Daylight Savings Time ends this Sunday, November 1st at 2:00 a.m. In 2022 the U.S. Senate approved a bill known as the Sunshine Protection Act to make daylight saving time permanent nationwide. But the legislation stalled in the House, as there was debate about whether to make standard or daylight time permanent. Every year since there have been attempts to address the subject in legislation.
In July 2026, the House of Representatives passed the Sunshine Protection Act with bipartisan support, which would have ended the twice‑yearly clock change and kept daylight saving time in effect year‑round. President Donald Trump has publicly backed the measure, and it was sent to the Senate. However, the Senate adjourned without voting on it. Polls show 56% of Americans support permanent daylight saving time, 42% prefer permanent standard time, and 12% favor the current twice‑yearly system. Among the reasons that have been given for opposing permanent daylight savings time is that the early morning darkness in the winter would be unsafe for children waiting for a bus or walking to school.
