Warhawks Football 41-28 Over Wartburg (IA); Moving on to 3rd Round Against Mary Hardin-Baylor on 12/7 (UPDATED with game details)

In Second Round play Wartburg came back on 11/30 from a 31-7 halftime score to give the Warhawks a challenge in the second half, but UW-W prevailed with 41-28. Mary Hardin-Baylor (MHB) beat Huntingdon 42-6 to face the Warhawks on 12/7 (location TBA) in the NCAA Division III 3rd Round. In 2018 MHB beat UW-W by 31-14 in a Semifinal game and went on to win the championship over Mount Union.

By the way, Mount Union, the record-holding winner of 13 championships, was eliminated by North Central (IL) by a score of 59-52 in the Second Round.

No. 7 Warhawks Advance to NCAA Quarterfinals (Update 12/2/19)

The No. 7 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater football team engineered a big first half and hung on in the second half Saturday for a 41-28 triumph over Wartburg (Iowa) in the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship at Perkins Stadium.

The Warhawks (11-1 overall) advance to the national quarterfinals for the 13th time in the last 15 years and will face No. 1 ranked Mary Hardin-Baylor (Texas) next Saturday, Dec. 7 at Belton, TX.

UW-Whitewater held Wartburg (10-2) to 32 yards rushing and forced five turnovers in the contest.

Senior running back Jarrod Ware rushed for 58 yards, and junior tight end Jared Zausch posted four receptions for 41 yards. Senior running back Ronny Ponick rushed for 31 yards and one touchdown and caught a 12-yard touchdown.

Senior linebacker Matt Anderson tallied a team-high eight tackles, including one sack, and one interception. Junior linebacker Kaleb Kaminski registered four tackles, including one for a loss, and added one forced fumble and two interceptions.

The Warhawks’ special teams made several big plays during the game, including a punt return for a touchdown, five kickoff returns for 146 yards, two made field goals and five punts for an average of 41.6 yards, including three inside the Knights’ 20-yard line.

Senior defensive back Garrett Purdy posted an interception on Wartburg’s first drive of the game, and UW-Whitewater took advantage of the good field position.

Five plays after a 26-yard completion from junior quarterback Max Meylor to junior wide receiver Derek Kumerow, junior running back Alex Peete dove over the pile at the goal line for a 1-yard touchdown with 9:17 on the clock.

The Warhawks doubled the lead two minutes later, taking advantage of a forced fumble by Kaminski. Ware ran down to the Knights’ 12-yard line, and Ponick caught a screen pass for a 12-yard score.

After a three-and-out, UW-Whitewater added to its lead on a 36-yard field goal by junior kicker Wojciech Gasienica with 2:37 to play in the first quarter.

After a Wartburg touchdown, the Warhawks responded. Junior wide receiver Ryan Wisniewski returned the ensuing kickoff 46 yards, then threw a 26-yard pass to Zausch on a reverse pass. Three plays later, Meylor ran around the right side for a 4-yard touchdown at the 11:32 mark.

Following a three-and-out by the Knights, senior Justin Prostinak went untouched on the punt return 67 yards for the touchdown and a 31-7 advantage with 9:21 remaining in the first half.

UW-Whitewater was the first on the board in the third quarter as Gasienica knocked a 27-yard field goal through the uprights with 9:50 to play. The drive was keyed by Wisniewski’s 38-yard return to near midfield.

Wartburg scored on the next drive to cut its deficit to 34-14, but the Warhawks took advantage of strong field position again later in the quarter. Three plays after a key third-down completion from Meylor to sophomore wide receiver Tyler Holte, Ponick pushed up the middle for a 1-yard touchdown and a 41-14 lead with 2:27 left in the period.

The Knights tacked on touchdowns on their next two drives and had the ball in UW-W territory just past the midway point of the fourth quarter, but Kaminski picked off Noah Dodd at the Warhawks’ 27-yard line.

After a UW-Whitewater punt to the Wartburg 9-yard line, Kaminski registered his second interception of the quarter and returned it to the Knights’ 14-yard line. From there, the Warhawks knelt out the final two minutes of regulation.

Next Saturday’s game against Mary Hardin-Baylor is a rematch of the 2018 national semifinal, which the Crusaders won 31-14 in Belton, Texas.

Elizabeth Jane “Betty” Frawley, 88, died November 28, 2019

Elizabeth Jane “Betty” Frawley, 88, died November 28 at Fairhaven in Whitewater. Betty was born May 4, 1931, at home on a dairy farm in Bassett, Wisconsin, to Henry and Tillie Nienhaus.

Betty graduated from Wilmot High School, attended Racine-Kenosha Teachers College in Union Grove, State Normal Teachers School in Whitewater and earned a degree from UW-Whitewater with magna cum laude honor. Betty first taught school in a one room schoolhouse in Bassett and then in a two room schoolhouse in Twin Lakes. On October 16, 1954, Betty married John H. Frawley at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Wilmot, Wisconsin.

Betty substitute taught for many years in Whitewater and the surrounding area. Eventually she taught 6th grade at Washington Elementary in Whitewater. While teaching, Betty’s other job was bookkeeping for her husband. After retiring from teaching she worked at Frawley Oil Co., Inc. where she was a full partner. Betty took great pride in her job and thrived at working until April of 2019.

In 1995, Betty was a founding director of the Whitewater Community Foundation. The purpose was to provide high school students a mechanism to receive scholarships for college. The foundation has grown to sponsor various community cultural and charitable programs.

Surviving are Son: Michael J. (Jo Anne) Frawley, Whitewater, Daughter: Ellen K. Hartley, Anna, TX. Grandchildren: Paula Frawley, Rockford, IL, Justin Astin, Whitewater, Philip (Jeanette) Frawley, Ixonia, Brian (Danielle) Frawley, Whitewater, Holley (Scott) Hartley Tiemann, Melissa, TX, and William (Devon) Hartley, Anna, TX. Sister: Dorothy (Stanley) Kerkman, Waterford. Great-grandchildren: Trinity, Regan, Audrey, Brady, Peyton, Harrison, Levi, and Britta. Betty was preceded in death by her husband Jack Frawley, parents, sister Eleanor Ketterhagen, brother Leon Nienhaus and son-in-law Gary Hartley.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, December 4th, at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 1225 W. Main Street, Whitewater, Wisconsin, with Father Mark Niehaus celebrating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Whitewater, Wisconsin. Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. on Tuesday, December 3rd, at Nitardy Funeral Home, 550 N. Newcomb Street, Whitewater, Wisconsin.

Memorials may be made to the Whitewater Community Foundation or Fairhaven Senior Services.

Warhawk Football to Host 2nd Round NCAA Playoffs

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater football team will host Wartburg (Iowa) in the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship this Saturday, Nov. 30, at 12 p.m. at Perkins Stadium.

Tickets for Saturday’s game will be available on site starting 90 minutes prior to kickoff. Cost of admission is $13 for adults and $8 for students, senior citizens and children ages 3-12. No passes will be accepted for admission. Season parking holders with spots in Lot 24 will be honored for Saturday’s game and for any other postseason contests.

The Warhawks (10-1 overall) advanced to the second round with a 35-10 victory over Midwest Conference champion Monmouth (Ill.) in the first round last Saturday at Perkins Stadium.

The Knights (10-1) posted a 41-3 victory at Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association champion Hope (Mich.) last Saturday to punch their ticket to the second round.

Both UW-Whitewater and Wartburg were Pool C, or at-large, qualifiers to the NCAA Playoffs.

Robert Howard Wright, age 100, of Whitewater, died November 12, 2019

Robert Howard Wright, age 100, died November 12, 2019 at Fairhaven in Whitewater, Wisconsin. He
was born in Chicago, IL October 12, 1919 to Howard B and Mary A (Ramsgard) Wright. He grew up in
Glen Ridge, NJ. He attended Cornell University and was also involved in Army ROTC. In 1942, after
graduation, he was enlisted in the Army as a First Lieutenant. After boot camp, he married Connie Mae
Hollister on August 18 in her parents’ home in Painted Post, NY. He was stationed in Fort Sill, OK where
he taught new recruits shooting techniques. He went to Denton TX for a short time before being
shipped to England in 1944. He spent the rest of his service time fighting in WWII in Europe. He was in
Belgium when the war ended.


After the war, he worked for the US Graphite Company while living in Syracuse NY with his wife and 2
daughters. After 4 years, he was transferred to Wisconsin, settling in Pewaukee. He eventually started
his own business as a sales representative. He retired in 1988 and so moving to a cabin on the
Millecoquins River in Naubinway, MI in the upper Peninsula.


In 1989, he met up with Marguerite (Powell) Asher whom he had known for a long time in Pewaukee.
They were married in October, 1989 and he eventually settled Royal Oak, MI where Marguerite and her
daughter, Elizabeth were living. They had a wonderful time together, wintering in Florida until
Marguerite died in 2001. He had become close to his stepdaughter, Elizabeth Asher, and they decided
to live together. They eventually moved to Whitewater, WI in 2002 as that was where Marguerite and
Elizabeth’s roots were. Many winters were spent in Naples, FL.


He was an avid golfer and didn’t mind sharing his secrets with Elizabeth and daughter, Sandy. He also
was an accomplished watercolor artist starting lessons at age 50. His works are displayed at Elizabeth’s
condo and with other family members. Bob was a gentle, kind soul who was revered by all of his
extended family and community members. He was smart and influential with those who would listen
and take his advice. His quick wit kept all laughing.


He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard B and Mary A (Ramsgard) Wright, his first wife
Connie M (Hollister) Wright, and second wife, Marguerite (Powell) Wright, his 2 sisters, Dorothy (Wright)
Hockenberger Galley of Oconomowoc and Michigan, and Barbara J (Wright) Fisher of NJ and N. Carolina.
He is survived by his daughters, Sandra L (Wright) Schaefer of Hot Springs Village, AR, Connie Jean
Wright of Tomah, WI and stepdaughter, Elizabeth M Asher of Whitewater, WI, and his two Grandsons of
Minneapolis, MN: Bradley John and Bruce Robert Berge. Elizabeth was his caregiver for many years as
his health declined. She was his social partner for 18 years and is credited, in part, for his long, enjoyable
life.


There will be no ceremony at this time. His ashes were buried in Hillside Cemetery. There will be a
service in the spring, to include Military Honors.

The No. 7 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater football team scored 28 first-half points Saturday afternoon on its way to a 35-10 triumph over Monmouth (Ill.) in the first round of the NCAA Division III Championship at Perkins Stadium.

The Warhawks (10-1 overall) advance to the second round, where they’ll face Wartburg (Iowa) next Saturday, Nov. 30, 12 p.m. CST, Perkins Stadium.

UW-Whitewater picked up 28 first downs and totaled 478 yards of offense, including 278 on the ground. The team also held the ball for nearly 39 minutes in the contest.

The Warhawks’ defense held the Fighting Scots (7-3) to six first downs and 172 total yards, including zero on the ground.

Junior Max Meylor completed 16 or 26 passes for 183 yards and 4 TDs.


Junior quarterback Max Meylor (Mt. Horeb, Wis./Mt. Horeb) registered 183 yards and four touchdowns through the air and added 34 yards on the ground. Senior running back Jarrod Ware (Bradley, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais) posted 20 carries for 110 yards, and junior running back Alex Peete (Ringwood, Ill./Johnsburg) rushed 16 times for 80 yards and one touchdown. Junior wide receiver Ryan Wisniewski (Sparta, Wis./Sparta) collected six receptions for 67 yards and two scores.

Junior Jarrod Ware rushed 20 times for 110 yards.

Senior linebacker Matt Anderson (Rockford, Ill./Lutheran) led the defense with seven tackles. Senior defensive lineman Jordan Brand (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita) recorded four tackles, including two sacks, and senior defensive back Nate Tranel (Lancaster, Wis./Lancaster) made five stops, including one for a loss.

UW-Whitewater got on the board first, taking advantage of field position at the Monmouth 44-yard line. Meylor hit Wisniewski on a 13-yard pass with 2:40 left in the first quarter.

After the Fighting Scots fumbled the ensuing kickoff, Meylor hit Peete on a 26-yard screen pass to double the advantage to 14-0 with 2:24 on the clock.

Meylor completed his third touchdown of the day two minutes into the second quarter, hitting junior wide receiver Derek Kumerow (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) with an 11-yard strike to complete a seven-play, 66-yard drive.

Following a Monmouth punt, the Warhawks drove 72 yards in 13 plays to make it 28-0 with 8:21 remaining. Peete completed the set with a 3-yard touchdown run.

The Fighting Scots got on the board early in the second half on a touchdown with 12:02 left in the third quarter.

On the first play of the next drive, Meylor found Wisniewski for a 52-yard touchdown to make it 35-7 with 11:41 to go in the quarter.

Monmouth completed the scoring on a field goal five minutes into the fourth quarter. UW-Whitewater held the ball for more than 10 minutes in the period to run the clock down.

WHS Players Present “The Little Mermaid,” Thurs. through Sunday

Ralph Gordon Mundinger, 89, of West Bend received his offer to heaven on Tuesday, November 19, 2019.

Ralph Gordon Mundinger, 89, of West Bend received his offer to heaven on Tuesday, November 19, 2019 to head off to the major leagues. Upon hearing this news and with unbelievable emotion, his family cheered him knowing he is going to have the game of his life and that they’ll all catch up with him down the road.

Ralph was born on February 1, 1930 in Fort Frances, Ontario, Canada and grew up in Whitewater, Wisconsin. After proudly serving in the United States Air Force (603 A/C Squadron), he attended the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater where he received his B.A./M.A. After graduating Ralph taught in Warren IL, Livingston WI, and St. John’s Military Academy before coming to West Bend. Ralph taught Business Education at the high school and coached multiple sports from 1961-1992.

Ralph’s greatest gift was his ability to help you understand your potential and ability to reach your goals through hard work not only in sports, but in everyday life. He also taught the importance of learning from your mistakes and quickly moving forward. Over the years, he cherished the success stories of those he invested in. The updates were priceless. Ralph leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving and caring wife, Sally; his devoted children, Jay (Kim), Mark (Julie) and DeAnn (Joe) Seaman. Papa to: Jase, Sally (David) Syzdek, Charlie, Jack, Daniel, and Lydia; Nicholas (Brittany), Molly, Mark II, Darren and Cassady; Ben, Michael, and George Seaman; and great-grandsons, Lincoln and Oliver. He is further survived by a sister-in-law, Barbara Larson; nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

A “Celebration of Ralph’s Life” will be held at Kettlebrook Church on Saturday, November 23, 2019 at 12:00 p.m.(NOON). Visitation will be at Church from 10:00 a.m. until time of the service. There will be a private inurnment at Washington County Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight or West Bend Columns Scholarship.
