Softball Prevails in Wild Game Two of Doubleheader

The Lady Whippets traveled to Walworth on Saturday for a doubleheader against the Big Foot Chiefs.

Game 1 went to Big Foot as the Whippets could only produce 3 hits and 3 runs, losing by a score of 7 to 3. Cheyenne Bohmann had 2 of the 3 hits and also drove in 1 run. Bohmann pitched the first five innings giving up 4 runs and departing with Whitewater down 4 to 2. Ashlynne Bohmann pitched the last inning, giving up 3 runs. The Whippets plated 1 more run in the seventh inning, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit.

Game 2 provided a lot of excitement. Whitewater took a 7 to 3 lead after two innings, as Shyan Lesperance hit an inside the park homerun to drive in 3 runs. Big Foot scored 7 runs in the third to take a 10 to 7 lead. Whitewater scored 2 in the bottom of the third to make the score 10 to 9. The game went back and forth with Big Foot leading 15 to 12 after six innings. Whitewater held Big Foot in check in the top of the seventh but was still down by three. Shyan Lesperance led off with a single and Cheyenne Bohmann was hit by a pitch. Lauren Buehler came in to run for Bohmann. With one out, Lexi Juoni doubled to leftfield to score Lesperance. With two outs, Nataly Benes lofted a flyball to right field which was dropped, allowing Buehler and Juoni to score to tie the game at 15. In extra innings, Big Foot scored two runs in the top of the 8th to take a 17 to 15 lead. In the bottom of the 8th, Jenna Pope got things going with a single to right. Ashlynne Bohmann followed with a single to put runners on first and second. Makaylyn Benes came in to run for Bohmann. Three wild pitches by Big Foot’s pitcher allowed Pope and Benes to score, tying the game. Cheyenne Bohmann then got a base hit with one out. Lauren Buehler pinch ran and promptly stole second base. Cali Kopecky grounded out to short and Buehler scored all the way from second, catching Big Foot by surprise. The Whippets won a thriller 18 to 17. Cheyenne Bohmann was the winning pitcher in relief. Shyan Lesperance had the hot bat as she went 5 for 6 with 3 singles, a triple, and an inside the park homerun. She also scored 4 runs and drove in 3. Jenna Pope was 4 for 4 with three singles and a double. She also scored 2 runs and drove in 1.

The Whippets travel to Brodhead this Tuesday for a game against the Cardinals and then are home on Thursday against Evansville. Games start at 5:00 p.m.
