting Whitewater High School teacher Mike Wintz with a plaque is District Administrator Mark Elworthy.

The Transcripted Credit program allows high school students to earn both high school and Gateway credit at the same time. The Gateway courses are taught here at Whitewater High School by high school staff, using the same Gateway materials and curriculum that is used at the technical college campus. The high school staff works closely with Gateway faculty mentors to provide Whitewater students the same opportunities and success as the students on campus. Whitewater High School students are given the option to register for the Gateway credit, which many of them choose to do.

This year, 17 students at Whitewater High School earned Gateway credit, saving the students a total of $5,418.58.

Common Council Candidate Forum Scheduled for March 10

The League of Women Voters, Whitewater Area would like to invite the community to a Forum in which candidates for Common Council express their views on important topics of concern before the April 3rd Spring Election.  The Forum will take place on Saturday, March 10, 10AM-11:30 AM, in the Whitewater City Hall Council Chambers.  League member Tom Drucker will moderate the Forum, which will be broadcast live by Whitewater Community TV and made available for viewing in the weeks leading up to Election Day.  Candidates for Common Council in the April 3rd Spring Election are as follows:

Aldermanic District 2:  James Schulgit, incumbent

Aldermanic District 4:  Lynn Binnie, incumbent

Councilmember at Large:  Jim Allen, incumbent, and Brienne Diebolt-Brown

The League’s Candidate Forum is a free public event where voters are invited to ask questions of the candidates on issues of importance to their daily lives and the Whitewater community.  Although only the Councilmember At-Large seat is contested, the League invited the uncontested candidates to share their views as well.  However, should either one of the two candidates running for the At-Large seat choose not to participate, the forum will be canceled. The League has a long tradition of not supporting “empty-chair” debates or forums because any candidate in a contested race, who appears alone, has the distinct advantage of presenting partisan views and comments without challenge.

Also, a Candidate Questionnaire, developed by the League board, will be distributed to Common Council candidates on Friday, February 23, 2018. Completed questionnaires will be posted on the League’s website, www.lwvwhitewater.org, by the end of the day, Monday, March 12.
