WHS JV track and field compete in Lake Geneva

Comments from Coach Howers:

The JV track and field teams went to Lake Geneva for a 7 team invite yesterday.  The kids performed well, with a number of kids getting personal bests.

The girls’ team brought home all the hardware.  The highest finishes were Grace Black in the 100m dash, and the 4×200 relay team of Amanda Tovar, Catherine Skingdingsrude, Kathryn Donner and Cassidy Pinkowski.  Amanda Tovar also took third in the pole vault, with a best of 7′ 6″, and was on the third-place 4×100 relay team joining Skingdingsrude, Pinkowski, and Black.

For the boys, the highlights came from Hayden West in the pole vault and Zach Gross in the 200m dash.  Zach finished 5th with a personal best, as did Hayden.

The varsity team travels to Elkhorn tonight in the Walworth County meet.

WHS Track teams compete in Edgerton Tider Invite

[text-blocks id=”1611″ slug=”bob-mischka”]

From Coach Houwers:

The Whippets track and field teams competed at the Edgerton Tider Invite on Friday night.  Spring weather was finally cooperating, giving us a great night to compete.  The teams struggled early on in prelims, advancing just one individual to the finals of the 100, 200, or 100/110 hurdles.  Tyler Sheffield managed to sneak into the 200 finals with the final qualifying spot.  Jack Mayer got out to a great start in the 110 hurdles and looked to be on his way to finals before catching his trail leg on a hurdle mid-race and falling.  As the meet progressed, things did begin to improve, but not enough to prevent finishing in the bottom 3 teams for both the girls and boys teams.  Even without a good team performance, there were some highlights from the competition.

The highlight for the girls’ team came in the technical events.  Sydney Treder finished second with another 8′ 6″ vault in the pole vault.  Freshman Jenna Caldwell tied for 3rd, clearing 8′ 0″ for the first time this season.  Ali Ketterhagen continues to improve in the high jump.  She finished 3rd, clearing 4′ 10″ for the first time in her career.  She looks to hit the 5′ mark as we come into the championship part of the season.  Hailey Murphy dropped 2 seconds off her 300 hurdles race to also finish third.  Her time moves her into the top ten all-time times in the event.

For the boys’ team, Sashi Popke took home to only gold, winning the pole vault.  Aidan Coburn was a bright spot, trying the 1600, 3200 double for the first time.  He proved ready for the task, as he set personal bests in both events, going under the 5 min barrier in the 1600 for the first time.  Jacob Korf impressed to close out the night, running a great split on the 4×400 relay.

This week is a busy week as the JV teams compete Monday and Thursday, and the Varsity goes Tuesday in Elkhorn at the Walworth County meet and again on Saturday at the Conference Championships in Jefferson, beginning at 10 am.

WHS Baseball team wins 3, loses 2 in busy week

Game Recaps by Nate Parrish

April 28, 2018 –   Oconomowoc 5   WHS 2

On Saturday, April 28, the Whippets (6-1) would lose their first game of the season to Division 1 and #7 ranked Oconomowoc by a score of 5-2. Oconomowoc jumped out early by scoring one in the first inning and three more in the 3rdinning. The Whippets would get 1 back in the 4th as Bryce Parrish walked with one out and Jordan Curtis doubled to score Parrish and make the score 4-1, however, Oconomowoc would get one back in the bottom of the 4th to make it 5-1. In the 6th inning, Bryce Parrish would homer to left center to make it 5-2 but that is all they could muster. Jordan Curtis led the hitting 2×3 with a double and an RBI, Bryce Parrish was 1-2 with a home run. Whitewater split the pitching between Hunter Martin, James Dedrick, Bryce Parrish and Jordan Curtis. Hunter Martin took the loss giving up 2 hits, 1 earned run while striking out 3 and walking 1. Coach Pease was disappointed in the loss as the pitchers executed a number of pitches and struck out 10 batters but the defense was not on top of its game while committing 2 errors in the infield, the tricky swirling winds caused the outfielders a few problems. Coach Pease said, “That is something we will need to clean up if we want to reach some of our goals”. The Whitewater batters had an up and down day as they had 6 hits and had several line drives and hard hit balls but had 12 strikeouts. Pease said “this was the first time we had seen a little more velocity this year, we had to make some adjustments as the game went on,  but if we clean up our defense we are right there. Good experience to play Oconomowoc and we need to learn from it”.

April 30, 2018 –   WHS 14   Edgerton 3

The bats came alive on a warm spring evening in Edgerton as Whitewater Whippet baseball team (7-1) beat Edgerton 14-3 to remain in first place in the Rock Valley Conference. James Dedrick started the game out with a bang with a home run over the centerfield fence to give the Whippets a 1-0 lead. Dylan Pease would walk, Bryce Parrish would hit into a fielders choice then steal 2nd. Jimmy Duval would walk and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Jordan Curtis would groundout for an RBI to score Parrish and a 2-0 lead. Edgerton would come right back in the bottom of the first scoring 3 runs but the Whitewater pitchers would settle in after that. In the top of 3rd, Bryce Parrish would double to center and Jordan Curtis would knock him with a double tying the score at 3-3. Cooper Pease would keep the inning going with another single followed by a double by Danny Harnack scoring both runners and a 5-3 lead. Whitewater would add another run in the top of the 4th after a leadoff single by Dylan Pease, he would steal 2nd and Jordan Curtis knocked him with another double to make it 6-3. In the 5th inning Whitewater would strike for 8 runs after the leadoff batter popped up Chris Dedrick singled, Jaden Salmeiri singled, James Dedrick was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Dylan Pease would single scoring 2 runs. Bryce Parrish would hit a hard line drive single to left scoring two more runs. Jimmy Duval followed up with another hard single, Jordan Curtis walked, Parrish scored on a wild pitch, and Cooper Pease doubled to left center to score 2 more and make it 13-3. Sam Wilson would enter the game as a courtesy runner and scored on a wild pitch to make the final score of 14-3. Whitewater would bang out 15 hits led by a number of players – James Dedrick 2×3 with a home run and 1 RBI, Dylan Pease 2×3 2 RBI’s, Bryce Parrish 2×4, double and 2 RBI’s, Jordan Curtis, 2 doubles and 3 RBI’s, Cooper Pease 2×4, double and 2 RBI’s, Jaden Salmeiri 2×3, and Danny Harnack with a double.

James Dedrick improved to 2-0 on the season as he went 3.1 innings giving up 5 hits and 3 runs, while strikeout 5 and 2 walks. Bryce Parrish would finish the game going 1.2 innings allowing no hits, no runs while striking out 3 and 1 walk. Coach Pease was excited to see a lot of players put good swings on the ball and finally find some green space as the hits became contagious and kept coming in the 5th inning to seal the win.

May 1, 2018 –   Big Foot 9   WHS 3

A night after the Whitewater Whippets baseball team (7-2) banged out 15 hits against Edgerton the bats fell silent against Big Foot in losing the first conference game of the year 9-3. Although they still managed 7 hits, they could not get the big hit as they left 7 on base and had a number of great scoring opportunities. James Dedrick led off the game with a double and was left stranded at 3rd to end the top of the first inning, which, unfortunately, was a sign of things to come. In the bottom half of the inning Big Foot took advantage of 4 walks, an error, a bunt single, and a line drive single to take a 4-0 lead. Whitewater would answer in the top of the 2nd as Jordan Curtis led off with a walk and stole second, Chris Dedrick would line a single to center scoring Curtis and advanced to 2nd on the throw. Jaden Salmieri would follow with another single scoring Dedrick to make it 4-2. In the 3rd inning, Whitewater missed a golden opportunity after loading the bases with no outs the next two hitters swung at the first pitch and ground out into fielders choices at home, followed by getting picked off at 1st with a 3-0 count on the batter. Big Foot would add another run in the 3rd to make it 5-2. In the 5thinning Whitewater would get one back after leadoff double by James Dedrick, Bryce Parrish would reach on an error by the shortstop and Jimmy Duval would single home Dedrick to make it 5-3 but both runners were left stranded. Big Foot answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the 5th to maintain a 3 run advantage at 6-3. In the top of the 6th Whitewater had a chance again after both Dedrick brothers were hit by a pitch but were left stranded. Big Foot would tack on 3 more in the bottom of the frame for a 9-3 final score.  James Dedrick led the hitting 2×3 with 2 doubles and Jimmy Duval was 2×4. Hunter Martin took the loss giving up 4 runs, 3 earned on 2 hits and 3 walks. Dylan Pease came in relief going 5.2 innings giving up 8 hits, 5 runs while striking out 4 and walking 4. Chris Dedrick finished out the game facing 1 batter, walking 1, then picking the runner off first to end the 6th.

The loss drops Whitewater into a tie for first place in the Rock Valley conference with 5 teams within 1 game of each other. All of the teams will be facing off over the next two weeks and will become very challenging to manage pitching with many teams playing 3-4 conference games per week. Coach Pease was very disappointed in the loss. Pease said “We need to come out ready to play and throw strikes, we missed the opportunity to grab the lead early, then walk 4 in that first inning, we still had a chance to get out of it but our defense was unable to make a play. If we can hold them there and limit the damage it changes things. Then in the 3rd inning to not get any runs with bases loaded really hurt. We needed better approaches at the plate and need to be smart on the base paths inthose situations”.

Whitewater had 8 hits for the game with Cooper Pease going 3×3 with 1 RBI and Bryce Parrish going 2×3 with a double and 1 RBI. Coach Pease was excited to get the season sweep over Evansville. After a tough loss early in the week the team came back with intensity and was ready to play. Coach Pease said anytime you can win a home and home series against a quality opponent and a team that was picked as one of the preseason favorites in the conference is big for the team and our confidence, now we need to show the consistency the rest of the way and play one pitch at a time.

Next up for the Whippets is Clinton at home on Monday with 1st pitch at 4:45.

WHS track and field freshmen compete in Clinton Invitational

The track and field teams traveled to Clinton yesterday for the Clinton Freshman Invitational.  The meet is a favorite of the freshmen since they get to compete against athletes their own age.  No team scores are kept for the meet as the focus is on the kids getting an opportunity to compete.
The highlight of the night had to be Brianna Staebler taking a huge step forward.  She had personal bests by a number of feet in both the shot and discus, winning both events.  Sophia Fanshaw also had a good day in the shot, setting a personal best as well.  Grace Black was able to compete for the first time this season as she’s recovering from an injury.  It was great to see her back competing.
For the boys, Jovany Manriquez ran a solid 400 in his first ever quarter, finishing 6th overall.  Will Hoffmann poured his guts out running the 1600/3200 double.  He’s one determined young man, and that will prove valuable to him over the years to come.  I’m sure he slept well last night after that tough double.

From Coach Dittmer:

There were not a lot of bright spots in the blowout with the exception of our #2 doubles. They played the best I have seen this season and I believe that they will continue to improve in the final month. I thought they did a great job of communicating with their signals and hit some excellent groundstrokes. I am looking forward to seeing how they finish up the season.

From Coach Dittmer:

Despite losing, Nick Kuzoff played an impressive match at #3 singles. I can really see his improvement from the first day of the season to now. He played a lot of long points and just came up a bit short. Joe Creanza also left it all out on the court in his loss at #2 singles. He hit a lot of really good shots but just made a few too many errors in the end. Even though he lost, I was very proud of his effort. He even got sick during his match but wanted to continue playing. It is great to see that kind of dedication from the Senior.

Whitewater High School track team competes in Fort Invitational

[text-blocks id=”1611″ slug=”bob-mischka”]

From Coach Houwers:

The Whippets tracksters were finally able to get back to running, jumping and throwing last night at the 70th annual Fort Invite. This was their first meet after a string of 5 cancellations due to weather.

There were many highlights on the night. The first on the track was Ignacio Cuevas, running a great anchor leg in the 4×800 relay. It was his first ever 800, and the freshmen responded with a great leg in a pretty tough situation. For the boys, the sprinters had a very good night. Tyler Sheffield and Will Leibbrand finished 1st and 4th in the 100m. The 4×100 relay also took home gold. Sheffield was joined by Jared Clapper, Jack Mayer and Sashi Popke for that relay.

Leibbrand, Clapper, and Mayer are a part of a very solid group of sophomore boys that will play a key role for the team as they approach conference. Juan Cuellar, Tyler Pavlik, Matt Foss, Justin Mitchell, Aiden Coburn, Cody Rupke and Thomas Utynek all contributed last night with great efforts. Many are still learning the nuances of the sport. It’s going to be fun to see that group develop over the rest of the season and for years to come.

On the girls’ side, there were a number of gold medal performances to celebrate. The first came in the girls high jump, with Ali Ketterhagen taking home gold. Her ability and desire to compete has been truly amazing, considering she’s less than a year off knee surgery for a torn ACL.

Hailey Murphy picked up her first ever gold in the 100 hurdles. She had an incredible night, running lifetime bests in all her races. She looks like the real deal, ready to take a big step forward this year. She’s knocking on the door of the top ten lists in both hurdle races.

Sydney Treder isn’t far off the top ten list either. In just her third meet vaulting, she cleared 8’6″ to win the pole vault. The girls 4×100 relay took home the final gold for the ladies. The team of Morgan Wiedenhoeft, Abby Grosinske, Lily Dunklau and Morgan Radaj were able to get the stick around the track the fastest last night. Radaj and Dunklau both claimed silver in their individual sprints as well, competing in the 100m and 200m respectively.

The Whippets have a busy week ahead, with the freshmen meet in Clinton on Tuesday, and JV Invite in Lake Geneva on Thursday. The week is capped off with the Tider Invite next week Friday.

Whippet Girls Solid Basketball Season Comes to an End with Loss in Regional Playoffs

Photos by Bob Mischka

Shoreland Lutheran beat the Whippets in the second round of the WIAA Regional Playoffs on Friday, Feb 23. The final score was 59-52. Allison Heckert led the Whippet scoring with 19 followed by Miranda Reynolds with 14. This ends the WHS Girls Basketball 2017-18 season.

From Coach Judy Harms:

We turned the ball over way too many times tonight, several during key moments, and had a very poor shooting night.  Defensively we allowed Shoreland’s top player, Chelby Koker, to get her 31, including 10 for 10 from the line.   Lauren Heathcock also poured in 22.  Between the two of them we needed to do a better job at stopping their shots.   Tournament time teams need to step it up, and tonight we just didn’t do that.
