Our Readers Share: Steve Watson – A Colorless “Rainbow”

Steve Watson writes, “August 9 on my daily saunter, I noticed this rainbow with no color. I sent the photo to Mark Baden, channel 12 weather man.  He replied it’s a fogbow.  The droplets of water are too small to refract the light. He also pointed out that the halo around the shadow of my head is called heiligenschein.”

fogbowa nebulous arc or circle of white or yellowish light sometimes seen in fog [Merriam-webster.com]

heiligenscheina bright light around the shadow of a person’s head (as on a field or lawn) caused by diffraction and reflection of sunlight by dewdrops [Merriam-webster.com]

Our thanks to Steve Watson for sharing this fascinating photo.
