#FlashbackFriday with the Historical Society: The Van Voorhes crypt c.1900

It’s time once again for #FlashbackFriday with the Whitewater Historical Society.

Happy Halloween tomorrow!!

What’s more spooky than a cemetery crypt? This is a c.1900 view of the Van Voorhes crypt in Hillside Cemetery. It was completed in November of 1890 for Henry Van Voorhes, who died in August of that year at the age of 53. The Whitewater Register noted that the stone came from Waukesha quarries and that it had a capacity for 10 caskets.

Van Voorhes was a prominent businessman and was responsible for building the first Whitewater Armory Building at 202-206 Whitewater Street (the building with the large mansard roof) in 1887. The armory was located under the unusual roof and served the local guard unit until the 1940s when the Armory on North Street was completed.

Join us next week for more from the Whitewater Historical Society.
