Track and Field Athletes Advance to Sectionals

Although it was cloudy in Big Foot, the sun was shining on the Whippet Track and Field Program as the team competed in its regional competition Monday, May 23. The top four finishers in each event earned a spot to compete in Thursday’s Sectional competition in Prairie du Chien.

On the girls’ side, a complete team effort allowed the team to earn enough points to finish runner-up in the regional. In the 100M Dash final, Maddie Buehler placed second in 12.86 seconds, and A’Lani Rogers finished 9th with a sub 14 effort of 13.99. In the 200 Prelims, Kindyl Kilar roared to the finish line with a time of 26.14, catapulting herself to the 3rd fastest ever in program history. In the finals, Kindyl took the crown in 26.48. Grace Villarreal and Calli Grosinske torched the track and both earned spots at Sectionals by placing 2nd and 4th in the 400. Carley Boudreau is really coming on strong when it matters most and posted a PR in the 100 Hurdles with a time of 21.01, good enough for 6th. In the 300 Low Hurdles, she ripped a 54.05 to claim 2nd overall and dropped 2.5 seconds from her previous best. The 4×100 and 4×200 relays feature the same four girls and consist of Olive Coburn, Maddie Buehler, Emma Weigel, and Kindyl Kilar. The 4×100 Relay took the crown and ran the 7th fastest time in program history with a 50.78. The 4×2 was just off the top 10 list in program history but still took the tape with a time of 1:47.56. The 4×400 Relay of Callie Grosinske, Gwen Truesdale, Nola Coburn, and Grace Villarreal brought the stick home in 3rd overall with a time of 4:35.56. 

The field events also produced many sectional advancers. Gwen Truesdale advanced in the High Jump by having fewer misses against her competitor and took the final spot to sectionals with a jump of 4′ 6″. Evie Troxel and Izzy Dieter advanced with 1st and 4th place finishes in the Pole Vault. Evie is on the cusp of a top ten position in program history by just brushing the bar off 9′ 6″, and advanced with a 9′ 0″ clearing. Izzy cleared 7′ 6″. Izzy got it done in the ring as well by placing 3rd in the Discus with a toss of 95′ 2″.

The boys finished in a very respectable 3rd place behind some stellar performances themselves. The 400 featured Ethan Dugan throwing down on the home stretch to run a lifetime best of 51.99 and Connor Sharlow in 3rd to take two Whippets in that event to Sectionals. Connor’s time was 53.44, which was also a personal best. In the 800, Nate Holden and Miles Nickelsburg ran PRs of 2:15.61 and 2:23.17 and were able to cap their seasons off on a high note. Cooper Hammond gutted out a strong effort in the 1600 to run his second-best time ever with a time of 5:00.04 but finished one spot short of advancing on to Sectionals. Colin Dugan ran his lifetime best in the 1600 with a time of 6:02, very close to his goal of breaking 6:00. The 3200 featured freshman Jack Hefty who ran a comfortable pace before letting his legs stretch out a bit. Jack finished under 10:00 for the first time and claimed the regional title in 9:58.92. The 300 Low Hurdles produced two lifetime bests for Caleb Clapper and Andrew McCullars. They finished 6th and 7th, respectively, with times of 49.21 and 49.34. The relays were thrilling as the Boys’ 4×100 of Traysen Thomason, Quincy Boudreau, Nate Black, and Noah Coleman took third in 46.63. The 4×200 was ever so tight but found themselves just short of 4th to take 5th in 1:40.89. That relay consisted of Traysen Thomason, Caleb Clapper, Adrian Rios, and Nate Black. On the anchor leg, Nate was mowing down the field but just ran out of track. The 4×400 finished off the track events for the evening in a heart pumping finish to take the crown. Connor Sharlow set the table giving Cooper the baton in the lead. Cooper then gave it to Quincy who blazed the home stretch to give it to Ethan in the lead. A strong athlete from Big Foot passed Ethan within the first 150m, and Ethan patiently waited until the time was right to strike; he did so in a convincing fashion to take the crown, and the best time of the year in the relay with a finish time of 3:36.18.

The field events were also very fruitful for Whippets as CJ Tomomitsu cleared 12′ in the Vault to take 2nd. The Discus again was the place to be if you are a Whippet fan as Connor Raupp and Jake Kuhlow advanced by placing 1st and 3rd. Connor’s throw was 129′ 7″ and Jake’s was 123′ 3″. The Shot-Put ring was on fire for Jake Kuhlow as he sent the 12-pound steel ball to a 3′ personal best and placed 3rd with a put of 42′ 4″. Connor was close to advancing in both events but ultimately placed 5th. 

Next up is the WIAA Sectional Track and Field meet in Prairie du Chien on Thursday, May 26. Field events start at 3:30, and track events begin at 4:15. GO, WHIPPETS!

Kiwanis Supports Whitewater Soccer Group; Tryouts for Select Teams begins in June

Editor’s Note: The following was provided by the Kiwanis Whitewater Breakfast Club and Whitewater United FC (formerly Whitewater Youth Soccer Club.)

For the sixth year, the Whitewater Kiwanis Breakfast Club has donated to Whitewater United FC (formerly Whitewater Youth Soccer Club).  On May 18, Tony Aranda, Head Coach of the U15 Select boys team and Vice President of Whitewater United FC, invited the Whitewater Kiwanis to attend a U15 Whitewater vs U15 Croatian Eagles (Milwaukee) soccer game at Whitewater High School. It was a tough, hard fought game resulting in a tie score of 1-1.  The Whitewater U8 team was invited on to the field at halftime to play as well.

Tony Aranda has been a leader in the Whitewater United FC club for 16 years.  Whitewater United FC has 12 teams of kids from ages 4 to 14 who host their home games at Moraine View Park.  For 28 years the league has been encouraging young soccer players to develop a love of soccer and teamwork.

The attached photo features the U15 Select Boys team, along with (left to right) Kiwanian Ed Schweitzer, Head Coach and Vice President of Whitewater United FC Tony Aranda, Kiwanian President Patrick Taylor and Kiwanian Jerry Grant.  Aranda accepted the $1,500 donation from Kiwanis on behalf of the Whitewater United.  The donation will be used for a new set of goals for U8 at Moraine View Park.

Registration for the next upcoming season, fall 2022- spring 2023, will open in June and registration can be done online on Whitewater United FC’s website at: www.whitewatersoccer.com. Registration is open to all Whitewater surrounding areas. 

Following is more information from the Whitewater United FC:

We will be holding tryouts for U12 and U13+ boys & girls select teams on June 6th, 14th, and 16th. On June 6th & 16th U12 tryouts are from 4:30-5:30pm and U13+ tryouts are from 6-7:30pm.  On June 14th U13+ tryouts are from 4:30-6pm and U12 tryouts are from 6:30-7:30pm.   There are three dates youth can tryout and must attend at least one for evaluation, but they may attend all three as well for additional evaluation.  The tryout fee is $25 and includes a t-shirt that youth must wear on tryout dates (this fee covers all tryout dates). We encourage everyone with a birth year of 2008-2013 who have an interest in playing select to tryout. You must register for tryouts and the link to register is: https://go.teamsnap.com/forms/ 315079.  Please register for tryouts by June 6th.  You can also find tryout information on our website at: www.whitewatersoccer.com. Registration for select teams will open after tryouts conclude, June 17th – July 15th for those who receive offer letters for a select team.  

The next soccer season will begin in September (our schedule follows the school year and one season is played in two sessions, fall & spring games) and registration will be open from June 1st – July 15th for Rec teams.  You can register starting June 1st and the link for registration will be sent out closer to that date.  It will also be open on our website at: whitewatersoccer.com.

UW-W Baseball Hosts NCAA Super Regional May 27-28

The No. 9 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team will host No. 12 UW-Stevens Point in the NCAA Super Regional this Friday-Saturday, May 27-28, at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium in Whitewater.

First pitch of the best-of-three series is set for Friday at 12 p.m. The second game is scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m. and the third game, if necessary, will take place 45 minutes following the conclusion of Game 2.

Tickets for the event will cost $10 per day for adults and $8 for seniors, students and youth above the age of 2 and can be purchased at the entry gate.

The winner of the Super Regional will advance to the NCAA Division III Championship, which is set for June 3-8 at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

The Warhawks (36-9 overall) won the NCAA Whitewater Regional over the weekend, defeating No. 20 Aurora 12-8 in the tournament final. UW-W earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament after winning the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season championship with a 25-3 record.

UW-Stevens Point (38-8) claimed the NCAA Stevens Point Regional title with a 21-8 victory against No. 18 North Central (Ill.) in the final. The Pointers claimed an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament as the 2022 WIAC Tournament champion.

UW-Whitewater and UW-Stevens Point met four times during the season. The Pointers took the opener by a 4-0 score on March 28 at Miller Stadium before the Warhawks took the next three meetings by scores of 2-0 on March 28 and 4-1 and 9-1 in back-to-back games on April 26 in Whitewater.

The two teams were ranked first and second in the final NCAA Region IX Ranking of the 2022 season.

The No. 9 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team claimed the NCAA Whitewater Regional championship with a 12-8 victory against No. 20 Aurora (Ill.) in the second of two games played Sunday at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium.

The Warhawks (36-9 overall), who claimed their first regional title since the format shifted to a four-team tournament, will take on No. 12 UW-Stevens Point Friday and Saturday, May 27-28, in a best-of-three series in the NCAA Super Regional Round.

After dropping the first game of the day by a 13-8 score, UW-Whitewater responded well in the night cap, posting 14 hits and getting clutch pitching performances on its way to a 12-8 triumph and the program’s first regional championship since 2016.

Centerfielder Zach Campbell and third baseman Matt Korman led the offense. Campbell finished 4-for-4 with three runs scored and three runs batted in, while Korman registered two hits, including a three-run homer, and tallied three runs scored and four RBIs.

Left fielder Matt Scolan and second baseman Sam Vomhof each totaled two hits and two runs scored. Shortstop Bennett Frazer collected two hits and two RBIs, and first baseman Nick Paget, right fielder Jacob DeMeyer and cather Ryan Norton each plated one run.

Cade Berendt tossed the first five innings to pick up the win, improving to 7-0 for the season. Sam Paden pitched three-plus innings to bridge the gap to Donovan Brandl, who got the final three outs in the bottom of the ninth inning.

The three UW-W pitchers combined to strand 10 Spartan runners in the contest.

The two teams traded runs in the first inning. Campbell’s two-out double to right center plated Vomhof to give the Warhawks the early lead. Aurora (36-11) responded in the bottom half of the frame with two runs to take the lead.

Korman homered with two outs in the third for his second long ball in as many days, giving UW-Whitewater a 4-2 advantage. The Spartans cut their deficit to 4-3 with a run in the bottom of the inning.

The Warhawks broke the game open in the fifth with four runs. Paget started the scoring with a run-scoring base hit up the middle and was followed by Korman, who smashed a single to right center that scored one run. DeMeyer added an RBI double and Frazer hit a sacrifice fly for an 8-3 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Spartans rallied for two runs before Scolan threw out a third run trying to score on a base hit to left, keeping the UW-W lead at 8-5.

Aurora threatened again in the sixth, but Paden pitched out of it, leaving the bases loaded with a fielder’s choice ground ball to short.

UW-Whitewater added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth. Frazer knocked a base hit to center to score one run before Norton hit a sacrifice fly to left in the seventh. In the eighth, Campbell came through with a two-out, two-run double to right center to make it 12-5.

The Spartans touched home plate three times in the bottom of the ninth before Brandl retired the final three batters of the contest.

In the first game of the day, Aurora plated seven runs in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth to take a commanding lead. UW-W scored six times in the ninth inning before the rally came up short.

Korman collected three hits, including two doubles, with one run scored and one RBI. Scolan knocked in three runs, while Vomhof tallied two hits and one run scored. Second baseman David Rubin finished 2-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI and Campbell and Paget each added one hit, one run scored and one RBI.

Pitcher Cam Anfang dropped to 4-1 on the season with the loss. Nick Rector and Trey Bretl each pitched in relief.

The winner of this week’s Super Regional series will earn a trip to the NCAA Division III World Series, which is set for June 3-8 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

UW-Whitewater and UW-Stevens Point played four times during the regular season. The Warhawks took three of the four meetings, all played at Miller Stadium in Whitewater.

The No. 9 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team used a timely offense and strong pitching Saturday to defeat No. 20 Aurora (Ill.) 8-4 on the second day of the NCAA Whitewater Regional at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium.

The Warhawks (35-8 overall) will play in Sunday’s regional championship game against the winner of tonight’s Aurora/Augustana game. First pitch of the contest is scheduled for 11 a.m.

UW-Whitewater smashed three homers and totaled 13 hits in Saturday’s game. Kade Lancour allowed two runs over seven innings to improve to 9-0 on the year. Cade Berendt tossed the final two frames in relief.

Left fielder Matt Scolan tallied three hits, including a solo home run, a triple and a bunt single, and knocked in a pair of runs. Third baseman Matt Korman tallied two hits, including a two-run homer, and designated hitter Sam Paden registered two hits, including a two-run homer and a run-scoring double.

Catcher Ryan Norton posted two hits, two runs scored and one RBI and second baseman David Rubin collected a pair of hits.

The Warhawks were first on the board thanks to Scolan’s solo homer with two outs in the bottom of the third, his sixth of the year and second of the regional tournament.

After the Spartans (34-10) took the lead in the top of the fourth, UW-Whitewater responded in the fifth on Paden’s go-ahead, two-run homer to make it 3-2.

The Warhawks turned the game in the sixth. Following a 1-2-3 top half by Lancour, Korman hit a two-run homer the opposite way to right field, his fourth of the season, to increase the advantage to three runs. Norton and Paden hit RBI doubles later in the frame to make it 7-2.

UW-W added an insurance run in the eighth on a bases-loaded walk by Scolan.

Aurora tallied twice with two outs in the top of the ninth, but Berendt induced a pop-up with the tying run in the on-deck circle.

A UW-W loss Sunday would force a decisive seventh game of the regional to start approximately 45 minutes following the completion of Sunday’s first game.

The No. 9 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team surged to a 10-run lead and hung on late Friday for a 10-6 triumph against the Milwaukee School of Engineering in the first game of the NCAA Whitewater Regional at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium.

The Warhawks (34-8 overall) advance to face the winner of the Augustana/Aurora game on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

UW-Whitewater tallied six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to break open a close game. After the Warhawks added two more in the sixth, the Raiders (27-17) responded with six in the top of the seventh, tallying three before a rain delay and three more after play resumed to cut into their deficit.

Cam Anfang and Cade Berendt combined to keep MSOE off the board in the eighth and ninth innings, allowing UW-W to preserve the victory.

Westin Muir struck out nine batters over six-plus innings to improve to 10-2 on the season. Making his first appearance of the year, Donovan Brandl recorded the first two outs of the seventh before Anfang took over following a brief second rain delay.

Left fielder Matt Scolan led the Warhawks at the plate with two hits, including a solo homer to lead off the bottom of the first, two runs scored and three runs batted in. First baseman Nick Paget collected two hits, two runs scored and one RBI, while second baseman David Rubin finished 2-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI.

Third baseman Matt Korman posted two hits, one walk and one run scored and catcher Ryan Norton chipped in with one hit, one run scored and one RBI. Shortstop Bennett Frazer also plated a run for UW-W.

UW-Whitewater struck twice in the first on Scolan’s solo homer and an error by the Raiders.

In the fourth, Norton plated a run on a single to right, and Korman scored from third on a passed ball. Rubin’s double to left center made it 5-0 before a two-run double by Scolan and a wild pitch to increase the lead to 8-0.

Paget delivered an RBI single in the sixth and came around to score on Frazer’s bases-loaded walk to increase the margin to 10.

MSOE drew four walks during its six-run seventh inning. Anfang finished the inning on a strikeout.

Berendt pitched around a hit and an error in the ninth, leaving the tying run in the on-deck circle with a fielder’s choice and a strikeout.

UW-Whitewater last played Aurora in 2012, posting a 6-5 win in 10 innings at the NCAA Tournament. The team last played Augustana in 2016, tallying a 15-3 victory in the NCAA Tournament.

Whitewater United FC Soccer Teams Compete in Tournament in Janesville

Over Mother’s Day weekend teams from Whitewater’s local soccer club – Whitewater United FC – attended a soccer tournament in Janesville. It was a great weekend for soccer and Whitewater United FC took full advantage of the beautiful weather. Five of the teams attended the tournament. U10 Co-Ed, U12 Co-Ed, U12 Select Boys, U15 Select Boys, and U15 Select Girls. The U10 co-ed finished in fourth place overall in their age group. The U12 co-ed team finished fifth place in their respective age group. The U12 Select boys finished second place among a tough bracket of teams. The U15 Select boys finished in a respectable third place among some of the best clubs in the southern part of the state. U15 Select girls finished in second place after a weekend of tough games. Overall, there was outstanding effort from our players and support from our coaches and families. Thank you from Whitewater United FC Board!

Pair of Runners Crack WHS Top Ten

Juniors Maddie Buehler and Kindyl Kilar raced their way into Whippet Track and Field program history this past weekend at the RVC Meet hosted at Turner High School.

Maddie ran a sensational 100m dash final to place second behind last year’s state runner up in that event. Her time of 12.71 catapulted her to the 6th fastest time ever run by a Lady Whippet!

Kindyl has shown great promise in the 400 through relay splits and was entered in the 400 open for the first time in an attempt to potentially upset the favorite from East Troy. After running prelims and a final in the 100 (where she placed fourth in 12.86), she came back to compete against the fresh East Troy runner. In a thrilling race, Kindyl took her to the wire and was ultimately beat by .02 seconds. In her first ever open 400, Kindyl raced her way to the fifth fastest 400 time in program history with a time of 1:00.72.

Whippets Advance in Soccer Tourney

Monday night, May 16, Whitewater hosted the Jefferson Eagles in the first round of the RVC Girls’ Soccer Tournament. The teams played an exciting game that Whitewater won 3-0.

Goals for the Whippets were scored by Adriana Dixon (21′, 69′) and Mayte Navejas (80′).

Goalkeeper Marina Linos made four saves for Whitewater. Jefferson keeper Rachel Simonson made 11 saves, defending Whitewater’s 18 shots on goal.

The Whippets will travel to Big Foot on Thursday for the second round of the tournament.

UW-W Baseball To Host NCAA Regional Starting Friday

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater baseball team will make its 14th straight appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament and host the four-team Whitewater, Wisconsin Regional starting this Friday at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium.

The top-seeded Warhawks (33-8 overall) will face No. 4 seed MSOE in their opening game Friday at 11 a.m., while No. 2 seed Aurora (Ill.) will play against No. 3 Augustana (Ill.) at 2:30 p.m.

The winner of this weekend’s double-elimination regional advances to the NCAA Super Regional round.

UW-Whitewater earned a Pool C (at-large) bid for its 24th appearance in the national tournament after capturing the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season championship for the fifth straight season and 21st time in program history.
