The two teams traded points in the second before UW-Whitewater gained separation midway through the set. Leading 17-13, the Warhawks ran off the final eight points of the set on Mackenthun’s serve to level the match at 1-1.

Ithaca held a 7-4 advantage in the third set before a 12-3 run gave UW-Whitewater a 16-10 lead. UW-W continued to gain separation, eventually leading by a 21-11 margin. Weinfurt put the set away with a kill on the final point.

The Warhawks jumped out to a 6-2 advantage in the fourth and didn’t look back. Mackenthun served UW-W to a 10-point lead, which grew to as many as 13.

Friday’s contest is a rematch of the first round of the 2019 NCAA Tournament, when Otterbein topped UW-Whitewater in four sets at the Chicago Regional. The Cardinals lead the all-time series between the two teams by a 2-1 margin.

UW-W Women’s Basketball 2021-22 Roster Includes Two Local Students

Editor’s note: The following information was provided by UW-Whitewater.

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women’s basketball team starts the 2021-22 season with high hopes as it is set to supplement a strong core of veterans with a talented group of younger players.

The Warhawks, who finished 8-3 and reached the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship game during a shortened 2020-21 season, are predicted to finish second in the WIAC by the league’s coaches and athletic communications personnel and are ranked 18th in the D3hoops.com Preseason Top 25.

UW-Whitewater kicks off the new season Tuesday at home against Calvin (Mich.) at 6 p.m. The team then embarks on an eight-game stretch of playing away from Kachel Gymnasium.

The Warhawks start with a two-game set at UW-Stevens Point Nov. 12-13, taking on Concordia Wisconsin and Benedictine (Ill.) out of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference.

UW-Whitewater then hits the road for six consecutive true road games, visiting College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin opponents Augustana (Nov. 17), Illinois Wesleyan (Nov. 20) and Carroll (Nov. 23) before a trip to Dubuque, Iowa, to take on Loras on Nov. 27. Both Illinois Wesleyan and Loras, like UW-W, reached the NCAA Tournament in 2020.

The Warhawks then kick off WIAC play Dec. 1 at UW-Stevens Point before heading to UW-Stout for a game on Dec. 4.

UW-Whitewater resumes non-conference action Dec. 19-20 with games against Alfred (N.Y.) and Centre (Ky.) in Daytona Beach, Fla.

The team closes the calendar year Dec. 29-30 with home games against Lake Forest (Ill.) and Edgewood as part of the program’s four-team holiday tournament. UW-Platteville will play the same opponents on the opposite days. Edgewood was also a 2020 NCAA Tournament participant.

The Warhawks’ 12 remaining conference games will be played between Jan. 5-Feb. 16 and include seven home dates. Highlights include Parents Day against UW-Eau Claire on Jan. 8, Alumni Day on Jan. 15 against UW-River Falls and Play4Kay on Feb. 12 against UW-Stout. The regular season closes Feb. 16 at UW-Oshkosh.

The WIAC Tournament will be played the week of Feb. 21, and the NCAA Tournament begins with regionals on March 4-5. Following sectionals (March 11-12), the NCAA Championship is slated for March 18-19 in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Head coach Keri Carollo, who enters her 20th season at the helm of the program, returns 13 players from last year’s roster and welcomes eight newcomers to the program.

Guard Rebekah Schumacher (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater) and center Johanna Taylor (Wauwatosa, Wis./East) enter their fifth season with the team.

Taylor garnered first team D3hoops.com All-Central Region, first team all-conference and WIAC All-Defensive Team accolades in 2020-21 after averaging 10.5 points and 7.1 rebounds per game with 41 blocks, which ranked fourth in the nation. She was recently selected as a fourth-team Preseason All-American by D3hoops.com.

Schumacher averaged 7.4 points and 3.1 rebounds per contest a year ago and has played in 76 games in her career. A two-year starter, Schumacher finished among the top 10 in the league in steals (15) and assists (24) in 2020-21.

Fourth-year returners include guards Veronica Kieres (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) and Yssa Sto. Domingo (Streamwood, Ill./St. Edward), and forward Courtney Oomens (Lake Geneva, Wis./Badger).

Kieres averaged 4.8 points and 3.9 rebounds per game and totaled 16 steals, good for a tie for fifth in the WIAC, last season. Sto. Domingo also ranked among the league’s top five with 16 steals while averaging 3.7 points and 2.6 rebounds per affair.

Oomens, a key member of the frontcourt rotation for the last two years, played in nine games last season. In the team’s last full season in 2019-20, she averaged 5.5 points and 3.6 rebounds per game.

Lunden Alexander (Dolton, Ill./Thornwood), Abi Baumgartner (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central), Abby Belschner (Grafton, Wis./Cedarburg), Aleah Grundahl (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) and Kailey Ketz (Clayton, Wis./Clayton) comprise the team’s third-year returners.

Grundahl earned first team All-WIAC honors last season after tallying a team-high 14.3 points per game on 45.4 percent shooting. The forward also grabbed 6.6 rebounds per contest and finished among the top 10 in the conference in steals (15), assists (24) and free-throw percentage (73.1). Grundahl was the WIAC Newcomer of the Year as a freshman in 2019-20.

Belschner, also a two-year frontcourt mainstay, averaged 3.1 points and 2.5 rebounds per game and ranked 10th in the league in 2020-21 with seven blocked shots. Baumgartner, also a forward, appeared in four games a season ago.

Alexander and Ketz, both guards, combined to appear in eight games last season.

Guard Maggie Trautsch (Sun Prairie, Wis./DeForest) and forwards Erin Adams (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) and Kendall Roquet (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) enter their second year as Warhawks.

Trautsch posted 5.6 points and 2.7 rebounds per outing and started three games in the backcourt in 2020-21. Adams played in nine games.

Newcomers to the program include guards Kacie Carollo (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater), Eden Frick (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South), Abby Guthrie (Dixon, Ill./Dixon), Rebecca Schauer (Fredonia, Wis./Ozaukee), Olivia Tinder (Beloit, Wis./Turner) and Hailey Voelker (Colby, Wis./Colby), and forwards Mallory Oloffson (Normal, Ill./Normal Community) and Olivia Zuege (Green Bay, Wis./Preble).

The following UW-Whitewater student-atheltes from your coverage area are members of the 2021-22 Warhawk women’s basketball team:

Kacie Carollo of Whitewater (Whitewater High School), a freshman majoring in integrated science and business.

The Whippets started out the meet with a fast 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:59.85. Unfortunately, it was a little too fast for our officials, which resulted in a disqualification.

In the 200 Freestyle, Karime Velazquez and Josie Treder battled it out. Josie dropped 9 seconds, while Karime dropped 17 seconds!

In the 200 IM, Emerson Dunham had a best time of 2:34.90 while also placing first in her heat and 11th overall.

The 100 Freestyle crew including Skylar Staebler, Ashly Xochipa, and Grace Foucault collectively went season best times. Grace went a 56.88, and placed 5th overall!

In the 500 Freestyle, Brooke Bazeley had a time of 5:52.24 with a 22 second drop and placed 12th overall. She finally broke that 6-minute barrier that she’s been working towards all season! Way to go, Brooke!

In the 200 Freestyle Relay (Ashly Xochipa, Karime Velazquez, Michelle Abarca, Josie Treder), the swimmers dropped 21 seconds overall. Ashly lead with an impressive 29.79 which lands her on the Under :30 Team!

In the 100 Backstroke, Ashly Xochipa had a time of 1:19.79 and placed 16th overall. Grace Foucault broke her own school record with a time of 1:00.94 and placed 4th overall!!

In the 100 Breaststroke, Josie Treder reached her goal of going under 1:30; she went a time of 1:28.16. Emerson Dunham placed 15th overall with a time of 1:22.26.

In the 400 Freestyle Relay (Makayla Bazeley, Brooke Bazeley, Emerson Dunham, and Grace Foucault), dropped 6 seconds with a time of 4:00.99. The relay placed 7th overall!

We are very proud of how hard all of our athletes worked this year and can’t wait to see what another year of experience will do for them. Good luck to Grace Foucault at the WIAA State Swim Meet this Friday!

No. 3 UW-Whitewater Football Clinches WIAC Title in Thriller

Final Statistics: https://s3.amazonaws.com/sidearm.sites/uwwsports.com/documents/2021/11/6/25343.pdf

The No. 3 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater football team batted down a pass in the end zone on the final play of the game Saturday to preserve a 13-7 victory against No. 12 UW-La Crosse in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest in front of 11,991 fans at Perkins Stadium.

With the win, the Warhawks (9-0 overall, 6-0 WIAC) clinch a share of the program’s 38th conference championship and earn the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Playoffs, which begin Nov. 20.

With three seconds to play, the Eagles (7-2, 5-1) threw a final pass from the UW-W 18-yard line that was deflected by Egon Hein and fell to the turf with no time remaining.

In an evenly-played, turnover-free game, UW-Whitewater held a 353-321 edge in total yards and held UW-La Crosse to 79 yards rushing on 25 attempts (3.2 yards per carry).

Alex Peete rushed 27 times for 151 yards, while Max Meylor completed 13-of-23 passes for 166 yards. Tyler Holte tallied five receptions for 99 yards.

Hein led the defense with 11 tackles, including one for a loss, and Justin Allen posted seven stops, including one for a loss.

Matt Maldonado kicked a pair of field goals in the first half, including a career-long 49-yarder in the final minute of the second quarter, to account for the only points of the first 30 minutes.

Late in the first quarter, the Eagles had a first-and-goal from the UW-W 1-yard line and were stopped on three consecutive plays, including a pair of running plays stopped for no gain. On fourth-and-goal, UW-La Crosse committed a false start, and pulled the offense off the field for a field goal attempt, which hit the upright to keep the score at 0-0.

Maldonado’s first field goal, a 27-yarder with 6:44 left in the second quarter, capped a nine-play, 65-yard drive that included a 25-yard run by Peete and a 22-yard run by Jaylon Edmonson.

Following an Eagle punt, the Warhawks drove 49 yards on nine plays, including a 20-yard completion to Ryan Wisniewski, to set up Maldonado’s 49-yard field goal with 26 seconds remaining.

The two teams traded punts in a scoreless third quarter, and UW-Whitewater was unable to cash in on a drive to the UW-L 17-yard line early in the fourth.

On the first play from scrimmage after a UW-La Crosse punt, Meylor hit Holte deep down the middle for a 75-yard pass. Two plays later, Meylor ran over left tackle for a 1-yard touchdown to give the Warhawks a 13-0 advantage with 11:21 on the clock.

The Eagles drove 74 yards on 15 plays on the next drive to make it a six-point game with 6:17 to play.

UW-Whitewater took nearly four minutes off the clock on its next drive, and Maldonado’s punt pinned UW-La Crosse back at its own 5-yard line. The Eagles drove all the way down to the Warhawks’ 18-yard line before the final incompletion.

The Warhawks close the regular season next Saturday, Nov. 13, at UW-Stevens Point. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.

Hefty Runs at State Cross Country

What a journey! Jack Hefty has certainly made a name for himself wearing a Whippet jersey this season. Today, he was the first Whippet freshman to run in the state meet as an individual since Brett Harms who did the same feat in 2010. Surrounded by seventeen of his teammates that rode up on the bus to cheer him on, he gained tremendous experience as he crossed the line in his race. Jack was able to battle his way to a 117th place finish out of 151 finishers, with a time of 18:50.4. Although not the finish he was looking for, he was able to collect some medals, earn second team all-conference honors, and grab an individual state meet birth this season. Even though a race I’m sure he’d like to re-run, competing at state is always better than not competing at state at all. A wealth of experience and knowledge was gained in just his first 11 weeks as a high schooler.

Adding to the rich tradition of academic excellence as a Whippet runner, Jack will finish his first semester well above the 3.5 GPA standard set to earn Academic All-State status. Once the paperwork is filed and processed, he will receive this award in January.

Please congratulate Jack on a fine freshman season!

The No. 3 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater football team swung the momentum early Saturday with a big defensive play and piled up 517 yards of total offense in a 48-6 victory against UW-Eau Claire in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest in front of 11,248 fans at Perkins Stadium.

The Warhawks (8-0 overall, 5-0 WIAC) rushed for 204 yards and added 313 yards through the air, while the defense forced four turnovers and held the Blugolds to 319 total yards, including 75 on the ground.

Alex Peete posted 116 yards and one touchdown on 17 carries. Max Meylor threw for 303 yards and four touchdowns, and Ryan Wisniewski tallied eight receptions for 120 yards and three scores.

Mark McGrath paced the defense with nine tackles, while Kyle Koelblinger contributed six stops, one forced fumble and one pass breakup.

UW-Eau Claire (3-5, 1-4) drove deep into UW-W territory on the first drive of the game, but Koelblinger stripped the ball carrier at the 25-yard line, and Thomas Wojnowski picked it up and ran 75 yards for a touchdown with 13:47 on the clock.

Meylor pinned the Blugolds at their own 1-yard line with a 44-yard punt midway through the quarter, and after UW-Eau Claire was forced to punt, Meylor hit Wisniewski on a shovel pass from 7 yards out to make it 14-0 with 2:51 remaining in the first quarter.

Tegan Christiansen posted an interception on the next drive on a long pass attempt by the Blugolds, and UW-Whitewater turned it around for a nine-play, 95-yard drive, capped by a 15-yard pass from Meylor to Tyler Holte that made it 21-0 with 10:46 to play in the second quarter.

The defense forced a three-and-out on the ensuing drive, and the Warhawks pushed their lead to 28 thanks to a 14-yard pass from Meylor to Wisniewski with 4:44 remaining.

UW-Eau Claire drove to the UW-W 12-yard line late in the half, but Wojnowski picked off Harry Roubidoux at the goal line to keep the UW-Whitewater lead at 28-0 into halftime.

Holte started the second half with a 72-yard kickoff return to the Blugolds’ 23-yard line, and Matt Maldonado kicked a 24-yard field goal to increase the lead to 31-0 with 12:06 to go in the third quarter.

After UW-Eau Claire got on the board with a touchdown, Meylor hit Wisniewski deep down the middle of the field for a 64-yard score and a 38-6 advantage at the 9:01 mark.

The Warhawks added to their lead later in the quarter as Peete bounced a run to the outside for a 24-yard touchdown with 51 seconds left in the period.

Maldonado capped the scoring with a career-long 45-yard field goal with 4:51 on the clock.

On the next drive, Nehemiah Lomax recovered a UW-Eau Claire fumble, and the Warhawks ran out the clock on the final possession.

UW-Whitewater hosts nationally-ranked UW-La Crosse for a showdown of the league’s unbeatens next Saturday, Nov. 6, at 1 p.m. at Perkins Stadium.
